There is another thread that discusses cell phones, but it sort of died, so I want to summarize the points made in other ones, and i hope others will confirm or dispute my points.

Ok so for CDMA-based services Verizon and Sprint:
-Verizon works fine, inside buildings too (2 people claimed)
-Sprint works fine as well, there is a tower on top of the tech building (one person claimed)

GSM-based Cingular, AT&T, T-mobile:
-one person claimed that cingular didn't work inside the buildings
-one person said AT&T was fine, but the another person said that it was "too bad" he was "stuck" with AT&T

Well, I'm no expert on cell phones and stuff, so if i missed anything feel free to add.

Verizon doesn't work that well or at all in some buildings, from my experience.

There's a chart on one of the pages that rate all the cell phone brands on different parts of the campus. The rating went from a 0 bar- (No service, can't place a call) to 4 bars - (Perfect service). From the looks of it, most of the services generally have about the same ratings (3's and 4's, with a few 2's and 0's) all over campus. According to their phone facts, Nextel was the only provider to get out in every location, Verizon was the provider that got the most zeros for reception, and that Cingular and AT&T share coverage areas and soon will be merging. I noticed that T-Mobile had the most 4's.

Also keep in mind that I think it all depends on the phone you get too. If you cough up a few more bucks instead of taking the free phone, I'm sure your reception will be better.

Hope that helped.

That Freshman edition of the Daily Northwestern is a godsend.
