List all the components you've sent in thus far, and keep everyone updated on what else you need to send!

Applying: Early Action

Part I (Basic Information/Data Sheet): SENT

Part II (Academic Information/Core Extracurriculars, etc.,): IN PROGRESS

SSR (Secondary School Report): SENT / ARRIVED (My counselor showed me the return receipt.. I gulped when I looked at it)

Teacher's Report:
(1) Recommendation given to AP English Language/AP English Literature Teacher (English Dept. Chairperson) - NOT SENT

(1) Recommendation given to AP US History/AP Psychology/History Dept. Chair - NOT SENT

Midyear Report:

Well, considering we're still in school, and we're a quarterway through the year, I'd say that we don't have a midyear report to issue.

Sundry:

One or two outside recommendations.

Command Record (?) Maybe.

I know there are other Hopeful Hoyas out there..

By Neobez (Neobez) on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 10:20 am: Edit

Haven't sent or done jack shazbot, but I'm not doing EA. I'm gonna start asking for recommendations and counselor/trancscript stuff sometime in September.

I've begun on the essays to an extent. . .I'll probably send in the Part I form sometime in late September/early october.

I'll probably send a dvd of a short film I made.

ME:

Applying: Early Action

Part I (Basic Information/Data Sheet): Sent
Part II (Academic Information/Core Extracurriculars, etc.,): Working on it (this is causing me soo much stress!)

SSR (Secondary School Report): Will get it the first week of September

Teacher's Report: Will ask the first week of September (that's the first week of school for me)

Midyear Report:

Nope

Are you guys attaching a resume?

By Garyan13 (Garyan13) on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 01:33 pm: Edit

I can't decide between EA at georgetown and others or ED at Penn. Is it going to hurt me to hold off on sending part 1 for another week or so since you have to indicate early action?

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 01:34 pm: Edit

I might, depending on how I feel about it. I'll ask a couple of Hoyalumni in Los Angeles to see their reaction to a resume.

By Clipper (Clipper) on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 01:52 pm: Edit

My daughter attached her resume. There was no way that she could get all the stuff she did on that one page. They can read it or choose not to but I would send it. Couldn't hurt.

By Fallentear04 (Fallentear04) on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 03:16 pm: Edit

Oh, potential '09 Hoyas; it is not yet time to panic. Start panicking in late October if you haven't started your application yet. Start obsessing in December over what the mailman may carry in his purse. You'll only waste the best year of your high school career if you panic now.

By Calidan (Calidan) on Monday, August 23, 2004 - 12:56 am: Edit

Applying: Early Action

Part I (Basic Information/Data Sheet):
Completed, but not sent. I tend to procrastinate.

Part II (Academic Information/Core Extracurriculars, etc.,):
Has been worked on, but far from completed.

SSR (Secondary School Report):
haven't even thought about it.

Teacher's Report:
I have already expressed interest to a teacher for a reccomendation, but I can't decide who to get my 2nd one from

Midyear Report:
What Tlaktan said.

And that little "panic" voice in my head is getting louder every day...

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Monday, August 23, 2004 - 01:38 am: Edit

Your head too, Calidan? Mine is exploding from the word "panic."

By Manderz (Manderz) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 12:43 am: Edit

Geez you guys- it's not even September! I haven't even officially started my senior year yet.

I sent in my Data sheet. I'm holding on to part II until they come pry it out of my hands.

How about senior classes? what are you all taking this year?

By Manderz (Manderz) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 12:52 am: Edit

We also need a how-are-we-ever-going-to-pay-for-these-ridiculously-expensive-east-coast-colleges-if-by-some-sick-twist-of-luck-we-get-in support group

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 12:57 am: Edit

Manderz: I started my senior year and am at the midterm point (just past) of my first semester.

Oy lordy.

I am taking: AP Biology, AP US History (don't ask, scheduling screwup), AP Psychology, AP English Literature, Tutoring, ROTC, Statistics, and Principles of Mathematics.

Also, I don't need to worry about payment, my family is categorized under the need category.

By Calidan (Calidan) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 01:34 am: Edit

I officially start my senior year tomorrow.

My classes are: AP English, AP French, AP Environmental Science, Spanish IV, Civics and Economics (each a semester long, required for graduation), and Statistics.

Payment also isn't a problem for me, because I've had a college fund accumulating since I was barely in the woom- my Grandma is really adamant about me getting an education. I guess I'm really lucky for that!

