Gold = 3
Silver = 7
Bronze = 4
Rank by Gold = 20th (not bad for a "country" with the "birth rate" of 1700 a year).

:)

Stanford is amazing. That means that Stanford students/alums were involved in about 13.6% of the medals that were won by the US.

Berkeley got 15 medals (though not all for the U.S.)

Hmmph. UCLA got 19: 8, 3, 8.

Stanford has an amazing athletics program but part of it is that they field a team in just about everything. If tiddlywinks were to become an Olympic sport tomorrow, Stanford would start sifting its apps to find someone who could play left tiddly.

Phelps is going to Michigan but does not compete because he is a pro. Does he still count? If that's the case, Michigan got 6 G, 4 S and 2 B. Without Phelps, Michigan has 4 S and 2 B. Amazing the difference a mere athlete can make!

Didn't Phelps won 6 gold and 2 bronze?

By Stanfordnualum (Stanfordnualum) on Monday, August 30, 2004 - 10:40 am: Edit

Alexandre,

Without Phelps, US would have been behind China in gold medals...now you can see the difference he did make.

Stanfordalum...thats not exactly true. The US beat out the Russians (not the Chinese) by 11. So without Phelps they would have won by 3.

also, there were a couple events that would still have been American gold even without Phelps (meaning, an American also got second and therefore would've been the gold medalist). The Chinese still would have had no chance of beating us.
