yeah,thats awesome, cornellhopeful!
but why is my room the smallest :(
only 195 sq feet!
btw, each bathroom has 3 cubicles, and numerous sinks, rite?
and the there are 3 shower stalls?
i am guessing this from the floor plans 2nd floor

http://housing.georgetown.edu/academic/residences/Harbin/floorplans/harbin2.cfm

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 02:17 pm: Edit

my room is 197 sq ft :) But 195 is still big compared to the other dorms, except New South.

Yeah I guess that's right for the bathrooms. What I don't get is why they separated the bathroom and shower stalls??? It doesn't make sense. Oh well.

By Chicane (Chicane) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 02:23 pm: Edit

yeah, just talked to a friend of mine, hes going to yale, his room is 7 by 11! which makes it 77 sq feet!! thats peanuts!!

By Chicane (Chicane) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 02:28 pm: Edit

btw, why do they have bunk beds? i dont like them!! do any of you have a preference?

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 02:36 pm: Edit

77 sq ft,WOW. I'm not surprised. I stayed at Yale for a summer program 2 years ago, the room was a CLOSET,lol. My whole family(6 people) couldn't even fit in the room properly.

Mine says bunkable beds as well. But does that mean that they're already bunked? It might mean that you CAN bunk them. not too sure. Hopefully it's not already bunked.

By Chicane (Chicane) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 02:50 pm: Edit

i hope they r not bunked! bunkbeds are not nice, i dont wanna have a disagreement with my roomie first thing abt lower or upper bunk!
cornellhopeful, whats your AIM?

By Clipper (Clipper) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 04:06 pm: Edit

Hey, those of you with 195 don't complain. Did you all know that they opened Darnall to freshman? My daughter ended up there - 176 sq ft and regular sized twin beds bc the room is so small. We should get a discounted rate for that plus being on the other side of campus away from the new dining hall!
I just think they should have included Darnall in the residence hall tours so we would know what it looks like. Our tour didn't even take us on the medical side of campus! Very disappointing.

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 04:41 pm: Edit

I stayed in Darnall for the summer college last year. It's not that bad. The room isn't HUGE like New South but it isn't small like the Yale example, lol. There are two entrances. You can go in on the very first floor on street level and walk up stairs, or, to the right of the main entrance, there are stairs that go up to the "real" 1st floor. There are 2 vending machines on the 1st floor, along with the mailboxes. 2 elevators, and stairs. The laundry facilities are on the very last floor(below the main floor and 1st floor). It's kind of confusing. Also, your daughter will need her GOCard to get from the laundry floor back to her room, b/c they don't have stairs that go there, and to operate the elevator from that floor, you have to use your card(i don't understand why).
As for the dorms themselves, they are traditional college style. Two bathrooms on each floor, with about 6 shower stalls. There is a lounge in the center of each floor, with a kitchen(including microwave, stove, oven, sink, and fridge), and a TV(i don't believe it had cable) with a few couches.
Darnall actually isn't that bad. The rooms are good enough. Also, the shuttle stops to Dupont Circle and Rossyln,VA are located right outside Darnall, and the Leavey Center is right there as well. Also, if your daughter wants to go to the Supermarket(Safeway), it's about a 15 minute walk, but it's closer to Darnall than any other dorm. The only thing that might bother her is the fact that the hospital is right there, and you can her the ambulance at night. However she'll most likely get used to it.
Which dorm(s) did you see on your tour Clipper? I'm interested in becoming a tour guide, so i'd just like to get an idea(lol, I was at Georgetown for 5 weeks and I didn't go on a tour!).

New South room 233

I don't know what to expect other than I'm probably not gonna get work done in the room, haha. Oh well, I wasn't planning on being cooped up in my dorm the whole time anyway so it's no biggie.

Anyone know how big the New South rooms are?

By Clipper (Clipper) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 05:09 pm: Edit

Thanks Cornell for the information. I figured when I saw the map location that the hospital would be a problem with noise plus the street is there too. I think they should put all the nursing students in Darnall bc it is close by their classes.

