I have posted other ? before but how do your chances increase or decrease by being out of state? Great SAT's both I and II. (all 730 - 800)4.5 weighted GPA. Good EC's and summer camp counselor job. Non Varsity sports...fences but not competively yet. Without writing a litany does he have a chance? He's been looking at service academies so this feels really different...

I think your chances increase a bit being out-of-state - especially if you show interest and visit the school. Looks to me like he has a good chance - but certainly apply ED or ID for best chances at admittance.

My son will be an out-of-state freshman this year. Living in a state in the middle of the country, gaining admission to Rice still seemed very competitive. My son's weighted GPA was similar, but SAT I scores were slightly lower. He loved Rice after a visit and decided to apply ED. During a local college presentation, the Rice adcom representative talked about a very individual and personal approach to applicant evaluation. I believe this was the case with our son and others we know in our area. Encourage your son to really show the adcom who he is in his essays, the box, an interview, and through his recommendations. If scholarships are a factor, you may want to have him apply ID rather than ED, because it seems like many are awarded then to attract strong candidates like your son. Good luck!

I sense that Rice is looking for strong out of state applicants to create a bit more geographic diversity. Agree about applying ED. Just a feeling.
