One of the essays asks you to talk about a issue of local, national, or international concern. Do you think it would really hurt my chances if i write about Affirmative Action considering its Umich im applying to and im a minority?

Stay away from controversial subjects of any kind, no matter what anyone says!

If this is an issue you have strong feelings about, I think it would be fine, except if you're violently opposed to it, in which case, I'd be careful. Support for AA is the mainstream point of view at Michigan.

Hokie, if you are for it, and you have experiences that demonstrate the benefits and diversity and AA, go for it. Just make sure it is genuine and meaningful and it will be well received.

Last year I wrote about the importance of America not pursuing unwanted unilateral action. I'm liberal, and I sent it to left-leaning UMich and right-leaning Vanderbilt, and got in both. Its the quality of your work that matters.
