Being from Idaho might help. You should retake the SAT 1. If you can raise it 100 points and apply ED, have good recs, and write interesting essays you should have a good chance.

You should always apply, and let the admissions office tell you if you can't go. Don't decide you aren't good enough yourself...you have a good chance now, and with a little work can do even better, i bet.
good luck, and hope to see you at rice!

This is just a thought, but since your SAT II tests are all pretty high, you might do well on the ACT, which is more knowledge-based than the SAT I. Rice's mid-range for the ACT fluctuates from year to year, but is typically around 30-34.
It couldn't hurt to take it, and if you don't do too well, you don't have to send your ACT scores.

Your stats were similar to mine and I got accepted to both Rice and Berkeley
. Your SAT IIs are good and I might either retake the SAT or take the ACT to get my score in the 1400 equivalent range (just to be safe - I took my SAT Is 3 times to get a high 1400). I don't know too much about Berkeley, but since I live really close to Rice I can just say that they really DO care about diversity and creativity. For me that worked out fine cause I did well on my "Box" and essay and interview, even though I only applied Regular. Applying early does help, and I know plenty of classmates who had high 1500s yet only got wait-listed. In other words, it really adds to your profile if you've done an internship at some lab or company and have some kind of professional working experience.
