I've heard of this stereotype MANY times about Gtown. On College Confidential, from friends, etc. I'm not really concerned about it(but then, i could be considered slightly preppy, lol), but I'd just like to know if there's any truth to it. Is there a large number of people who wear Abercrombie, Aeropostale, American Eagle, etc.? Are polo shirts the attire of choice for many? Basically, what is the student population like at Gtown, and what should we expect?

By Itziar (Itziar) on Friday, August 13, 2004 - 05:22 pm: Edit

Oh man, I've been getting this one all the time from my friends. I guess it comes from the fact that over 50% of G'town students came from private schools; I've also heard that there's a lot of homogenity in clothes but I don't really know....

Anyhow, I definitely wouldn't consider myself preppy, so here's at least one non-prep prefrosh. ;)

By Hoya_Saxa01 (Hoya_Saxa01) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 12:46 am: Edit

Oh yeah. Highly prep you could say. As at many elite schools, a large percentage of the school falls under the category of "popped collar" preps (private school kids who wear their collars up as a sign of high social status). And I'm with you Itziar, so there's at least two non-prep freshmen. :)

By Trojan1444 (Trojan1444) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 02:34 am: Edit

Yeah, when i visited the open hosue in Feb i was very turned off by the snobby nature of many of the students. One guy I saw who basically epitomized the G-town student stereotype was wearing loafers, khakis, a lacoste shirt (collar popped of course), and a polo hat with sunglasses on the visor.

By Chicane (Chicane) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 09:11 am: Edit

hehe, my bro told me the same thing ie gtown is a preppy school, and that i should buy slacks and lots of polo tees! :)
enh, but come on, we wont describe ourselves as preppy and snobbish, will we? ;)

By Itziar (Itziar) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 01:16 pm: Edit

Lol Trojan, I saw a guy almost just like that in April, except that he was wearing a khaki suit and Lacoste shirt. I first thought he was a teacher until he started talking about his experience studying abroad!

Hoya_Saxa01, I'm glad that I won't be a lonely non-prep! I don't even own a polo shirt, haha.

By Genova (Genova) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 02:13 pm: Edit

When I visited Georgetown a few weeks ago, there was hardly any deviation from polo shirts and short summery skirts. I was a little disappointed by that, I won't deny it. I didn't talk to any of the students, though, so I couldn't tell you anything about their personalities.

If it means anything (it did to me, heh), at least a small population of Georgetown must like Harry Potter, because they were playing it in the cafeteria. Most of the students' eyes were glued to the screen, too.

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 02:17 pm: Edit

lol genova! They have TVs in the dining halls? Or is this at the fast food court in the leavey center?

Well, I have some polo shirts, but I don't think i'm TOO preppy. I definitely don't flip up the collar, lol. I've also had a new fascination with Abercrombie, but it's not really preppy, more like pseudo-preppy,lol.

By Imahoya (Imahoya) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 05:42 pm: Edit

yeah, i heard there are a lot of preppy kids but it's a stereotype of every college that has a lot of kids coming from private schools.

As far as I'm concerned, i think people mostly notice the preps rather than the guy in a t-shirt/jeans reading on the bench. When I visited it seemed pretty split in terms of preppy kids and, well, semi-preppy kids, haha. Though I found that the people were really nice during my visit, so I am pretty sure I can overlook their fairly "preppy" fashion sense if they have a down-to-earth personality (which from my impression, was the case indeed).

Needless to say, I'm going in with open eyes and ears no matter who I meet.

You can add me under the "not-prep" column. ;)

By Genova (Genova) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 11:55 am: Edit

I don't remember the name, but to me it appeared to be a cafeteria/food court of some sort. It probably was Leavey, then. It wasn't a television; they had just projected the image (which was fairly large, actually) onto the wall.

I have quite a large collection of skirts, but in all honestly, I find polo shirts to be the most unflattering things ever. I'm not even sure why...they just don't do it for me, I guess.

By Fallentear04 (Fallentear04) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 12:04 pm: Edit

I'm not a prep! You couldn't really tell it by the outfit I'm wearing right now... unless you saw the price tags. I swear my entire outfit cost thirty dollars, and most of it is my shoes.

But yeah. I'm a public school kid. I'd probably get shot if I wore a polo (which I don't own), and have an inherent contempt for kids with popped collars.

By Hoya_Saxa01 (Hoya_Saxa01) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 12:37 pm: Edit

I also plan to go in with an open mind. However, I've talked to so many people who are so willing to conform to what the rest of the school thinks and I have strong opinions against that. Why should I stop wearing my jeans and t-shirts just because it isn't what every student at Georgetown does? I'm fairly outspoken so I can express myself as much as I need to. BUT, open mind first.

By Itziar (Itziar) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 01:11 pm: Edit

I agree w/everything you wrote, Hoya_Saxa01. =)

By Chicane (Chicane) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 02:51 pm: Edit

WHATS WRONG WITH WEARING POLO NECK T SHIRTS?? I THINK THEY LOOK VERY NICE!! lol, sorry for they caps, but who said that wearing polo tees makes one look preppy and snobbish?

By Hoyadan (Hoyadan) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 04:19 pm: Edit

I totally agree with Chicane!!!!! I love polo shirts! but that doesn't make me preppy, they just look good on me.

By Chicane (Chicane) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 04:28 pm: Edit

haha, exactly!! it will be fun being neighbours, dan!

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 05:21 pm: Edit

hey me too! Beware, I'll probably have a few excursions to Abercrombie and American Eagle. It doesn't help that they're five minutes away, lol.

very funny(though a little disturbing).

