Hello there.

can all pomona acceptees list their stats pleasee.
this is thr format:

GPA:
SAT1:
SAT2s:
Rank:

i reallly want to go to pomona, but want to know if its worth ED. thanks again.

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 08:40 pm: Edit

I got in last year.

GPA: 4.0 (unweighted)
SAT1: 690M 780V - 1470
SAT2's: 710 Chem (I think - it's been a long time), 750 MathIIC, 700 Writing
Rank: My school stopped ranking my senior year, but I would have been 1/297 but tied with around 12 people.

I'm just one person though. They also look at a lot of other things like your essays, extracurriculars, and interviews, for instance. I personally think that it is easier to get in ED but that's just my guess.

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 10:52 pm: Edit

thanks for responding! come on eveyrone else i know there are more pomona acceptees than this.

Sorry for double posting, but can you rate my chances. im really worried.

GPA: 3.9 UW, 4.6 W
SAT: 750M 720V (1470)
SAT2: 800 writing, 770 math 2c, 730 chem, 730bio
Rank: Top 3 percent at competitive private CA HS.

I will be doing ED 1

Thus far i have one really good essay (or so my counselor told me). (For the common app)

Should i use the pomona app or the common app if im doing ED 1?

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 11:14 pm: Edit

I think you have a very good chance, especially with ED I. I'd use the common app, just in case you get deferred so it will be easier later - the only reason I can see why you would use the Pomona app is to show that you are truly interested in the school, but applying ED already shows that.

Btw, if you use the common app, make sure you use the counselor recommendation supplement they give you - most schools don't have that so I almost forgot to fill that portion out when I was applying.

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 10:08 am: Edit

okay ill remember that. Gnatcire are you attending pomona college currently?

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 02:13 pm: Edit

yep - I'm a rising sophomore.

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 03:23 pm: Edit

any other people with stats

By Congresssenator (Congresssenator) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 04:55 pm: Edit

GPA: 3.86 UW
SAT1: 800M/700V
SAT2s: 800Writing/780MathIIc/770US History
Rank: 12/530

Numbers alone aren't gonna cut it at a place like Pomona. If you want to see more information, there's a link in my profile to a page which gives you much more detail about my candidacy.

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 08:37 pm: Edit

yeah i know numbers arent enough, but i just want to see how i compare to everyone else. Numbers are never enough, or at least rarely are enough for any school. but you have great stats and ecs. no wonder you got into such great schools.

By Xoxo (Xoxo) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 09:48 pm: Edit

congresssenator:
why did you choose Pomona {your #3 on your list) over Amherst {your #2 prstats choice)?

do you guys reccomend that i retake my sats? ive only taken them once, and i really dont want to study if its not necessary for me to get into pomona. Again, ill be applying ED 1 and it is 1470- 750 M 720 V

almost everyone who got in has a better score than me, so many peolpe suggest retaking it. But, i thought since both my scores were over 700 that it might be enough. but what do i know?

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 01:46 am: Edit

I think that you should be fine. Most the people Pomona accepts on collegeconfidential will have higher scores than the average Pomona acceptee. I would suggest applying EDI, and then if you get deferred, signing up for the January SAT to retake it if you think you can do better. A 1470 is a fine score - unless you think you can significantly improve it, I wouldn't worry about it. Heck, I got in with that score for RD.

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 09:37 am: Edit

thanks. Gnatcire what did you talk about in your essays?

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 04:57 pm: Edit

did almost everyone use the common app instead of the pomona app who got in?

By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 09:05 pm: Edit

NCChineseDude or Geoff~

Did Pomona ever release the admission's statistics for the 2008 class?

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 12:04 am: Edit

I wrote one on defending my first resolution in Model UN and another on a canoe trip. But I doubt that's what got me in since I'm not a very good writer. I had really good extracurriculars so I think that helped.

