Coming from the South we have no idea what to buy in the way of apparel. Do students wear wool overcoats? ski parkas? Cordoroy pants or Diesel jeans? Long johns? Thanks for your help.

Yes on the Diesel Jeans...I'd like my class to have some style =)
Long Johns you probably won't need, though I'm only a seasoned vet of PA winters...maybe they'll come in handy in MA, I don't know.
Anyone else?

You WILL need long johns -- trust me. Figure lots of layers. And waterproof boots.

Ski jackets, jeans, boots. Never wore long johns at Williams.

As a style decision, whatever; for warmth, bring 'em.

I'd recommend warm hats, gloves, and a nice winter coat (I've been really happy with my northface jacket). It gets cold in the winters but you only really have to spend as much time outside as you want to. That said, equip yourself planning on spending a fair amount of time outside...you'll probably want to.
Sweat pants are a must for winter study. You seem to be on the right track with everything.
