Anybody else unhappy with their dorm assignment? I feel like they purposely gave me the exact opposite of what i wanted. Anyone with a modern want to switch to a traditional? (please purdy please....)

I think most people put modern as a preference...I think those who get them (like me) are just lucky. They're definitely not out to get you or anything, just bad luck. It'll still be a blast, don't worry.

Tobes,
What did you ask for and what did you get??
| By Tobes (Tobes) on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 11:13 pm: Edit |
I asked for, in order: modern double, modern triple, modern single, traditional double, traditional triple, traditional single. So they gave me my 4th choice out of 6. Specifically I asked for University House (now Thomas Eliot house) and they gave me Umrath. Rubelmann and Umrath were my last two choices out of all the dorms. I hate being so bitter about this but it's just one in a series of things in my college experience to go wrong and I havent even gotten to campus yet...

Request to have a dorm switch. Maybe Washu matches students' requests and then fulfills them on a first come first serve basis. Do it ASAP...

Tobes,
Yes, see if you can get on a waitlist for Eliot House. What have you heard about Eliot House- why do you want to be at Eliot???

This is why you want to be at Eliot (University House) or any new dorm for that matter:

I visited the campus and I absolutely hated the traditional dorms. Eliot just happened to look the nicest of the new dorms and have the best location I think. But I would take any new dorm. And I have called the school already. They're filled to capacity so the only ways I can switch are
a)find someone to switch with
b)wait until someone drops out of the school (apparently this happens a lot within the first month.....)
c)switch at the end of the semester
Option a) is the best cuz then I dont have to move in and move out again.

alright just stop complaining and deal. It is not the space but the people. Every other current/former wash u student says traditional dorms are better anyways..more fun and easier to meet people. I'm sure you will love any dorm you're in.

Even if you do get "stuck" with a traditional, I'm sure you'll have an awesome time. As Syders said, the traditional dorms are much more social than the modern ones (at least that's what numerous students have told me).
In fact, I know many people who put traditional as their first choice because of this one reason. I figure, whichever dorm type you go to, you'll have to give a little and take a little. No one dorm has all positives or all negatives, so I do believe that even if you didn't get your first choice, you'll eventually love wherever you go.

I actually hadn't requested a triple room, but I've been talking to my roommates, and I love them. My space may be a bit more cramped than usual, but I think it will be an amazing experience to live with these ladies. No matter what the rooming situation, It will all turn out to be liveable in the end. Besides, if you hate it...it's only one year. However, if you really want to switch something, consider posting on www.livejournal.com/community/wustl08 to see if someone might want to switch.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do or happens in the end!

Syders i'm not trying to complain. I dont want to be bitter about it. And if I cant switch then I'll just accept the situation. Ive been through worse. I'm just trying to see if it's possible to switch that's all---might as well try shouldnt I?

Old and new dorms both have their personal advantages and disadvantages. While newer dorms are nicer inside and have their own bathrooms, older dorms are a little more social due to the communal bathrooms and the open door policy. This summer I am doing a special pre-freshman program at Wash U and staying in Lee, an old dorm. Considering that I preferred new dorms and requested them on my housing sheet, I was upset when I learned that I had to spend the summer in Lee. But to tell you the truth, living in an old dorm was very enjoyable. It's very social and easy to meet people. You'll enjoy it, trust me. And no, Wash U is not out to get you. Out of the program I am currently in, a great deal of people who requested new dorms were put in an old dorm. At least give it a chance before you decide you dont like it. College is about learning how to live in different situations

I know I know. It's just that it's one in a series of things to go really wrong in the past month or so. And I thought the bad luck would end once I got out of high school....
And I'm sure the modern dorms are social enough. At least you dont have to share a bathroom with everybody on the floor. What I really didnt like about the old dorms though was that I felt claustrophobic in them. There were just way too many people in too small an area and there was no open space to breathe.

you guys... get to campus before you freak out! i lived in eliot last year and it was quite possibly the most antisocial living situation in the WORLD.
when you say "it's not the space but the people," that is not necessarily true. when you can't see people's rooms from the hallway, and you have to go through two doors just to say hey to your neighbor, no one does it and you all end up not even talking to each other.
i promise... eliot is not all it is cracked up to be, and the old dorms are way way way better.
