i'm searching for colleges right now, and many i would really like to go to, but i keep on wondering if i could get in. so here are my stats. (the ones that i know)

I'm a black female from long island

GPA UW is 4.0...(did math wrong the last time)
i dont know what it is weighted, but i've been in honors classes since 7th grade and in my junior year all my major classes were AP, and i will do the same for my senior year, including self studying for some other AP test.

So far: AP lang=5, ap us history=5,...ap physics=3 ;(

next years classes: ap lit, ap bio, ap gov, self study ap chem and ap world history...and some other fluff. (my take is that i'll get a 5 in gov, lit, and world history, a 4 or 5 in bio, and chemisty i have no clue (1-5) )

my numerical weighted GPA is 93.46 which i know isn't all that good.

As for regional tests like the Regents, my average score is a 95, but i've scored as high as a 99 and my lowest score is a 90.

sat first shot 1290...more than capable of bringing that up to high 1300's to low 1400's as seen in practice

i plan on doing my sat II's in november

EC's:
Volunteering at Winthrop hospital (neonatal intensive care unit, and maternity)...will continue in october.
Volunteering in FBLA club

Model united nations since 7th grade (treasurer/ fundraising coordinator)
won: best delegate UNICEF 2003 Yale Model UN conference
won: honorable mention Disarmament Chicago University
won: honorable mention Disarament Sewanahaka interdistrict MUN

Foreign Language Honor Society
Business Honor Society
Senior Honor Society
French club since 7th grade
FBLA since 8th grade

Member of Global Links...a small select club that allows you to explore the business world while linking up with business people or visiting hospitals and doctors or attending conventions. Raised about 700 for a cancer fund.

I play the cello and the piano, however i'm no beethoven, but i do like the instruments.

I've worked at University Sports Publication and Subways

My rank i wont know for about 2-3 weeks, but i'm guessing top 10%..i hope.

Thats all i know right now.

I LOVE science and biology and i would like to study a pre-med track.

please tell me if you think if i could get in or not,..some advice on what i should work on,..or some other more suitable colleges that i should concentrate on. thanks...oh yes..this message is cross posted.

"GPA UW is 4.0...(did math wrong the last time)"
"my numerical weighted GPA is 93.46 which i know isn't all that good."

how is that possible?

please help me then. i asked someone on the john hopkins board how to calculate my gpa and they said for every class that i get a 90 or above add a 4 for every class that i got an 80 or above add a 3 and then for 70 and a 2 and whatnot. then after that divide that number by how many classes that i have taken. i did that and i came up with a 4.0. my school also said that any complete average above a 90 is a 4.0. My unweighted numerical average is above a 90 and so is my unweighted.

please please explain to my how your school does gpa's and such.

an unweighted GPA of 90 from where I am would be a GPA of 3.5 at best...

If your UW GPA is 4.0, that means you have had straight A's all through high school.

By Phyliciasteph (Phyliciasteph) on Sunday, August 29, 2004 - 09:59 pm: Edit

well i practically have. i've only gotten one 85 and one 75. and other than that i have gotten 90's 95's, and 98's. i'm looking at my transcript and it says that the "lowest numerical equivalent" of an A is a 90. so yah.

how did your school come up with your gpa?

if you got one B and a C, you dont have a 4.0

By 80drofnats (80drofnats) on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 - 08:52 am: Edit

well most colleges just look at your class grades they don't recalculate things on a 4.0 scale, so as long as your class grades look good thats fine, i'd say you have like a 3.85 or so...your sat needs to come up 100 pts or so for stanford, but everything else looks pretty good.

thanks fot the tip drofnats. i will be taking them in november so that i'll have enough time to work on it.

BTW Kousuke,..i went to see my counselor and the c came from gym which isn't an averaged class, and also we figure out gpa by your overall average not by individual classes, and since i have more than an A average its still a 4.0.

any tips on more appropriate schools would be appreciated. If you dont believe that stanford is my calling i would love to hear of schools that i could get into. i'm not one of those people who get insulted and post on here just to be praised because of their stellar grades. i actually use this board for what it should be used for. advice and constructive criticism.

Eventhough your SATs are low for the following schools, for sciences and pre-med think about Emory, Tufts, Cornell, Bowdoin, Wesleyan, Brown, Colgate, Washington U (WUSTL), Case Western (possible scholarship opportunities), Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Georgetown, Rice and Chicago, for starters.
