What are my chances? Feel free to shoot me down, cause I am wide open to your input.
Asian male, from suburban Texas college town. father professor of finance.

stats:
SAT I: 1600
SAT II:
Chem: 800
Writing: 750
Math IIC: 800
Class rank, 1/514
GPA weighted, 4.49, unweighted around 3.8 i would guess.

now is the bad part: ECs are decent but not solid:

*State competitions, placed and part of winning team in current events and social studies

*Concertmaster or second chair of school orchestra

*Awards in orchestra, pretty pointless stack

*Founder of volunteer group, resting homes, local

*Member of local symphony orchestra

*Treasurer of orchestra and sophomore rep (probably wont get elected senior year)

*Stuco leadership committee (not really leadership position but named that...any advice on what is ethical to put?)

*French club, numerous national and state awards (sound great, but national can have like ties between many students)

*Working at university Center for Int'l Business researching.

Some more crap...

more questions...my major is business but i hear that this is highly populated by Indians...my aunt says to put my second favorite major (writing or history or poliscience) but my parents say that might be unethical....need your help....

Essays will be mediocre...ill try hard but am not a great writer.

PS FOR THOSE THAT GOT IN, I NEED STATS....
thank you

Your chances are great, as you are awesome all-around; essays, perhaps, notwithstanding.

However, I don't understand how you can get an 800 verbal and a 750 Writing score and not be at least a decent writer. You obviously have an in-depth understanding of the way the English language works, or you would not have done so well on those tests. My advice to you is to simply be yourself in your essay. I would choose a serious, meaningful, potentially profound topic to write about if you can, and one that reveals the most about who you are as a person.

P.S. The fact that you're from Texas should increase your chances as well, as Rice is app. 50% Texan.

Anyway, here are my stats:

White Male
Alabama
Interim Decision
34 ACT 770Wr./650His./670Lit. SATIIs
99.6... GPA (not sure in terms of 4.0 scale)
rank 4/130
National Merit Scholar
Various club leadership positions
Various comm. service through clubs and college summer program
Some local and statewide/national writing awards, etc.

I also received a merit schol. (Trustee)

Thanks so much for answering my questions...I found out something today.

I got a 750 because I skipped a writing section. If i had not skipped, I would have gotten 770 plus.

I seriously feel horrible...

everything you have, even scorewise, sounds better than what i have, except a few school/state offices. the only other difference is i'm from out of state.

i've always heard it's harder to get in rice from texas. :/ but it really sounds like you should get in, as long as you write a decent essay for the only long essay question.