We toured through New South,Harbin and Village C. She was fine with any of those but was shocked to see that Darnall is now a freshman dorm. I think that this is bad bc all of the freshman dorms are on the OTHER side of campus. There would have been more opportunities for her to meet other freshman rather than eating with the kids in Darnell. I tried to convince her that it will be good in the winter when she can just go downstairs to eat rather than having to bundle up and walking outside - see I am "trying" to think positively.
We just feel that they used Darnall as the overflow dorm and that she is an overflow student. It's sort of like those kids on campuses who have to live in a hotel bc they over enrolled.

Since you have been to the room - is there anyplace to put a TV/refridge? How did the students arrange their beds? They do NOT want to bunk but with the room only 10.5 feet wide how can you put 2 beds that total about 7 feet in width so that there is enough room to walk in between? Are the desks on each side of the window? Could you describe the closets and where are they located?
See, she feels ripped off bc she had already envisioned her room if she got the other 3 dorms and now she is going into something unknown. (She is just that type of kid - always planning ahead!).

If you can add anything to the above info that would be great. I am interested in the room layout mostly.
Sorry for the complaints.

By Hoya07 (Hoya07) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 05:24 pm: Edit

living in darnall is not a bad thing....the food at darnall is about 20 time sbetter than at southwest, you have leavy right next door, and reiss...the bookstore is right there and you dnt have to walk as far to yates...the library is just as close as to any other dorm and yeah it kinda sucks that u r away from the other freshmen but its not that far...plus you really interact the most with people in ur dorm so really living in darnall is a pretty nice deal...

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 05:25 pm: Edit

it's ok:) About the dining, well, the Darnall dining hall isn't open for breakfast(that's what I heard, as it was being renovated when I was there), so she'd most likely be eating breakfast in O'Donovan. I heard Darnall has great food anyway.

When you walk into the room, there's a big enough space in the middle to walk. It honestly isn't that cramped. There was enough space to move around. When you walk in, the first thing on both sides will be the closet. The closet is not huge, but not tiny. It has hanging space, as well as 3-4 drawers to put your other clothes. There's also some floor space next to the drawers. The closet has a mirror on the door as well. Next, there are the beds. After that are the desks, which are basically attached to the wall. The desks have shelves as well as 1-2 cabinets(can't remember). She can put the fridge in that cabinet, as it should fit(otherwise on the floor in front of the climate control unit/window). The TV will have to go on the desk, that's how a friend did it. I actually took pictures of the dorm, but i DELETED them! Sorry. So, since everything is on either side, there really isn't enough space to add anything in the middle, but there really isn't anything to add. There is enough space to walk in the middle, the closets are alright, and the fridge should be able to fit in the cabinet about the desk, and the TV can go on the desk with the computer, etc.

Village C, fifth floor...I've never been in the Village C dorms so are they decent? Not too dark, ugly, or gross? lol

By Hoya07 (Hoya07) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 05:26 pm: Edit

oh sorry, yes there is room for a tv and a fridge, and you can either bunk or not bunk, its not that bad...i dont know the layout of the room but its really not that big of a difference between the rooms...

By Hoya07 (Hoya07) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 05:27 pm: Edit

i lived in vc east 6th floor and it rocked, the they are seriously decent compared to new south... u love living in vc when u go visit people in new south and see how gross the hallways are...

By Itziar (Itziar) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 05:36 pm: Edit

Yeah, I heard that New South was a real wreck! I was scared I might wind up in there, haha.

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 05:47 pm: Edit

Hoya07, do you have any info and how to become a tour guide? Also, is it a volunteer or paid job(doesn't really make a difference to me)?

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 05:48 pm: Edit

the only thing I see that's good about New South is that it's basically the closest to the library.

By Clipper (Clipper) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 06:02 pm: Edit

You are great Cornell!!! You sure you just don't want to stay at Georgetown? :)

Thanks for taking the time to explain the set up. I was wondering if the tv could go on top of the fridge in front of the window/AC?

Itziar - Village C was my d's favorite, mine too. There seemed to be lots of room I guess bc the room we saw had their beds bunked. There is a shelf that runs the length of the room at the top of the ceiling - I guess for those on the top bunk. Was a cute little room.