By Itziar (Itziar) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 06:26 pm: Edit

Lol, I think I'm going to be in for a culture shock once I get to G'town. ;)

By Itziar (Itziar) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 06:28 pm: Edit

Also--I love the way those Google ads work, haha. As soon as I left this thread there was an ad for "Polo Shirts On Sale, Starting at $10." =)

By Hoyadan (Hoyadan) on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 10:23 pm: Edit

I LOVE American Eagle! Gtown has matched me w/the perfect roomie!!!! lol :)

By Sportula (Sportula) on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 12:44 am: Edit

Well, I guess I dress sort of preppie, but it's mostly out of laziness. When I can buy the same basic shirt in a couple colors it makes shopping trips a whole lot shorter, which is a good thing for me (I hate shopping). I have to say though, I don't own a thing from AE and barely anything from A&F. Also, I don't "pop my collar" :) (and I don't have anything against people who do).I don't understand that anyway because up until a few years ago "true preps" never did that. Maybe they felt the need to separate themselves from the wannabe masses. Anyway, I'm sure out of everyone at Gtown every clothing style will be represented:)

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 12:55 am: Edit

cool Dan :) Now I'll have to convert you to Abercrombie as well,LOL.

By Hoya_Saxa01 (Hoya_Saxa01) on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 01:17 am: Edit

Goodness, no there's nothing wrong with polos and dressing preppy. I wore/wear polos whenever the fancy strikes me. I think we've switched over to talking about the attitude that goes along with some of the "stereotype" preppies. I love this forum because I've only met super nice people and I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you. :) Kodak moment. Hey Itziar - where are you rooming?

By Chicane (Chicane) on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 03:12 am: Edit

i say, for our orientation, we all wear khakis, a polo tee, a blazer, and loafers!!!!
we have a reputation to live up2 !!

By Itziar (Itziar) on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 08:23 am: Edit

Haha Chicane! Maybe I'll go and buy a polo just for the occasion. ;)

I'm rooming in Harbin, Hoya. I was originally in Village C but after that I got moved twice! (My roommate wanted Harbin.)

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 11:27 am: Edit

what floor?

By Itziar (Itziar) on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 03:00 pm: Edit

Eighth--pretty high up!

By Hoyadan (Hoyadan) on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 03:08 pm: Edit

You do know that on move-in day there are no elevators? It'll make good exercise going up to the 8th floor. lol

I wish those annoying popped collars stayed on the East Coast where they belong..

I went to DC this summer, laughed everytime I saw someone looking utterly ridiculous with their collars up, and then I come home to So Cal and BAM!

Those Lacoste shirts EVERYWHERE on the maniquins...with their COLLARS UP!

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 04:52 am: Edit

popped collars don't look ridiculous on everyone, at least in my opinion. Oh well, i won't be doing it, at least that much, lol.

By Jollyapplepie (Jollyapplepie) on Monday, August 23, 2004 - 02:38 pm: Edit

Downtown Georgetown is filled with "preppy" (overpriced) stores. There's Abercrombie, Banana Republic, Neimun ... something. Not sure if there's an American Eagle, but anyway, I think the neighborhood tells a little bit about the school.

By Juliadearaujo (Juliadearaujo) on Thursday, August 26, 2004 - 09:00 am: Edit

OMG! Thats such a bourgeoisie conversation!

"Be preppy or not to be, that is the question?!"

Peace,

Julia

By Fallentear04 (Fallentear04) on Thursday, August 26, 2004 - 02:22 pm: Edit

I'm having trouble deciding if that was a sarcastic (or joking) remark. Help?

By Uniquegu (Uniquegu) on Friday, October 01, 2004 - 12:29 am: Edit

No, they wear mostly Polo and Abercrombie and Guess and Banana. There's an anti-pop collar group on facebook though, so yeah, don't worry about if you're not preppy. Not everyone here is.

By Stanfordnualum (Stanfordnualum) on Saturday, October 02, 2004 - 04:46 am: Edit

Preppy? Well, Abercrombie is no Gucci, Prada, Miu Miu, D&G, and Brooks Brothers. Even Calvin Klein, Diesel, DKNY, Kenneth Cole, and Banana Republic offer much better style. Abercrombie is kinda for those who don't know how to dress yet try to fit in and believe they can become "preppy" by wearing them. While it may be "the style" on college campuses, few people wear Abercrombie in Europe/Japan/Hong Kong/New York/Los Angeles where people tend to know how to dress.

By Taru (Taru) on Saturday, October 02, 2004 - 02:03 pm: Edit

Uh, you just made a lot of generalizations there. And couture like Gucci isn't considered preppy anyhow.

By Stanfordnualum (Stanfordnualum) on Saturday, October 02, 2004 - 03:36 pm: Edit

Just to give you an example--I live in Beverly Hills; I would look CHEAP and like a complete idiot if I show up in clubs and restaurants wearing A&F clothes. I just don't see many people wearing that crap in my neighborhood. A&F projects its preppy image pretty much by images in ads (such as nonexistent corporate rugby team) and overpricing its products. So often when it lacks creativity, it makes up for with lots of skin or coming up with ridiculous "style" like the "wrinkled". You might as well buy stuffs from GAP and treat your friend a nice lunch with the extra savings. Otherwise go with the brands I just mentioned. FCUK is another option. :)

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Monday, October 04, 2004 - 11:44 pm: Edit

could it be that some people wear abercrombie because they actually like the clothing??????
