Cornellian, I love Michigan as much as anyone. But Michigan will never catch up to Wharton as far as Business goes. Wharton can get a $100 million donation from an alum at will. They are one of the top 2 or top 3 Business schools in the World. Michigan Business is excellent (top 10 in the US) and this donation could lift it higher over the long term, but it will not make Michigan #1 in Business.

Still, it is great to see alums give back to the school.

"Wharton can get a $100 million donation from an alum at will."

Stephen Ross' $100 million donation is more than 50% larger than any other donation to any business school in the US.

If Wharton could get $100 million donation, they would. The next largest gift was $62 million to the Darden School at UVA.

But back to the point, this donation should certainly help Michigan attract new faculty, but it won't make them number one. Michigan is trying to raise a total of $350 million - so they still have a way to go.

I'm sorry, I meant for undergraduate business schools.

I was doing some digging around. I believe this is one of the 10 biggest gifts to any university ever! I hope more Michigan alums step up to the plate. Michigan's endowment has grown faster than any top university since 1990. Our endowment has grown by close to 700% in the last 14 years. Most top 15 universities experienced a 250%-400% growth in endowment. Only Duke comes close.

We got into the "endowment race" very late. Most private universities have been playing the game for decades. Michigan has only been taking it seriously for the last decade or so. At this pace, we should be in great shape financially for some time. Michigan will soon be able to give out merit schollarships and increase the faculty size to provide LAC-type class sizes. Of course, we are probably a decade away from that, but it is still great to see.

Endowments of top universites in 1990 and 2004:

#1 Harvard: $5 Billion => $20 Billion (400% increase)

#2 Yale: $3 Billion => $10 Billion (330% increase)

#3 Princeton: $3 Billion => $9 Billion (300% increase)

#4 Stanford: $2.5 Billion => $8 Billion (320% increase)

#5 MIT: $1.5 Billion => $6 Billion (400% increase)

#6 Emory: $1.5 Billion => $5 Billion (330% increase)

#7 Columbia: $1.5 Billion => $4.5 Billion (300% increase)

#8 Chicago: $1 Billion => $4 Billion (400% increase)

#8 Michigan:$600 Million => $4 Billion (670% increase)

#8 Penn: $1 Billion => $4 Billion (400% increase)

#8 WUSL: $1.5 Billion => $4 Billion (270% increase)

#12 Northwestern: $1 Billion => $3.5 Billion (350% increase)

#13 Cornell University: $1 Billion => $3 Billion (300% increase)

#13 Duke University $550 Million => $3 Billion (600% increase)

#13 Rice University $1.25 Billion => $3 Billion (240% increase)

#13 Texas-Austin: $1 Billion => $3 Billion (300% increase)

#17 Notre Dame: $750 million => $2.75 Billion (370% increase)

#18 Dartmouth: $700 million => $2.5 Billion (350% increase)

#19 Brown: $500 Million => $2 Billion (400% increase)

#19 Cal-Berkeley: $400 million => $2 Billion (500% increase)

#19 Caltech: $500 Million => $2 Billion (400% increase)

#19 Johns Hopkins: $600 Million => $2 Billion (300% increase)

#19 Virginia: $500 million => $2 Billion (400% increase)
