Just wondering. can an essay make u or break u, figuratively speaking?
i think i will have a strong essay, as the prompt is fairly open.

yes, it is very important. I believe it carries enough weight to push you over or pull you under. Don't take it lightly!
rice prospects-- this is useful info:
According to a man in admissions I spoke with last year, emphasis on personal work ethic, openmindedness, and a sincere desire to learn will go a long way. If you are where you are today due to a lot of parental pressure, I suggest leaving that out of your essay

I agree with pat, rice is definitely different than a state school that looks only at sat scores. If you have a perfect score on everything, but you write an awful essay, you might not get in. But, if you don't have a perfect stepford life and have an excellent essay you have a good chance.
