Bye Chicane! We will probably pass each other anonymously at Georgetown this weekend. It's kind of strange being on this board "chatting" with all of you and now the time has come where you all will meet. I will just be a parent moving my daughter in and saying good bye!
Have a great year and keep posting on here to let us know how classes are going and give the next class some helpful hints on what they can expect.

Have a good flight!

Everyone is saying "this weekend". I thought the dorms don't open until the 27th and 28th?

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 01:31 pm: Edit

see you on the best floor at Harbin!

Gtownmom, yes the dorms open then, for United States students. However, internationals have to be there if they're going to orientation on the 25th I think, so he's leaving today to get some things done before moving in for int'l orientation.

By Gtownmom (Gtownmom) on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:27 pm: Edit

Oh, I see. Here's wishing Chicane and all the other international students a safe trip! Hope to see you at G'town.

Gtownmom - sorry I was mistaken too. We are getting there on Thursday - I guess I am in a time warp!
When are you getting there?

By Gtownmom (Gtownmom) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 08:44 am: Edit

We are taking our minivan loaded with stuff and leave Dallas in the morning on Wednesday, August 25th (my 20th wedding anniversary--two milestones at once!)and drive for two days arriving in D.C. on Thursday evening. My husband has never been to D.C. so we will be tourists Friday and my son moves into Harbin Friday evening. We are staying at a hotel with secure, underground parking so the van full of stuff should be okay. We'll see D.C. using the subway (my son and I are pros since our last visit!). I can't wait to show my husband where all our money is going! We are all thrilled but as a mom it's bitter sweet as well (my firstborn moving 1300 miles away). What are your plans? Also, did you see we got the class of 2008 "yearbook" thing? It's fun to see all the faces, etc. See my entry at thread with that info....

By Clipper (Clipper) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 09:44 am: Edit

No, I didn't get a yearbook! Did you order separately?

We are leaving Thursday morning - we are only 3 hours south of DC. Not sure if our hotel has a secured garage but we may move the important stuff to the room until she moves in. Where are you staying? We are at the Key Bridge Marriott.
Just so happens her roommate from CA is also there too!
She moves in Friday not Sat. She was "stuck" in Darnall which they made into a freshman dorm rather than the usual transfer/sophomore dorm. We went to a GT gathering the other night and a senior was there and he said that they finally figured out that they should give the freshman the crappy dorm instead of the sophomores. So yes, my d is in that dorm. One advantage is that she moves in Friday instead of Sat. So instead of us sightseeing we will be moving in. Sat schedule has many things going on - meetings etc.
I personally love DC (grew up there) so I am sure your H will enjoy what it has to offer.
This is my last child going off into the world so now I can have peace! LOL Hope it is beautiful weather next weekend.

By Gtownmom (Gtownmom) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 10:04 am: Edit

To be honest, I don't recall if we ordered this thing or not. There was so much paperwork!

We're staying at the Holiday Inn in Rosslyn (Key Bridge) because I wanted that secure garage. For parent's weekend we have one of the 140 rooms in the Marriot right on campus (in the Leavey Center).

What do you think about the President's nephew being in the class of 2008? And what do you make of my son's mystery roommate not appearing in the book????

By Clipper (Clipper) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 10:11 am: Edit

Yeah, about the nephew - which one is it?

I don't know what to think. Maybe he didn't respond to the book at all. Has your son emailed the roommate? Where is he from?
My d's is from CA and she is very excited about having a roomie who lives on the opposite coast.
Funny thing, my husband just got orders to DC (Pentagon) so we will be moving up there in the spring. My family is already up there so if she needs anything she just has to call. In fact, one of my sisters works in Crystal City and I can see her office from the campus! LOL

By Gtownmom (Gtownmom) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 10:40 am: Edit

Sounds like your D will have lots of support.

As far as the President's nephew, it's Bush's younger brother, Neil's son Peirce from Houston. In his picture in the book he reselmbles his uncle quite a bit. I'm sure he's a nice kid.

As far as the mystery roommate, he said he's from CA and is a science major of some kind (I don't remember what my son said exactly). But they even have the names in the back of kids who didn't respond so the entire class is represented in the book. Weird huh? I told my son to email the guy again and see what's up. We'll see.....

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 11:25 am: Edit

you should have his name from the Housing At a Glance form online. Then, there's a like a roster of some sort online that you can enter someone's name and check to see their email, net id, etc. If he's an actual student it should be there...
