Your stats seem in range of what Gallatin accepts.

The Gallatin school likes to accept people who will develop an interesting concentration and take advantage of the full resources of NYU. As it is becoming a more reputed school, it is getting more difficult to get into. What will your concentration be?

oh yes im sorry i prob should have mentioned that! --my concentration will most likely be languages, psychology, and writing. ive taken several courses in these areas which hopefully will help .. just out of curiosity, what would you say Gallatin's range is in terms of scores etc., ?

By Jonw222 (Jonw222) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 01:02 am: Edit

Gallatin is really all over the place in terms of scores. I've seen people ranging from 1260 all the way to 1550 attending Gallatin. What they had in common was that they wanted to design a concentration and were excited about Gallatin's offerings. It's a really unique school.

I've had some people from Gallatin attend my classes (I'm a GA in the music department) and there was again a range of students. You're stats are definitely in line with what they like and if you know something about the school, write a good essay, you should stand a pretty good chance. Your SAT score may seem a little unbalanced, but the admissions knows that Gallatin students like to make a specialization and your specialization seems definitely well suited for Gallatin. But like anything in life, it's not an absolute sure thing.

Sorry to steal Iloveny's fire but I'd kinda like to know what about my chances.....any opinions would be appreciated. I'm also applying to Gallatin and I'd like to have a concentration in music, communications, and sociology. I'm kinda all over the place, but thankfully that's what Gallatin embraces. Anyways, here are my stats:

Private all-girls catholic school

PSAT: 205 index -- national merit commended

SAT: 1240 -- I'm gonna retake in october and hope for 1350. I've been practicing and it seems like a reasonable goal.

SAT II: writing-780 lit-700 chem-taking in october hoping for 650

GPA: 3.8 w -- 3.4 uw

ECs: ~Junior Statesmen of America 9-12 secretary 11, president 12
~NHS 11 and 12
~Arts Culture and Theatre Club 9-12 president 12
~WIHA Communications Club 10-12
~International Thespian Society 10-12
~Song and Spirit Liturgy Planner 11 and 12
~Classical vocal training 8-12
~Parish Choir 10-12
~Founding member and arts coordinator of Parish summer camp 9-12
~CCD teacher 11 and 12

All honors all years
Junior year AP English (recieved 4 on test)
Senior year AP chem, AP US history, AP french

I'll also be applying ED. That's it. Be brutally honest...thanks!

Sopranosweety

GPA - 3.4 is a bit low for what NYU usually accepts.

SAT - 1250 seems a little low too. 1350 is definitely a reasonable goal considering that you were a commended student for the PSAT. Remember, you can choose either the SAT I or the SAT II to take in October (I would probably suggest the SAT I to try to get a higher score.)

EC - Seem very good, any leadership positions though.

I've had several people from Gallatin in my classes at NYU (CAS music department) so if you have any questions feel free to ask. It seems like NYU would be a good place for you. Just try to bring up your SAT score.

Jonw: being the president of 2 clubs and teaching CCD doesn't count as leadership? I don't understand what leadership is I guess. Also, I forgot to include that I've been working at a pottery studio for 2 years and I'm an assistant manager. Before that I worked at an animal hospital for 2 years and this summer in addition to my job at the pottery studio I have been babysitting for a girl with ADHD and her sister and its been an interesting and trying experience. I wrote an essay about the experience which I've been thinking about using as an admissions essay.
One other question, what do you think would set a student apart at NYU? Admissions officers are seeing 36000 apps and I want to be different. I was gonna submit a supplimental CD with 2 or 3 songs I've sang on it but I'm not applying to be a vocal preformance major so I don't know if that matters.
Thanks for all your input!

Sopranosweety:

Sorry, I must have missed which means that it probably should be displayed *prominently* on a resume (application it should be fine.) That is very good leadership experience. Again, I'm sorry about missing it.

For Gallatin, I would submit the supplimentary CD. One of the students at Gallatin is actually the daughter of a music composition professor (she sings) and another was a contestant on American Idol.

sopranosweety, despite what jonw says, the admissions office will tell you not to send any cds or such with your app because they are "unable to review supplementary materials".

By Sopranosweety6 (Sopranosweety6) on Tuesday, August 03, 2004 - 05:47 pm: Edit

matth and jw: doesn't gallatin review apps seperately from the other schools so they have a smaller applicant pool and would be able to review suppliments? I mean Gallatin is looking for people with varied interests and wouldn't a supplimental CD help show that? Any more opinions?

By Jonw222 (Jonw222) on Wednesday, August 04, 2004 - 12:23 am: Edit

For certain departments, there are two rounds of review for application. The first is an initial review by the admissions office to decide whether you meet general academic requirements. Then for certain programs in the Steinhardt School of Education and Tisch School of the Arts the departments review a portfolio. For those unable to come in for an audition because of distance, they allow to submit a CD. No one can be admitted to the art, music or drama programs of Tisch or Steinhardt without a review of materials.

But Gallatin is a strange school. The only major is in Individualized Study and that is a liberal arts degree. Because of the cross-disciplinary nature of Gallatin's programs there has been talk of its policy changing with regards to supplimentary materials. However, the application this year says:

"Unless you are applying to one of the programs that specifically requires an audition or portfolio as part of the admissions process, portfolios, videotapes, CD's or other samples of artistic ability are not required for admission and will not be considered for admission."

Since Gallatin does not *require* supplimentary materials, you should not send something they will not review and want.

If you feel you would like professional training in singing, I would recommend looking into the Steinhardt School of Education's music program.

I'm not sure you were directing that at me or not Jon, but I'm aware of Tisch's requirements. I have many friends in Tisch. Also, your description is not entirely accurate as far as the drama program is concerned. It's not an 'initial' review by admissions, then the artistic review. It can be the other way around or simultaneous. Those who apply for E.D. sometimes have their audition prior to their app even being submitted. In any case, it's not a system where you need to pass academic muster PRIOR to auditioning, like it is at other colleges. Everyone who wants an audition, receives one. Just to clear that up for others who may read this.

By Jonw222 (Jonw222) on Wednesday, August 04, 2004 - 02:43 pm: Edit

For the department of music in Steinhardt, the application states:

"Auditions are required for all music programs and educational theater program. Preliminary information on audition procedures and requirements will be mailed to you when your application is received in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. You will be notified in writing if you have been selected for an audition *AFTER* [boldfaced in application] you have submitted all of the necessary credentials and your application is *COMPLETE*. [boldfaced in application]."

From my work in the department, I have found this to mean an academic review by the admissions office and then being directed to the Department of Music and Performing Arts for an audition. For Steinhardt, it very well is an initial review of applications and then an audition. Early Decision these are done concurrently but if the applicant isn't qualified academically, they still won't be accepted, no matter how good the audition is. For regular decision, a student will not be granted an audition and the department will not even know they applied.

Sure, Tisch *grants* all people an audition, but they are unlikely to admit students who are excellent actors or actresses with really low credentials (far below NYU's mean).