By Geoff848 (Geoff848) on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 03:29 am: Edit

i didnt see them yet online but i havent looked real hard, theyll probably update when the new app comes out

By Cyberpark (Cyberpark) on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 07:40 am: Edit

SAT: 1460 (700V, 760V)
SAT II: 800 IIC, 770 Writing, 760 Chem, 750 World History
GPA: 4.0ish
ECs: okay/decent

I got in, but I'll be attending a school a few blocks away (GO MUDD!)

By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 04:18 pm: Edit

Thanks for checking, Geoff.

I had hoped they would disclose the application/admission numbers in the acceptance letters.

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 10:28 pm: Edit

i called them the other day and they told me that it was like 18 percent accepted. to me that seemed low, but maybe it was right?

would you say that the applicant pool is incredibly competitive?

By Arizonamom (Arizonamom) on Sunday, July 25, 2004 - 12:36 am: Edit

I believe my son's letter said 19% this year.

By Congresssenator (Congresssenator) on Sunday, July 25, 2004 - 02:34 am: Edit

Here's a snippet of the article from The Student Life, found here: http://island.pomona.edu/tsl/tsl2004_04_16.pdf

"Based on preliminary statistics gathered by the Admissions Office, the class of 2008 faced the most competitive admissions process in Pomona’s
history.

Applications to the College reached 4,923 this year, an increase of 385 from last year. Of these applicants, 973 were admitted—an acceptance rate of 19.8%. Both the average SAT verbal and math scores for admitted students rose by 10 points
to 750 and 740, respectively. Associate Dean of Admissions Art Rodriguez said that the higher SAT scores reflect Pomona’s steadily more selective admissions policies and increasing number of applicants. “Part of it is related to student satisfaction,” said Rodriguez. “Students have expressed to perspective students that they have
enjoyed Pomona.”

High school students may also be branching out from traditional schools in the northeast and considering compatible schools on the west coast, as college admissions grows more competitive nationally. Yale University’s undergraduate
admissions rate reached an historical low of 9.9% this year for the class of 2008. Harvard University tagged along at 10.3%. In a sign that Pomona may be becoming better known, Rodriquez said he noticed a general trend this year that there were more applicants from high schools
that before had never had a student apply to Pomona."

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Sunday, July 25, 2004 - 12:24 pm: Edit

wow that is scary. maybe i should retake my SAT1

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Sunday, July 25, 2004 - 02:53 pm: Edit

also, what is "early write?" i noticed it on your profile congresssenator.

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Sunday, July 25, 2004 - 03:45 pm: Edit

The admissions office probably won't have the Class of 2008 class profile until the middle of the year - that's how it was for my class at least. However, during one of the orientation activities, Bruce Poch mentioned a lot of the statistics about our class, including average SAT score, number of valedictorians, etc.

By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Sunday, July 25, 2004 - 07:17 pm: Edit

Thanks for the link, NCCD. Dipping below the 20% admission rate is truly remarkable.

Way to go, Pomona!

By Sagehenchu (Sagehenchu) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 04:16 pm: Edit

SAT: 1570 (800V, 770M)
SAT 2's: 710 French, 740 IIC, 710 Writing, 780 Chemistry, 770 Mobio
GPA: rougly 3.8 weighted --We were on a 100 point scale
Rank: top 10% (That's as much as my school gives out about the top ranking students. About 11/120 people were in the top 10%, holding GPA's in the 94-99 range.)
Rising sophomore at Pomona.
Good luck!

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 05:52 pm: Edit

does pomona take the highest combined SAT, like from two different dates?

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 06:46 pm: Edit

I'm pretty sure they do.

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 08:31 pm: Edit

yup i called and they do. im wondering if theres anything i can do to increase my chances except pray. any suggesstions?

on another note, so ive played the piano for the longest time and i want to submit a recording, but i am also doing research at Upenn right now, and it might get published, so i want to submit that as my science report. will they think im too overzealous by submitting all these extra things?

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 09:27 pm: Edit

No they won't, definately send both! Why give up an opportunity that shows another great accomplishment of yours?