New South was supposed to be renovated so I am sure the shower area has improved. You can always keep YOUR room neat LOL and not worry about the other rooms!

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 06:08 pm: Edit

lol, thanks Clipper:) Honestly, I'd LOVE to stay at Georgetown if they had everything I wanted to study. We'll see though. I'm going into Georgetown not thinking about transferring or what I "can't" do there.

Um, I guess the TV could fit on top of the fridge in front of the window. It would be better especially if both roomies are watching at the same time. Great idea! I might think about doing that as well. Thanks.

woohoo! Harbin, 713. Cantona, party on the 7th floor.... ;)

By Itziar (Itziar) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 09:01 pm: Edit

Good attitude, Cornellhopeful! ;)

I am *so* excited about Village C and all of college now...I can't believe that there's so little time before we arrive! I still have a million things to do....

Also--I have a suspicion that I'm on an all-girl's quiet floor. While I certainly don't plan on hosting parties in my room every night, I don't want to be on a floor where no one is interested in having fun, either. Can anyone reassure me that my situation isn't that bad, lol?

By Clipper (Clipper) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 09:15 pm: Edit

Yeah, my daughter ended up on a quiet floor too (another reason she was mad). From what I heard the floor decides the hours so it isn't set until everyone votes.

By Itziar (Itziar) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 09:50 pm: Edit

Hmm, that sounds okay. I'm all for quiet when I need to study and sleep, but I don't want to be around people who just want to study constantly. My fears are probably unfounded, though. =)

By Imahoya (Imahoya) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 11:25 pm: Edit

Itziar, i'm the complete opposite of you, I'm in New South.

I'm all for fun and games ocassionally, but I don't want to be around drunks that party constantly. My fears are probably unfounded, though. :p

i know its really hard to become a tour guide and i believe its a volunteer thing...

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Friday, August 06, 2004 - 01:09 am: Edit

oh wow. Do you know why it's hard? Is it b/c of memorizing all of the locations, and history, or b/c a lot of peoplel apply? I'll probably call the admissions office or another number to find out, but I'd like to know a little more before I do.

By Chicane (Chicane) on Friday, August 06, 2004 - 03:01 am: Edit

By Hoya_Saxa01 (Hoya_Saxa01) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 09:30 pm: Edit

I just returned from a month-long program at GU and saw the construction, etc. that was going on. If you have any questions you can ask me. This is how I see the ranking of the best freshmen dorms:

1. New South (most of you might be surprised, but it has been completely gutted and renovated so everything is going to be nice and new)
2. Harbin (always a good one - the rooms are a good size)
3. Darnall (where I'll be staying)
4. Village C (the rooms are small and the bathrooms look dirty and old; the halls look like prison wards - I wanted this hall SO badly, but I'm glad I didn't get it after seeing it)

I was actually pretty upset about getting Darnall, but it isn't so bad. There is no breakfast, but I can buy cereal and fruit to make up for that. The lounges have plenty of comfy furniture; the shuttles are right outside the door; Leavey is also conveniently close. I think the social scene is going to be good for Darnall residents because the Henle apartments are next door and many of the freshmen football players are living in Darnall. Hmm... Okay, I'm open to questions.

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 09:42 pm: Edit

don't worry about breakfast at Darnall. You can always go to O'Donovan.

I'm in Harbin, so it doesn't really matter to me,lol, but what exactly did they do to New South? Did they do something to the old dining hall? Basically, what did they do to New South, lol. :)

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 09:44 pm: Edit

and I was one who also wanted Village C VERY badly(although i'm in living well, lol). I guess I wanted it b/c of the outside appearance and private baths.

By Clipper (Clipper) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 08:45 am: Edit

I just got back yesterday from seeing Darnall. I was in the area for a race so I decided to go out of my way to check out my daughter's room. (I hope she doesn't mind me writing this!). Anyway, the guy at the front desk took me to HER room and I got to take measurements of the desk, bed clearance, shelves whatever. I know, I am weird about that sort of thing (maybe she gets it from me).
It is the smallest room of all the dorms and there is NO way you can rearrange the room unless you bunk the beds. Like Cornell told me earlier there is a closet, bed, desk in that order and you cannot change the order. Cornell, I have seen the other rooms and you will be happy in Harbin compared to Darnall.
She is planning on putting the fridge/tv in front of the a/c unit since there is NO wall space anywhere else. There was any cabinet in her desk, she has 3 drawers instead. There is plenty of storage space in the closet and under the bed if you lift the bed. I took lots of pictures so she could see what the room looked like and then she sent them to her roommate.

