Stanford isn't clear about word count. Today I got off my lazy ass (or got on, rather) and wrote a roommate essay that is 340 words. Too much?

1400 *characters*...that's closer to 250 words for me, so I'd definitely check your length in characters before increasing it to 400 words.

Wha? 1400 characters is nothing.

Does that include spaces? Without them, my sub-standard essay is 1401. I could shave it down to 1400, but it'll be tough work!

Quick piece of advice: more is not necessarily better. My essays were done on a typewriter and only took maybe 2/3 of the alotted space. Cramming in as much as you can isn't a substitute for quality.

For the short essays, short enough to fit in the space with size 10 or 11 font. For the long essay, the same thing.
Remember... length does not necessarily equal quality. Just focus, and say what you want to say. Don't ramble.
