Rice is great as far as class size goes. The average size, as reported by the website, is 11 students. I'm sure some of the intro classes are larger, but they're most likely not going to be anything like those at large state universities.

do ppl normally take 4 classes a semester?

I would say yes, but I think, at Rice, many people are really motivated and want to get as many classes in as possible. Four may be average, but it's certainly not abnormal for people there to be taking five or more classes, from what I've heard.

Schedule sizes tend to vary a lot. I came in a bit too ambitious and took 17 hrs first semester and 20 hrs second semester. I really would advise against this and spend the extra time getting involved in some way or another. Education is first, but fun comes in at a close second
Typical schedules are ~14-17 hours, which amounts to 4-5 classes.