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 02:00 am: Edit

Calidan: California requirements, right? I fulfilled Econ/Poli Sci in 10th grade, so eh. A year of each.

Environmental Science is pretty cool.

By Hoya_Saxa01 (Hoya_Saxa01) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 02:14 am: Edit

Don't tell anybody I said this but I did my entire application (of course I had school forms/recommendations done with enough time) the week before it was due for Early Decision.... I did get deferred but eventually got in. So, what I'm trying to say is... don't stress so much but stress a little. Give it time, though. The calendar page for "September" has yet to see daylight and you have plenty of time. Good luck to all of you and keep us posted!

By Calidan (Calidan) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 06:58 pm: Edit

I have a question for everyone: do you think it will look that bad and/or have an impact on my chances of admission if I decide to drop Spanish IV? It's a hard class and the teacher is all but desirable- I also feel that 3 APs will add stress to this year that would be greatly alleviated by not having to deal with Spanish IV work as well.

Any thoughts? Please help, I only have until next wednesday to decide!

[NOTE: see my schedule, above]

By Calidan (Calidan) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 06:59 pm: Edit

Oops, forgot to add this: Yes, they are California requirements. Where in Cali do you live, Tlaktan?

By Manderz (Manderz) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 07:28 pm: Edit

Calidan,

Were you the linguistics guy? I think you should stick with it- Spanish shouldn't be too hard (but I guess it depends on your school, etc)..will it hurt you? Depends on what you replace it with, but, considering you've got AP French and three years of Spanish (I'm assuming) I wouldn't worry!

California requirements suck. I have to take two extra classes at the community college to fulfill my Visual Performing Art. They're turning out to be ok though.

Tlaktan, what kind of school do you go to!? I can't believe you've already done that much...you graduate sooner than June then, I assume? Or is it year-round type deal?

As far as college..I don't think my parents ever expected me to decide to go to a private school...Both of my brothers go to UCSD, so I'll be the first person in my family to have not gone to a UC school..(I'm not applying to any of them). My mom has no sympathy; she paid for her college in loans...I plan on doing the same...

This whole Expected Family Contribution thing is downright ridiculous...We're expected to chip in 1/3 of our parents' salaries? So I have two brothers at UCSD..that's 2/3...and then wherever I end up...1/3...Ok, taxes...that's about 2/3..Does anyone else see a problem here?

I wonder if Georgetown has any Veterans programs..I doubt it because it's private.

Oh yea- my senior year:
AP Gov't, AP Calc BC, AP English Lit, AP Spanish Lit, Yearbook, AP Euro History..and the two art history classes. yayyyy..

This has been a long post, but I have one more question- how many teacher recommendations are needed for the application? Just one and then the counselor one?

By Clipper (Clipper) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 07:32 pm: Edit

I would think (but I am not YOUR parent LOL) that you could drop the Spanish if you kept the AP French. They would be impressed I would think that you took 3 years of Spanish - how many years of French? I am not sure how many you would normally have to be in AP. My daughter was in IB and skipped a year in Spanish so she could be in AP Span so I don't know traditionally how many years a student would have.
Good luck and remember I am just giving my opinion!

By Calidan (Calidan) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 09:16 pm: Edit

Manderz- I'm actually the French guy... LOL. Also, Spanish IV at my school is actually a challenging and somewhat time-consuming course. I would replace Spanish with, um, a free period. Hehehe...

Clipper- I would definitely keep AP French, no question about that. Yes, I have taken 3 years of Spanish, and this will be my fifth year of French. I tried to get into AP Spanish, but was unable to. A girl in my same class was able to only because she had already taken an AP language course (French). I don't see really how this applies, since French isn't Spanish. We we're at the same level in Spanish, so (in my opinion) I think it is unfair that they let her skip ahead. Oh well, that's over and done with now...

In order to "make up" for my lack of Spanish this year, I will most likely take German or Italian or something (introductory course) at a local Community College.

Also, do you all think that having 2 free periods will be looked down upon by colleges? Will they be like "oh, he's just a slacker," even though I'm taking 3 AP courses? (I know that that doesn't seem like a lot, but the max you can take at my school senior year is 4. Also, our AP courses are extremely challenging and comprehensive- I know a lot of schools that just stick "AP" in front of a normal course, so this is why I'm saying this.)

Thanks for all the help! Any other thoughts?

