How much harder is it to get accepted RD than SCEA? Does it matter if there is a legacy status involved?

Legacy seems to be very important at Stanford.

I don't know what the previous poster was thinking, but legacy is not the deciding factor in admission. If anything, it will tip the scale between two similarly qualified applicants, but nothing else. You won't get in if you're unqualified, legacy status notwithstanding.

Well, I hope I am qualified enough to have my legacy status count. For my sake, (and I know that's why you would!) could anyone say in a rough percentage wise my chances. I will be brief.
780 math 690 verbal
750+ math IIC, 800 physics, 740+ Writing.
Strong band program with a few state awards. Will make pitch for them to take me based on strong marching percussion backround.
From Midwest, Legacy, Physics Major, Have a job, no sports, a few minor other things. Mediocre school. EXCELLENT recs from teachers, as many AP's as school offers. Straight A kid.
Thanks, I would really appreciate it! And I am still assuming that, especially with legacy status, I will have better luck if I apply SCEA. Correct?

jerew i was wondering r u going to submit a cd or something, coz i'm into drumming too, but is it ok to send a cd under the fine arts submission form?
| By Jerew (Jerew) on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 12:39 pm: Edit |
I was thinking about sending in a video, since a lot of Tenor Drumming is visual. (Suppose I could send in CD of a Marimba Solo) I was just wondering how to do this, will it help, and how good does it have to be to not negatively affect the admissions decision. I also figure that Stanford will be most likely to appreciate marching band percussion, since they have the LSJUMB.

what all percussion instruments do you play?

Just curious Jerew, where in the midwest are you, and what school do you go to?
| By Jerew (Jerew) on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 03:28 pm: Edit |
I play the tenor drums, marimba, kinda jazz set, want to learn jazz vibes, and all sorts of assorted stuff. I am from Southern Minnesota, and go to Waseca Senior high School.

i probably won't send in a CD, but I will explain that the extreme involvement in the drumline. Any word on chances (above 30%?)

Is 690 Verbal too low for Stanford SCEA? If I were to be deffered, I could raise my verbal and let them know.

bump - yeah I have the exact same problem as Jerew.

Here are my two-cents (and only based on my experience and about 20 other applicants I know):
Applying EA does give you an advantage if you are a strong candidate in the first place (but does not boost your chances just because you applied early if you're a low borderline anyway) due to the Single-Choice portion of Stanford's Early Action Program. Keep in mind, some of the top top top students MAY apply to Harvard, MIT, Caltech, etc. EA and then apply to Stanford during RD just for strategic purposes.
This is the important part though, through my observation, if you are deferred EA and you are the same caliber/stats (essentially they like your profile exactly the same as and RD applicant), they'll take the RD person.
Bottom Line: Once you're deferred, the likelihood that you'll be admitted later is extremely minute.
btw: as a member of the entering class of 2008, i applied and was admitted RD (while alongside me, there were (IMO) better candidates who were deferred EA (to me, primarily due to the fact that it is EA and they can only admit a certain number) and then rejected.

so its kind of like putting all of my eggs in one basket? What do you think about admission in my particular case? (See 4th post on this thread
