How do your schools do the AP weight?
I took 12 AP courses and I didn't get half as much weight as some of you (mine was .0125 extra to your GPA per AP per quarter)

From the time UMich first visted my high school, I showed interest and kept in contact with the person they sent from the admissions office. The personal connections made were deffinately key in my acceptance, along with coming from a high profile college prepartory school, not to mention a good dose of luck obviously.
By Stuckat410 (Stuckat410) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 05:59 pm: Edit
How did you keep in touch...
Did you basically ask questions about admissions?
Sorry so many qeustions
By Michpimp (Michpimp) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 06:08 pm: Edit
I just kept it casual and friendly, deffinately not overbearing or trying to suck up, deffinately visit at least once and try to talk to always talk to the same person. Feel free to ask any questions, I love the school, and love to encourage others to attend.
By Barrons (Barrons) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 07:38 pm: Edit
Deffinately!! Must be a REALLY good prep school. I have seen many creative spellings, but that's a topper.

HEY thanks a lot MichPimp for offering help... I actually had a lot of questions about UMich such as the following:
1. How's the work load? I'm going to be an undecided major (IF I get accepted.. which I desperately hope I do). I've heard it's pretty intense, and that a lot of pre-med courses are very hard to get A's... (well aren't all college courses hard to get A's in?)... that some professors outright lie about what will be on the exam, the lectures are extremely easy, but the exams end up being ten times harder... what's your opinion?
2. Is Double Majoring a lot of work from what you know?
3. How's the social life at UMich?
4. What are some pro's and con's about UMich?
Also.. could you please check out my stats and see if I have a chance at admissions? I had a separate post for this but i'll post it here again...

8. Missionary trip for 7 days where we repaired homes (repainted, re-did roofs), and lead a Vacation Bible Study for neighborhood kids, I participated and helped plan for this several months in advance (9)- 1hr//5 weeks for planning, and slept at the actual missions site for one week
9. Leader/Counselor for a camp-like program offered in my neighborhood (11)- it was only for three days, but I slept at the camp and was a counselor to a group of kids
10. Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble where I was 1st Trumpet for Concert and Symphonic Band, 2nd Trumpet in Wind Ensemble during Junior Year, and 1st Trumpet in Wind Ensemble during Senior Year (9~12)- 1 hr//36 weeks

12. Theater Business and Costumes Crew (10)- 3 hrs//12 weeks
My SAT scores
1st: 1190- 570V,620M
2nd: 1380- 630V,750M
ACT: 28
rough estimate of what my GPA right now is something like
3.9something weighted
3.8 or 3.7something unweighted
recalculated GPA is probably 3.75
My classes have nearly all been Honors classes since freshman year, except for 9th grade English, 11th grade Biology, and I didn't take a science class in sophomore year. I've only had two AP classes, and will be taking only one AP class-AP Spanish- next year.
I know this was a lot of reading... if you could, or anyone else could, help me out that'll be awesome. Michigan's one of my top choices along with Northwestern... so I'm trying to gather as much information as possible, and trying to figure out whether or not I should apply to NU-ED...
Thanks a lot Michpimp, and everyone else who's contributed to this post thus far!

I think the stats are more important than the extra curriculars personally. If you want to get into a really top tier school I might drop a couple commitments since you have 11 (if you really have that many...people lie/exaggerate). All I really had for extra curriculars were varsity soccer, a 25hr/week job, and NHS for 1 year.
But having a job that takes up 25hrs a week is a pretty serious extra curricular commitment. If you add up the hours it might be more than all 11 of yours.
anyway, what I meant to say before I got off topic was that top tier schools basically need the stats to really consider you, and the extra fluff is just a bonus after that. So maybe tone down a couple of your commitments and really hit the books to gain another 50pts on ur SAT and another 3 or 4 on ACT and take a few more APs. APs really aren't THAT tough and if you take a bunch it looks really impressive. (this is where I give the obligatory brag- I took 12). heh, seriously though, if you get up to a 31ACT and a 1410 SAT you are good to go for sure
By Stuckat410 (Stuckat410) on Thursday, August 26, 2004 - 12:28 pm: Edit
But w/my stats as of now, I'm not "good to go for sure"? just wondering...
I don't think I'll be able to raise my SAT score any higher.. As you can see, I had an 1190 first try, and I was extremely lucky to get that 1380. I have absolutely NO idea how my score went up that high... so I'm pretty sure if I take it again, it won't be a 1380. My original goal had been a 1250 when I took the SAT my second time. And if I were to re-take the SAT, I'd take it in the beginning of October... (isn't it too late to register?), meaning I'd only be sending my application later... I was planning to have it in at the end of September. Is it worth waiting to send in my app in order to retake the SAT? Because I've heard that it's a lot easier to get accepted if you apply early..
What do you think?

Apply to Michigan in Sept, your SAT is good enough by FAR. Then apply ED to Northwestern, you have a decent shot there...
By Alexandre (Alexandre) on Thursday, August 26, 2004 - 04:06 pm: Edit
Actually Slipper, 1380 is avergage at Michigan. But she does have a decent chance of getting in.
By Neobez (Neobez) on Thursday, August 26, 2004 - 10:15 pm: Edit
^? I thought average was in the high 1200s? Or are you talking just of out of state stats?
By Alexandre (Alexandre) on Friday, August 27, 2004 - 04:07 am: Edit
The mid 50% SAT range for entering Freshmen at Michigan is 1200-1420. The average SAT at Michigan is 1310. But this is including the schools of Music, Kinesiology, Art and Design, Nursing and Natural Resources and Enviornment. Those schools make up 20% of the university and the mean SAT score at those schools is about 1200. But those require a completely different set of skills. Only the nation's best musicians get into the school of music. They do not really care about grades. As long as your GPA is over 3.3 and your SAT is over 1100, you qualify academically for the school of Music. Same with the colleges of Art, Natural Resources and Environment and Nursing. The school of Kinesiology is an excuse to enroll Michigan's Football and Basketball team. Of course, other mediocre students in the state of Michigan would rather get a degree from Michigan's school of Kinesiology than get a respectable degree from a mediocre university, so they too apply to the school of Kinesiology. The average GPA at the school of Kinesiology is about 3.1 and the mean SAT is about 1100. Students at those college cannot transfer into the other, more academic colleges of the University. Those 20% drop the mean GPA and mean SAT by quite a bit. But at the same, time, those students cannot really benefit from the university as a whole.
But for the academic colleges (Pharmacy, Business, Architecture and Planning, Arts and Sciences and Engineering), the mean SAT is closer to 1350. For out of staters, the mean at those schools is about 1370.
