Well, I have to say...maybe. You have a chance, but not much of one, I would find a good back up plan. Make sure your second choice is somewhere you could tolerate. I personally think your stats are better suited to Michigan State than U of M.

I have seen kids with higher stats turned down and they also went to private school in Michigan.

well, considering you're in-state, and from a good private school, i think that significantly boosts your chances.
but
your g.p.a. is only 3.5 unweighted, and probably even lower if they recalculate it (because umich recalculates gpa's from academic 10th and 11th grade classes)... and umich is known for accepting kids with high (3.8+... i'm guessing) g.p.a.'s... BUT. since your school's a very well known.. probably competitive, high school... that would be put into consideration.

i'm not an expert, actually i've only gained knowledge from lurking around random college forums, but i think you're a maybe also. (i'm also a maybe.. out of state)

good luck!

*edit* oh- i just read that you already sent your app in... i think you're in.

he's in, if he was out of state, no way, but in state is very easy

By Skulkarni1 (Skulkarni1) on Monday, September 06, 2004 - 11:36 am: Edit

the 3.5 gpa is calculated the UMICH way, with only 10th and 11th calculated academic courses only

I don't mean to be rude...but give these kids a chance. I'm at UMich riht now. I just started. I had just over a 1200 on my SAT's and SAT II's weren't that great. I did have a 4.0 highschool gpa and lots of extra cirriculars. I went to a normal, very small, highschool. My school offered very few AP classes. I could only take 4 or 5 total. I'm also from out of state.
I feel that I wrote some good essays for Michigan but I'm not some genius and I'm still here. Everyone that keeps posting just needs to relax, write some diverse essays that show off your unique personalities, and just be confident. Everyone that has posted on here recently asking what their chances are, I would say you'll all get in.
Good luck all and hope to you see you next fall!

Skulkarni, I think you've got a very good chance. My S went to the other h.s. in Michigan that got the highest points under the old system - and he was accepted to Honors with only a slightly higher GPA. Under the old system, your GPA would have been bumped up the equivalent of a tenth over the best public schools in the state (and there are only a handful of them) and two tenths over the above average high schools. So Michigan looks at your GPA as about equal to a 3.7. Since you applied so early, I think you're in -- unless you applied to engineering, which is a whole different story.

thanks everyone! i applied LSA, so i'm just keeping my fingers crossed and praying a lot!