Btw, are you now thinking about retaking the SAT I again?

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 09:58 pm: Edit

yeah i am...1490 is an outrageously high average, and i assume that all the other top LACs are the same.

Maybe if pomona rejects me, a raised SAT score could help to gain admission elsewhere.

Also, i noticed that the people who had scores similiar to mine had like perfect GPAs. Since i obviously dont (due to reasonable circumstances), maybe i need a higher sat? i dont know.

By Geoff848 (Geoff848) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 11:39 pm: Edit

i got a 1520 and was accepted, and a guy with the same GPA and a pretty similar resume who got a 1450 was rejected, so I dont know whether to point to the essays or the score; I think it is important that both are representative of your best possible work. Good luck, it looks like you are extremely committed to pomona, and i think if you try to put that into your app somehow it will help you tremendously

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 01:38 am: Edit

Your GPA is really good - and it's the class rank that really matters. You say you're "Top 3 percent at competitive private CA HS," you can't get much better than that. However, if you're unsure, retake the SAT. That way you won't have any regrets if by the off chance you get rejected EDI.

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 09:46 am: Edit

thanks for the advice
yeah im trying hard to fit in into my essays. Pomona's amittances are sometimes so random that i cant really tell if i have a shot or not. Everyone has such great scores and stats. Must be an incredibly bright class. So congratulations to all of you :)

In my essays im focusing on my intent to go to Pomona, as well as my indian heritage. i also wrote a short paragraph about piano as one of my ecs.

Also, im taking classes at Upenn right now, and im thinking of asking my english teache for a rec. Do you think itll hold any weight?

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 06:49 pm: Edit

Cool, I wrote about music as well for my extracurricular short essay. The letter from your professor at UPenn might, but I don't really know.

Just to let you know, last year they added certain Asians to the Minority Student Action Program. This included Asians born in another country (but then their families immigrated to the US), those who had great need in financial assistance, and I believe those whose heritage came from certain countries, which include South and Southeast Asians. This was caused by a push to include all Asians in the minority program but I guess this was the compromise since the Asian American Resource Center had a report that came out that said these specific groups were underrepresented on Pomona's campus (I am kind of oversimplifying the drama that happened with this, but that's the gist of it). So considering the situation, you might be considered a URM to Pomona, so that could help you as well. It might not necessarily, but take the information as you wish.

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 10:36 pm: Edit

god if only i was a URM to pomona! how can i find out if they consider me one? I know that there arent that many indians at pomona, bc one of my friends goes to cmc and was telling me about it. But i love pomona none the less :)

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 01:39 am: Edit

I doubt the admissions office will tell you straight up that you are a URM, but I wouldn't worry about it - it may or may not effect you. The best thing you can do right now is just not to worry and try to make your essays the best as you can. That's basically the only thing you can control now, (and maybe the SAT's if you decide to retake them).

By Geoff848 (Geoff848) on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 02:00 am: Edit

yeah, just work really hard on your essays. start now so your ideas can naturally work themselves out and have teachers proofread and give their opinions. also, if youve only taken the SAT once, you might as well just take it again

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 09:29 am: Edit

yeah you guys are right. Ive finished one essay...but im not sure if its good. Gnactire or Geoff848 do you mind reading it? (id rahter not post it up, but i can email it to one of you) Thanks :)

By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 12:32 pm: Edit

I wouldn't mind, but I don't know how much help I could give. My e-mail is in my profile.

By Geoff848 (Geoff848) on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 12:38 pm: Edit

sure, email it to the adress in my profile

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 04:23 pm: Edit

thanks :)

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Sunday, August 01, 2004 - 03:11 pm: Edit

hey does anyone know if pomona has impacted majors?--like its harder to get in as a bio major than as a sociology major etc.

Also, do they look down on undecided?

By Helpmelord (Helpmelord) on Wednesday, August 04, 2004 - 07:17 pm: Edit

bump.
