By Xanderman (Xanderman) on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 04:11 pm: Edit

I've been wanting to go to NYU since like..the early 1990s, before it became the popular school for thousands of new people to apply to each year (sorry if I sound cyncial).

I'm a White Male from Long Island, New York and a middle-class family. My majors will be PoliSci/Journalism

GPA: 92.432 UW/about a 99 weighted (both will go up in senior year)

Rank: 17/235 (top 7%)

SAT I/II
SAT I: 1320 (650V/670M)--both of those will increase dramatically the next time I take them
Writing: 690
US History: 750
Chemistry: 560 (eek)
World History: 660
Bio E: 640
Math IC: 610 (may retake)
**Will be taking French in November

ECs
Science Olympiad (9, 10, 11, 12)--State Finalist 9, 11
Newspaper (10, 11 [Section Editor], 12 [Editor in Chief])
Images--school literary magazine (12)
Human Awareness Club (11, 12)
Key Club (11, 12)
Drama--Stage Manager fall/spring (10, 11, 12)
National Honor Society--will run for President (11, 12)
Tutoring (11, 12)
Dollars for Scholars (9, 10, 11, 12)
National Student Leadership Conference at American University in D.C. (Summer 2004)

My recommendations are coming from an NYU alumni and an American alumni (which I understand to be NYU's Washington, D.C. affiliate) and will be stellar. I believe that my essay will be quite good as well.

Someone please respond and tell me if I have any chance ED and what I can do to help them :). Thanks!

I just went through the app process this year and will be a freshman at NYU next year. From my recent experiences I'd say that you have a great chance ED and if you don't get into CAS (highly unlikely) I'm sure you'll get into the GSP. Your SATs could be better and your SAT IIs in writing and math are important so you might consider retaking them, your GPA is about the average that gets into NYU (A-/A average), but it is good that it will be boosted by senior year to give you an edge. What I think gives you a great edge are your recommendations, and your ECs are great as well! I think if you do as well on your essay as you think you will (and the essay is big for the NYU admissions committee), you have a great chance of getting in! Good luck and keep up the good work.

I'll be going to CAS in the fall, and I think that you have a shot at getting in. I mean, the scores could be higher, but they're not bad. Definitely consider early decision though.

Just FYI:

alumnus = male singular

alumni = male plural or mixed male and female plural

alumna = female singular

alumnae = female plural

Have to agree with the other postings. Perhaps you should retake the SAT I again in the Fall. Not that your score isn't good but you're applying from Long Island, the worst place to apply to for colleges and being middle class and white doesn't help either. Years ago, it wouldn't be a problem, but unfortunately things have become massively more difficult in recent years.

If you really want to go to NYU and money isn't a factor, I would recommend applying early decision if it's your first choice school.
