I don't really care about this too much.. but I was just wondering out of curiosity why wash u is not more of a well-known, prestigious school if it is so selective?

Wash U is considered one of the "Secret Ivies" because it is NOT a Name school..But, anybody who is involved with higher education KNOWS that Wash U is a top-notch university. After all, it was rated number 9, same as Dartmouth, in the 2004 edition of US News Report-America's Best Colleges. If you can overlook the fact that it does not have instant name recognition (part of its' charm) this college is well worth a visit. Most Wash U students are very happy!!!!

There is nothing charming about that.. sorry

Wash U has been a top-notch school for years before it was ranked #9 in the USNews rankings. I think the reason it doesn't have instant name recognition is because of its location- its not in the competitive northeast or on the trendy west coast.

Well, neither are Northwestern, UNC, Duke, Rice, and Emory and yet, they have either slightly more (Rice and Emory) or significantly more (UNC, Duke, Northwestern) name recognition than Wash U.

Just goes to show that rankings don't mean much.

The truth is, and i didnt mean to be snide with my previous post- WashU is an excellent school. It will have the name recognition of Northwestern, Duke, Johns Hopkins, etc, soon. They are doing great things at WashU and the students are very happy!

I disagree with Theguac. WashU has more name recongnition than UNC and Emory, unless you are from North Carolina or Georgia.

Actually, UNC probably has more recognition b/c its a large very good public school. Also depending on where you live, WashU does have instant ame recognition I live in Northern NJ and a significant number of people know about it

I live in CA and more people know of UNC and Emory than WashU, though the university is quickly increasing its name quality across the country. It's just not on everyone's "Wow" list in CA; in fact, just recently (in the past 10 years), Duke was just added, even though some CA individuals still do not know what it is.

It takes time and I'm sure WashU is an EXCELLENT university but it will need to find a way to promote its name more.