Hoya that is interesting about the football players being in that dorm!
Not too much longer until everyone is there!

how far r the cafeterias from harbin?
what do they mean by vending machines?
does the computer lab have printers? plus, how many work stations r there?

By Hoya_Saxa01 (Hoya_Saxa01) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 01:00 pm: Edit

Well, construction on New South basically went from 7am-6pm and it's hard to tell exactly what they are doing. BUT, through the windows, rooms looked comletely torn out. We passed by the back of New South (on Prospect Street) and they have some empty rooms (I think they were study rooms, though) looking quite new. And the smell of paint is strong on the street, as well. I guess it's a complete renovation, but it looks more like they are rebuilding the whole inside.

Thanks for the Darnell description. Any chance you could post the pictures for others to see? Thanks.

By Hoya07 (Hoya07) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 04:17 pm: Edit

hey guys, leos is a 2 min walk from harbin, maybe less...each lab probably has around 2-3 printers and about 25 computers. theres 1 lab per building. oh and people refer to harbin as "hotel harbin" because of the way the clusters are made up and the kitchen it has...

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 05:26 pm: Edit

Dan, if you go to www.webshots.com and search for "Harbin Hall", you should get some pics I think.

By Clipper (Clipper) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 05:36 pm: Edit

I wouldn't mind posting the pictures but how do I do that? What is the best method for posting?

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 05:46 pm: Edit

hmm, maybe to post them on your webpage, if you have one. Otherwise, I suggest getting a free account at www.webshots.com. You can post all of your pics there, and it's very easy to do. That's actually how I'll show my friends the campus, my dorm, events, etc.

By Itziar (Itziar) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 05:58 pm: Edit

www.photobucket.com is also fantastic (and free and easy). If you have a Yahoo account, you can also easily create Yahoo photo albums. There's also Sony Imagestation (www.imagestation.com), but I don't like it because I get a ton of junk mail from them.

By Fallentear04 (Fallentear04) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 07:13 pm: Edit

I like photobucket, myself. Very user friendly.

By Clipper (Clipper) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 07:52 pm: Edit

OK, I put them on webshots.com. I could put more but I think you get the idea. It is very slow bc you have to load each picture individually instead of selecting the ones you want. You can do that but there is a fee for the service.

I hope you guys can access alright. I am not sure how but I put them under webshots.com and search Darnall Hall.
Let me know if you can get them.

I put a picture of one side of the room standing in the door, another standing at the window, another of the view from her window, and one of the kitchen/lounge area.

By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 07:59 pm: Edit

hmm, it says that no photos were found...Could you just provide a link instead?

By Clipper (Clipper) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 08:07 pm: Edit

yeah, sorry, I just tried to access it just like you guys would and it didn't work. I figured out that if you search by my name it will work so put in
clipper0073
The only link I have that would take you right to the page everyone would be able to add their own pics and well, you know how some kids are..... so I didn't want to give that link.
Try that and I will keep working on getting a direct link.
Remember I am an old lady and not up on all this computer stuff! :)

yeah it worked, great pics! What floor is your daughter on?(visions of summer college again, lol)

By Clipper (Clipper) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 08:59 pm: Edit

Glad you could get the pictures!!

I would love to tell you guys her name (you know the proud mom and all) but I have told her that I will not reveal anything about her, including her room number.

I frequent these boards to find out college information for a group of kids I work with. I think you can learn a lot of information about different colleges, application preparation, stats of students attending certain colleges etc. I can pass that information along to those kids. I am on this section now of course bc my daughter is going here. I pass on information that I read on here to her like Cornell's and HoyaSaxa's info on the dorm. She isn't on the computer very much bc of work and friends.