P.S.- Sorry, guys, I know I sound a little obsessive and/or whiney , but I just don't know what to do! This is what college applications do to you... I just hope I get accepted EA so I don't have to do others! This goes for everyone else who's applying EA, too! Good luck!

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 11:27 pm: Edit

Manderz,

My year round schedule sucks, but in a way it is advantageous. Why?

July - October = Schooling
Late October - December = Vacation
January - April = Schooling
Late April - Vacation (AP Exam Cram Time)
May - Vacation
June something or another - Graduation.

It's more intensive, but then again. Eh.

And yes, I hate California requirements.

By Manderz (Manderz) on Friday, August 27, 2004 - 01:55 am: Edit

That's a pretty spiffy schedule- it's probably really good for traveling. I bet you could get some cheap rates in like October when no one else can travel.

Calidan, as for two free periods- I personally, would not. I was under the impression by my guidance counselor that even a 100% filled schedule (with APs, no less) would still not be sufficient for Georgetown.

My situation was, I was trying to weasel out of Calculus. The Calc would have been replaced by Spanish Lit (A much more college prep class for the SFS, you would think). My counselor told me that Georgetown was "too scary" to mess around so I ended up taking Calc AND Lit..and have a heavy community college load too. Not exactly what he had in mind, I think..he told me he was "deeply concerned" that my schedule would be "too much"..

I'll teach him to make me take Calculus! Bwahahah!

As far as your situation, I'm not sure how a college would think if you had two free periods but college classes. But if you can take the German- go for it! I started last year and just had SO much fun. I'll be taking my second semester in the spring. (It's just cool, when people hear you're learning German, they're like SAY SOMETHING SAME SOMETHING! And then you turn to them and with a really angry voice say: WIE HEISST DU?! and then they go: whoa! whoa! what's it mean what's it mean! And then I say "What's your name?" It's classic

Ok, way longer response than need be..

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Friday, August 27, 2004 - 02:10 am: Edit

What recommendations will you guys be receiving? Will you be receiving any outside recommendations?

As for my schedule.. it's not as tough as it seems.

Georgetown can tell from my transcript that I am NOT mathematically/scientifically oriented. I am Social Sciences oriented. My proof?

All Social Studies Courses
-------------------------
World History AB
United States History (Community College, History 11)
Political Science 1 at Community College
History 1 (Western Civilization) at Community College
Economics at Community College
Psychology at Community College
AP Psychology
AP United States History

English
-------------
Honors English 9AB
Honors English 10AB
AP English Language
AP English Literature

I'm thinking about doing AP Comparative Gov't independent study..

My school doesn't offer too many languages, and the language I took was restricted at Level 3. Spanish was full, so they put me in my native language, but my counselor will write that my schedule was blocked off from taking Spanish 1st year.. I also have a year of Japanese buried under all the transcripts somewhere, but.. ehh..

My counselor can affirm that I can speak both Korean and Japanese fluently and semi-fluently, respectively.

By Neobez (Neobez) on Friday, August 27, 2004 - 07:41 pm: Edit

georgetown only asks for one rec, right?

my schedule's really loaded, i just hope colleges recognize that. . .
IB Math HL
AP Calculus bc
IB World Area Studies
IB English 12
AP Latin IV
AP Spanish
IB Chemistry II
IB Theory of Knowledge

those are my 8 blocks. . .

By Manderz (Manderz) on Saturday, August 28, 2004 - 12:27 pm: Edit

Georgetown asks for one teacher rec, and one counselor rec.

As for my recommendations...I know my 10th grade math teacher and the advisor of the Tutoring Center (which I'm VP of) will give me a good rec. I just don't know whether that will look bad coming from a 10th grade Math teacher.

I could do my 11th grade English teacher, who thought I was pretty smart..but I was a bit of a slacker in that class (I don't really respond to passive teaching..I'm lazy unless challenge)..the teacher READ to us like 3rd graders..yeah I'll end it there.

Tlak, I would SINCERELY HOPE! you would not get dinged on the languages. Japanese and Korean, even if your native language, is quite a feat, I think.

By Brenner87 (Brenner87) on Saturday, August 28, 2004 - 03:01 pm: Edit

Should u attach a resume to the App, and how would one attach outside recommendations, I have an alumni who could write one.

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Saturday, August 28, 2004 - 07:19 pm: Edit

Thanks Manderz -- I am sending two teacher recommendations (one has already been sent to Georgetown, my 11th and 12th grade AP English instructor.) Well, I'm not sending it, but you catch my drift.

