there are other placement exams like chem, math, etc. students should review them. study enough that one could feel like as if he/she could score a 5 on ap exam. in order to receive credit for chem, one has to score a 5 and high enough on the placement exam to get into chem honors. i think the same applies to physics. for math, one has to score 4 or 5 on aps and score reasonably well to get into the class. if one didn't get 5s or 4s, then i guess that person wouldn't have to worry, as he/she would not receive credit anyhow. for foreign language, have a good grasp of whatever is supposed to be studied, but you don't have to go on what the placement exam says. you can enroll in the class anyway. for english, quickly go over writing.

thanks, so even if one gets a 5 on an AP English test they still have to take Pomona's placement test?

Unfortunately, yes. However, if your son got a 5 on the AP, he really won't have to worry about this writing test. You get two chances at passing it before you have to take the writing course.
Also, I think they changed the restrictions for AP Chem credit next year. I think you can get a 4 and a 5 and get credit for it, but if you want to major in something that requires chemistry, you can take accel chem, which is only one semester. The professor that teaches that course has a practice placement exam on his website, and if you study that, you should be fine.
Most placement exams are just recommendations. There are a few exceptions, which include the writing and accelerated chemistry placement tests.
