Hey... I was wondering what my chances were for Berkeley as an out of state student applying to the College of Arts and Letters? (NOT the ultracompetitive eecs).
720math, 750v
3.95 unweighted gpa... dunno about weighted
Main ECs are viola (allstate, camps, section leader etc.), piano, boy scouts (eagle scout), and tennis (2 yrs on varsity).
I have a few little awards... athlete/scholar, amc honor roll etc. nothing really big.
summer activities include music camp, classes at the local university, and an internship at a law firm.
Anyhow, for a more detailed profile... go to http://www.prstats.com/2008/display.php?user=thomasthehunk
So... think I have any chance at Berkeley as an out of state applicant???
Also, I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I heard that if you apply to both UCLA and UC Berkeley, only one will accept you...
Thanks guys!
Thomas

Well you look exactly like I did (maybe a little lower SAT scores & GPA, but otherwise similar overall). I got in, but I'm in-state. However, I did get the Regents' scholarship, which means my stats were overkill for simple acceptance. I'd say you have a good chance based off your numbers.
And I can confirm that bit about only UCB or UCLA accepting you is completely false. I think one odd detail about the two is that sometimes you can be accepted to UCB and not UCLA and vice versa despite applying to both, which doesn't quite make sense (one should be consistently harder to get into, IMO). However, I got into both and I know other people that did as well.
Something I do believe they do is have only one or maybe two schools offer you a Regents' scholarship based off your stats. For example, I got Berkeley's Regents' but not anywhere else (I applied to Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD). My friend got Regents' only from UCLA, another from only UC Davis, but I've heard of very, very few getting such a scholarship from more than one of the UCs (I personally only know one such individual, but he's going to John's Hopkins).

I was accepted on out-of-state with similar stats as you. Don't worry...just do well on your essays and make sure you emphasize your strong points.

Esun: The whole UCB/UCLA thing is really weird... My school had about 2x more students accepted to UCB than UCLA. I was accepted to both. I don't think anybody got UCLA and not UCB.
Btw, I got Regents' at Berkeley and at Davis. Look me up in the "What Are My Chances?" discussion.

Son got accepted at all UC's he applied to (UCB, UCLA,UCSD, UCSB, UCI). He got regents at Berkeley, UCSB and UCI. He is going to Berkeley.

I was one weird case then: UCB but failed to get into UCLA.
Thomas, classes at the local university are very good. I'm pretty confident that you'll have a chance.

bump--is there anything I can do to improve my chances? Would sending in a tape of my viola playing be beneficial?? Thanks in advance! As college decisions loom closer and closer, Berkeley is coming out as a clear first choice.

your best bet is with high scores and an early start on the essays

I was the same as you Remindergto. I got into Berkeley, but not into UCLA.