I am pondering whether to send a third, my Korean teacher, who can say vouch for my lingual abilities, as well as my ability to thrive @ Georgetown.. But that may be stuffing Georgetown with a little bit too much...

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Saturday, August 28, 2004 - 07:24 pm: Edit

I don't want to burden them with recommendations, though.. My ROTC instructors also want to send a recommendation, and a copy of my command record, with all the important things highlighted. I'm kinda skeptical about this..

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Saturday, August 28, 2004 - 07:32 pm: Edit

Did anyone catch this?

Quote:

They should follow the normal
application procedure except that the
transcript should show three years of
high school work, and SAT or ACT
scores should be from the junior year.

SAT or ACT scores should be from the JUNIOR year?

Hrmm.

I was reading the instructions and I caught that. Eh. I should just ignore it, but, I'm paranoid.

By Manderz (Manderz) on Sunday, August 29, 2004 - 04:30 am: Edit

I don't think that the 'Junior' matters, if that's what you're wondering..I think it's more like if you can get it in before early decision decision time? I don't know.

By Calidan (Calidan) on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 - 11:43 pm: Edit

Eek. I just dropped Spanish because I could not possibly even entertain the thought of having a year-long class with her; I could probably learn more on my own. Also, she gave a 'D' to my older brother for plagiarism (a false accusation, but he was a senior already accepted to college and didn't want to deal with it. This, however, did not jeapordize his acceptance), and she said that she was going to "keep an eye on me." I was kind of taken aback by this, and figured it would be better just to not deal with her.

OK! Enough with my long-winded explanations...

The point is: I dropped the class and I'm scared how that will reflect on me and my application. I have, however, decided to get an after school job that will make up for my "spare" time. I have also just taken a position in a club at my school that is very involved (dealing with student-staff relations, academic stress, student problems like drugs, anorexia, peer-pressure, etc.).

I'm not sure what else I can do to make up for my slacker-esque schedule (even thoguh it is still a difficult and challenging one!). I am retaking my SAT IIs in October (Math IC and Writing, ugh.), and I might retake my SAT Is in November (which I believe is still acceptable for EA?). I hope that these "measures" I have taken will suffice. Needless to say, I am a little nervous.

I'm just glad that others are going through these applications and the entire process with me. The support of this board has been and I am sure will continue to be invaluable.

Thanks!

By Manderz (Manderz) on Wednesday, September 01, 2004 - 12:01 am: Edit

Eek Calidan. Sounds like a bad situation with that teacher...it's definitely better you got out.

I think I'm going to take my SAT Is and IIs again, too. All my friends are like, why bother? But my IIs were pretty low (ie, not one above 700), so I was thinking I'd take a stab, maybe not slack on math this time? hehe.

Hope everyone's having fun at school- it was a bit of a shock to go back..and sit in a chair for six hours straight again. The year has already revealed itself to be full of stuff.

By Calidan (Calidan) on Wednesday, September 01, 2004 - 01:25 am: Edit

I'm actually really excited for this year since I am taking so many interesting classes... and, of course, it IS senior year.

We've kind of got the same situation, Manderz: both my Math and Writing scores were below 700, and I'd just really love to get them over that mark. Actually, for all I care, they could both be exactly 700 and I would be perfectly content.

And on the subject of sitting for 6 hours straight: I really think that recess needs to be reinstated.

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Wednesday, September 01, 2004 - 02:36 am: Edit

Welcome to the six-hour world. I've been here since July. Actually, I just started my community college classes, so my schedule *REALLY* looks like this:

7:30-3:15 : School
3:15-4:30 : ROTC Practice
4:45-6:30 : Sundry activities
6:50-10:00pm : Community College Class

This is Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

On Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, my schedule looks like:

(Wed/Fri)
7:30-3:15 - School
3:15-4:30 - ROTC Practice
4:45-6:00 - Gym
6:30 - Home

(Saturday)
9:00-12:00 - ROTC Practice
1:00-3:00 - Gym
3:30-5:30 - Some miscellaneous activity
6:00 - Home

(Sunday)
10:00-3:30 - Church

How do your schedules look? :P

And Calidan: I am quite sure you can get your SAT II scores over that mark.

