Who's doing it? any opinions from current students? I'm probably going to, but this seems like it might involve some of the "mandatory fun" we've been told to avoid.

By Binks (Binks) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 02:48 am: Edit

don't do it. save yourselves. i got stuck cleaning bathrooms for 5 hours last year.

also, there might be a "mandatory" dinner out with your orientation group. last year, it was badly planned and over-priced. i suggest make friends early and go have your own dinner night out.

finally, AVOID playfair. you'll thank me later for saving your dignity. and your soul.

lol, i enjoyed reading that piece of advice. but i too would like to know who's doing citydays

By 08beaver (08beaver) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 12:21 am: Edit

so...if you've already signed up, can you just not show up? haha that's terrible. I wouldn''t do that

By Poutingminotaur (Poutingminotaur) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 12:31 am: Edit

i didn't show up to mine. i was put on the "waitlist"... (apparently many of us bright students here at MIT weren't bright enough to figure out city days actually should read sh*tty day)... but anyway, i was pulled off the waitlist the week before orientation and told that i would work at some place for city days. to make a long story short, there was a party (there are always parties during orientation) the night before, and well when i woke up the next morning (or should i say afternoon?), people had already come back from city days and b*tching about it.

By Mitwannabe (Mitwannabe) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 02:50 am: Edit

alrighty, so far citydays is down 2 votes to none. ill give it one or two more poor comments and then i'll probably make my decision .... unless someone who has participated in it could give me a reason otherwise why to do it

How's the "technology" one?

By 08beaver (08beaver) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 12:31 pm: Edit

poutingminotaur, did anyone give you any shi t about not showing up? (by anyone I mean administration)

By Mitwannabe (Mitwannabe) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 02:53 pm: Edit

^^^ lol .... i guess you can't know for sure what you're going to get. under what heading was cleaning bathrooms under, yeesh!

By Goddess32585 (Goddess32585) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 03:58 pm: Edit

yeah, i basically did what poutingminotaur did, except i wasn't on the waitlist and i don't think i was partying...tho i can't remember. may've been hacking instead. ah, orientation...

i woke up and sent a panicked email to my group leader, who was basically like, oh it's ok, don't worry, etc etc, never heard anything about it. the admins could care less. it's sorta a not nice thing to do, if you're the person who shows up and 5 out of your 9 person crew aren't there, but pfft.

and again, *avoid* playfair. it's fuckin awful.

EDIT: interesting, when i'm lazy and type as i speak, i can slip profanity past the mods. excellent *insert evil chuckle*

okay, so do NOT sign up for citydays at all costs? is that the consensus?

By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 11:25 pm: Edit

Aw, just sign up you weakling.

By Gogoinwi (Gogoinwi) on Sunday, July 25, 2004 - 02:31 pm: Edit

it's looking like I'm not gonna sign up now..

By Jarchivist (Jarchivist) on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 01:02 pm: Edit

Opposing viewpoint:

I've heard of many people being happy at CityDays -- not so much with what they do but with the opportunity to meet other students -- not better way to bond then while complaining about picking up trash. Sometimes I wish I'd gone, because so many people I know did. :/

By Sophster (Sophster) on Friday, August 06, 2004 - 09:50 pm: Edit

um...i didn't read this post before I signed up. So What do I do? I'm signed up but now I want to back out...is it still possible?

By Gogoinwi (Gogoinwi) on Saturday, August 07, 2004 - 05:04 pm: Edit

You could do what 2/3 of our sample here on cc did and just not show :) Not like they're gonna kick you out of school for it. But I guess there's a chance you might end up with something decent.
