I like how everyone with pretty good SAT's is always planning to take them again. I took them once and settled with my 1350 because I had friends who took it several times and never did any better and increased their highest comp by only 10 points. Anyway... your shot at NU is very very strong. You'd probably be in ED and have a very good shot at RD. Just make sure that your essay rocks the house! Even awesome EC's can't help you if you don't write a good essay, but a stellar essay can take someone on the bubble right into the admitted students pile.

wow, I have the app right here with me.. I guess i'll start working on the essay!
Anyone know how their Biodemedical Engineering prgoram is compared to Duke and Hopkins? Is anyone in it and really enjoying it?
Thanks for your help!

Do i have a shot at Northwestern?
Korean American male, Junior in Georgia in one of the top public schools in my state
4.1 Weighted, 3.83 Unweighted GPA, Rank: 37/512 (plan to be top 5% soon)
SAT: 1430- 780 Math, 650 Verbal, trying hard to raise that verbal
- if English is 2nd language I learned, will colleges be lenient even though I have lived here since I was ten yrs old? Probably not, but just asking.
- Will take SAT IIs in Math IC, IIC, US History, Spanish
(I do not know about writing because of New SAT coming up)
should I take SAT II asap or wait, because I could take Math and Spanish now?
Taking 3 APs (U.S. History and AP Calc AB, BC) & 5 Honors this year; I will take at least 4-5 APs Senior year (Gov, Mic Econ, Stat, Spanish, Physics)
ECs (is this enough or do I need more?):
NHS- President
Habitat for Humanity- Vice President
SGA- Homeroom Rep
Key Club- Board
Beta Club- Secretary
Spanish Club
Spanish Honor Society
Math Team
Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society)
Lacrosse (JV)
Concert Band
Guitar Club
Volunteer:
Habitat for Humanity in Downtown Atlanta (summer)
Scottish Rights Childrens Hospital for 8 wks; worked with kids (summer)
Spend 2 wks in Mexico / 2 wks in Peru for Mission Trip (summer)
Praise leader for church worship band; play guitar & piano well
Teacher for Vacation Bible School for 5 yrs.
*So far I think I have about 500 hrs of volunteer work. Is that enough?*
Awards / Honors:
Honor Band (trumpet)
Concert Band (1st chair)
Student of the Month (responsibility)
World Geography
Spanish
Math Team
Math Honor Society
National Honor Society
Spanish Honor Society
Majors I’m considering are East Asian Studies, History, Geography, Urban Studies, Mathematics, honestly I’m quite not sure. Is that such a bad thing?

All I can give you is USNEWS rankings on undergrad programs:
1) JHU
2) Duke
3) UCSD
4) Case Western
top tens: MIT, UCBerkeley
I dont know where NU is, but I know it's a pretty respected program. I think JHU and Duke have more recognized and respected programs..u can get a job rite after undergrad (not common for bme majors).

Northwestern has many well established internships and ties with engineering firms; I’m sure you can get a job right out of college, if you apply yourself.

Kk19131,
There's a possibility he can get a job. But there's a special issue w/ the major BME. Most other engineering degrees..yes a job should be in your hands. However, BME has a reputation of not bein a terminal major: that you haven't learned enough in undergrad to apply it to the real world yet. You need to go to grad school.
I'm not gettin this info out of my own head..I've gotten it from actual BME majors who have seen the problems w/ doing the major. Basically, if you don't find a job (which is a strong possibility w/ just an undergrad degree) and don't get into grad school..it can be a prob.
JHU and Duke just have very known and respected programs as well as great placement. While there are other strong programs at schools...the placement isn't as high.
Needless to say, the field is great, and I'm sure in the long run you would have a good career. And yes..I'm sure there are quite a few people that found jobs after undergrad..but it's just not common. This is a known thing.

Thanks mosquito!
I was hoping that after undergrad.. i could do part time research and get a job... to help pay for graduate school expenses (i hope to get a phD in the field).. I guess this doesn't always work out for most people as you put it.

You can possibly find an internship during the summer. As well PhD programs at a lot of public school are usually paid for. My bro is doing a PhD program at UCIrvine next year..all expenses paid.