By Manderz (Manderz) on Friday, September 03, 2004 - 01:50 am: Edit

So! I signed up for the October SAT IIs..I'm taking Spanish and Writing. I decided against math to just focus on the two. And then I signed up for the SAT I in December, so if Georgetown rejects me then I can hopefully send them a higher SAT score, not that it will make much of a difference. But oh well.

Mondays
7:45-2:30 School (3 classes a day in 2 hour blocks)
2:30-5:00 Plethora of school related activities, Yearbook editors' meeting, general yearbook work, or tutoring
6:45-9:45 Art Orientation at the Community College

Tuesdays
7:45-2:30 School
Afterwards riding, homework, or any other clubs as needed

Wednesdays
7:45-2:30 School
2:30-5:00 Riding
5:00-8:30 Tutoring

Thursdays,
Mondays, but with after school stuff replaced with riding, and night class is more intense

Fridays
7:45-2:30 school
and then whatever

Does anyone else ever feel by the end of the week that you're tooo tired to do anything else? Most of the time weekends I just want to spend doing nothing, and just relax!

Applying EA, sending my Part 1 this weekend.

Hey, what is everyone doing for their essay?

By Calidan (Calidan) on Friday, September 10, 2004 - 07:27 pm: Edit

Hello again, everyone! I've been almost too busy to come on recently! Sorry I'm too lazy to post my schedule, but I think it's safe to say that all of yours look harder than mine!

I have a question for anyone (and everyone, the more feedback the better!) to answer:

I am planning on taking a class at UC Berkeley (I live like 10 minutes away), but I can't decide which one. Here are the choices:
-Italian I
-Portuguese I
-Viatnamese I (I am kind of skeptical about this one, though. I tend to prefer romance languages)

Which course do you all think Georgetown would "like" the most? They are pretty much all equal to me (except maybe Viatnamese), so I really don't care. All I care about is whichever one will help me get into Georgetown! Seriously, though, Italian and Portuguese are pretty equal in my eyes, so I thought I should just choose the one Georgetown would look most highly upon.

Thanks in advance!

PS- Tlaktan: How goes the app.?

Application Status:

Early Action

Part I - Sent
Part II - Will Be submitted after review from English Lit Teacher
Teacher Recommendation I - Sent
Teacher Recommendation II - Will be Sent by Teacher on Monday or Tuesday.. or Wednesday.. sometime this week.
Counselor Recommendation - Sent and received
Outside Recommendation I - Contact established
Outside Recommendation II - Yet to call the Military Order..

I'm thinking for one of my essays.. to provide a couple of supplementary visuals.. It's a picture of me with my classmates + Sen. Slade Gorton and Richard Ben Veniste of the 9-11 Commission, along with a copy of their note to me. It goes with the essay.

By Manderz (Manderz) on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 02:48 am: Edit

Ummm, what are we supposed to do about the interview?

The sheet made it sound like someone would be in contact with us...but I have yet to be contacted?

By Clipper (Clipper) on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 11:28 am: Edit

Manderz - the interviewer will call you - don't worry they are probably getting their lists as the names come in.
Good luck!

By Calidan (Calidan) on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 03:37 pm: Edit

So does anyone have an opinion on which class I should take? I need to decide by monday. Thanks!

PS- I just sent in my part one! Yay! EA Application Process: officially started.

Italian. Stick to romance.

By Clipper (Clipper) on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 04:39 pm: Edit

I don't think it really matters. I don't know if they even have vietnamese at Georgetown so I would go with the other two choices. Either way it shows you are interested in languages and you aren't the typical high school student.
Good luck!

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 05:25 pm: Edit

Clipper, do you think I should send the following:

It's for the first essay, I would think a couple of visuals would be nice. (It's not my entire class, only 3 other classmates were with me at the time..) But bleh..

So how long does it take to get an identification number after you send in your part I? What about an appointment for an interview?

By Clipper (Clipper) on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 07:36 am: Edit

Tlaktan - It wouldn't hurt I guess as long as it goes with the essay. Sending it in w/o a reason would be an ego thing. Remember you are selling yourself so do what you feel gives you the best shot and lets them know who you are and what you can do for the university.

Calidan - my daughter got an ID number when they sent her a letter after they got her PSAT scores. They told her to use that number on all correspondence. So she did then when she sent in her application they confirmed with another ID number. She had to call to see which one she should use and they wanted the second one. So since you didn't get one the first time they will send you one in a letter later. The appointments came later. She applied the first of Jan and her interview was late Jan.

Well, what I did was for the All Applicants Essay, I wrote a brief glimpse (one day) in my life, in the hopes to show myself. I hope I didn't butcher it or anything and was supposed to tell it in the third-person, storytelling form.. Bah.

The picture is from towards the end of the day, when we're at a dinner. Besides, I think its a bit grisly to send pictures of a funeral :/

By Calidan (Calidan) on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 09:30 pm: Edit

For the all applicants essay, it says to do a (more or less) creative or biographical essay about yourself. So which kind of essay is everyone thinking of doing (or has everyone done)? I think I'm going to do a creative one, but I'm not sure what about. I already have some drafts about sitting in my kitchen watching my family, and I think it's okay. What about everyone else?

I did OK on the SAT, but it definitely shows my strong liberal arts leanings (800 verbal, 620 math). Georgetown is not my first choice, but if I don't get into any of the military academies, it's where I would prefer to go. Sorry for the long post, by the way!

Hmmm... well one thing that might help us estimate your chances is your GPA and class ranking! Just kidding, you probably just forgot. :)

Everything else looks really good, just one question: have you done most of those ECs for a long time in high school?

I wouldn't say that you're "definitely" in (nobody really is!), but you do have a good shot. Good luck!

Last I checked (this has nothing to do with Georgetown), the NROTC battalion (or whatever you call them) is at George Washington University, and Georgetown is the affiliate school. Georgetown sponsors the AROTC, the Hoya Battalion! Hooah.. ;)

(Sorry, I had to put it in)

lol, you're right Calidan! I don't know what I was thinking! I have a 4.01/4.00, and am ranked 21/500 rank. (this should drop to 12-15 or so out of 500 by the end of the semester). I go to the best public high school in Alabama, and something like 97 percent goes on to college.

Sorry to disappoint you, Tlaktan, but I'm shooting for the NROTC, Marine Option Scholarship. Ooorah! lmao, but I'm applying to Army as well.

Have you guys been up to visit GT yet? I went over the summer. It was really nice, but not as nice as I expected it to be. HOWEVER, I don't think anyone could ask for a better surrounding area for college students!

I'm struggling with the essays...because I'm not sure how I want to present myself. It's a potentially very broad topic.

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 - 08:28 pm: Edit

US Army Hooah! :-P.. I think you would be better off with the Army, but whatever you see fit is fine. Army ROTC is a great program, all the ROTC programs are, but.. you want to be Marine Corps. That's fine too. Course, don't let my local recruiter (I'm not joining, but I'm a POC for her).. hear that though, otherwise she'll convince you ten ways to sundown on why not to go into the MC. I think all the services are fine, though.

Okay, an update..

Applying: Early Action

Part I (Basic Information/Data Sheet): SENT

Part II (Academic Information/Core Extracurriculars, etc.,): IN PROGRESS

SSR (Secondary School Report): SENT / ARRIVED (My counselor showed me the return receipt.. I gulped when I looked at it)

Teacher's Report:
(1) Recommendation given to AP English Language/AP English Literature Teacher (English Dept. Chairperson) - SENT / ARRIVED

(1) Recommendation given to AP US History/AP Psychology/History Dept. Chair - SENT (My History teacher sent it today)

Midyear Report:

Well, considering we're still in school, and we're a quarterway through the year, I'd say that we don't have a midyear report to issue.

Sundry:

JROTC Recommendation - Sent

Resume - Sent

MOWW/Freedom's Foundation - Contacting

Whew..

By Neobez (Neobez) on Thursday, September 16, 2004 - 04:53 pm: Edit

I just gave some teacher recommendation forms + activity sheet to one of my teachers for dartmouth, emory, and UNC. I'll give the Georgetown one to my Latin teacher of 4 years next week, along with a few other schools.

I'll probably send Part 1 sometime soon. . .I'm not Early Action though, so I guess there's no particular rush for me.

BTW. Is it acceptable to send these extra recommendations? I might have my english teacher send one to Georgetown if that is the case. Sometimes I get the feeling that they only want what they ask for. . .is this assumption correct?

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Thursday, September 16, 2004 - 08:32 pm: Edit

Uhoh..

Oh dear. Time to go schedule the interview.

i only got 1 teacher recommendation in the mail... did everyone get 2?

thanx

By Manderz (Manderz) on Monday, September 20, 2004 - 01:20 am: Edit

Tlaktan when did you get that?

OK, OK...I was calm before but now I really am wigging. I'm going to meet with my counselor tomorrow to talk about his recommendation, turn in all my secondary school report forms and my brag packet (my class has about 600 people, the brag packet is the biggest way to get to know us).

Part I: In and Received
Part II: Working on It
Secondary School Report: Giving it away tomorrow!
Teacher Recs: Given to two teachers (do you think I'll get marked down for this?) Yearbook and Alg II/Trig (she's also in charge of the school's tutoring center that I work at, it's #1 in the state!)
SAT Scores: Sent
Interview: Still waiting!

I have a major tension headache..and so much homework!

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Monday, September 20, 2004 - 02:13 am: Edit

I got it about four days ago. (Interview, I mean) My SSR, teacher recs are all done (YAY!).. only part left is Part II, and I'm already done with that.. (my English teacher gave my revisions back, as soon as I put them in and then turn it into her for final review, then off to GU it goes.

I don't think we'll be marked down for two teachers. I'll probably be marked down for having two teachers, a JROTC recommender, and an organizational recommender..

No homework for me.. 90% of my classes are study, study, study only!

You sure you want to go with Yearbook, though? You must have other choices.. Yearbook is non-academic :/

Meanwhile, I'm doing my research on North Korea. Fun, fun, fun! :P

By Manderz (Manderz) on Monday, September 20, 2004 - 10:13 pm: Edit

Yes,

I'm doing Yearbook because at my school it's a huge deal. Our book is 400 pages, full color and INSANE. The teacher and I have a really good rapport, plus, I'm the Managing Editor so I'm basically responsible for managing the entire class, setting up agendas for each day and giving grades when it comes time. It's a very uncharateristic class because basically it's 100% student run except for computer repair which is what our teacher does. The rest, we take care. Plus, he and I talk politics, and his son goes to Harvard...so he knows what it takes.

Maybe it'll be a kiss of death, but the way I see it, my GPA and course load vouch for me academically..but my Yearbook teacher knows me responsibility wise, leadership wise, and in general much better.

UPDATE!

Applying: Early Action

Part I (Basic Information/Data Sheet): Finally sent!

Part II (Academic Information/Core Extracurriculars, etc.,): Not completed, obviously not sent.

SSR (Secondary School Report): Pretty easy to do, but I haven't yet.

Teacher's Report: I have already asked one teacher for a reccomendation, but I'm not sure about my second. We do need two reccomendations, right? Also: does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of teachers colleges like to see reccomendations from (i.e. is english better than chemistry, or is there a better choice)?

Midyear Report: Is it midyear yet? I don't think so.

I really need to start working on my essay; not only do I need it to apply, but it's also an official assignment in my AP English class! We have to write our essay for our first choice college and then bring it in to class, so other students and the teacher can help us.

P.S.- Is anyone visiting anytime soon? I'm going in November, over Thanksgiving break.

By Sportula (Sportula) on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 - 03:18 pm: Edit

I don't know if it has changed but I only needed and only sent in one teacher rec, plus a counselor rec of course. Maybe they've changed it since last year though.

By Netshark2005 (Netshark2005) on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 - 10:31 pm: Edit

By Manderz (Manderz) on Wednesday, September 22, 2004 - 02:28 am: Edit

You only need one rec, but I sent two because I did a non Academic teacher (Yearbook) and an academic teacher, but in the wrong year (10)..I included my 10th grade math teacher because I tutor for her, and she can vouch for me!

By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Thursday, September 23, 2004 - 09:25 pm: Edit

Yey!! Class schedule for Spring (Starting 2 January 05) Semester!!

AP Biology
AP English Literature
Honors Sociology (really just prep for AP Psychology)
AP US History
JROTC
Tutoring

Originally, this was going to be it, but my APSCS (Assistant Principal of Secondary Counseling Services) approved two new ones just for me (I'll take them independent study, but I will get credit for the courses):

AP Comparative Government (not offered at my school, so I am taking it Independent Study)
AP Macro-economics (once again, read above)

And perhaps still under the cooking oven..

AP Micro-economics
AP Human Geography
or
AP European History

I have to come up with the Independent Study proposal, let the Social Studies chairperson review it, then she'll take it to the APSCS to get it confirmed. I think I can take ONE of the above.. Wow, 7 APs.. I'm sure I'll want to shoot myself by the end of the Senior year.. but

By Manderz (Manderz) on Friday, September 24, 2004 - 01:21 am: Edit

I'm taking AP Euro right now - it's a cool class.
