Since they are separating schools into reputational categories, CC needs to move Stanford, MIT, and Caltech from the top 25 forum to the Ivy League forum. Change the Ivy League forum to Ivy League and Ivy Plus.

By Cynner012 (Cynner012) on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 11:33 pm: Edit

Haha you can't do that.....can you even imagine the debate that would ensue about which schools make the cut and which don't? Does Duke make it? Northwestern? Georgetown? Having it seperated by a national survey's rankings is just about the only way to do it without a big fight, I think.

By Stanfordman99 (Stanfordman99) on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 11:34 pm: Edit

But Stanford, MIT, and Caltech are way above the level of Duke and Northwestern and many of the ivies. Perhaps CC should make a HYPSMC forum.

You can rent movies for free from the library. There is also an X-Box, a PS2, and a Gamecube in the library.

By Psa (Psa) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 09:13 am: Edit

Yes, the media room on the bottom floor has free movies and video games.

Yes, the Media-Microtext Center is the best thing ever. I only go to the library to borrow DVDs now.

By Goofycaramel (Goofycaramel) on Thursday, June 03, 2004 - 06:23 am: Edit

Cool. Do they have animes and mangas? I know that MIT has a Japanese media and culture course or something along that line and their library carries some anime VCDs and mangas. If Stanford has them, I guess I wouldn't need to (illegally) download animes off the net :P

Stanford has palm trees.

By Madelinemay11 (Madelinemay11) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 03:46 pm: Edit

HYPSMC forum would be stupid, since that's just an acronym on this board. The Ivy league is a real league, and not just someone's imagination. Stanford should apply to the Ivy league...maybe they will take it if it fits the bill....however, it would mean dropping the sports scholarships and it would also change the divisions that the players play in. That means that Stanford won't be in the news anymore, and its popularity would drop dramatically...

By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 04:09 pm: Edit

LOL @ Madeline! I don't read the sports section so I only see Stanford in the news for its research or alumni doing stuff.

By 08pride (08pride) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 05:08 pm: Edit

You can't "apply" to the Ivy League. It will never change.

By Theman002 (Theman002) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 09:05 pm: Edit

hey the acc changed, so it can happen. but who the hell cares, the ivy league is one of the crappiest and least respected leagues in all of athletics. :)

one question, I dunno if anyone is really familiar with this material but how generous is Stanford with financial aid. I'm from CT and I want to try applying early to Stanford but I can feel that my parents are worried about the payment and the fact that they'll have to add plane ticket fees to get me there cuz there's no way I'm driving all the way out there. can anyone help me out and tell me if they've got a generous financial aid budget? thanks.

By Goneinfivemin (Goneinfivemin) on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 07:18 pm: Edit

Financial aid was okay, not great, but they did listen when I requested they review my package. My grants didn't go up much, but it was some, and it helped. Plane tickets (2/year) are included in the finanical aid calculation...so you will pay the same as another family with your exact same financial situation that lives in California. (Okay, so maybe not due to different costs of living and what not, but my point is there). In general, I would say financial aid isn't exactly generous, but it's not stingy either. The BIG problem for me is the fact scholarships can only be used to replace self help. I did better than I thought scholarship-wise after May 1 (go toyota!), and now must basically forfeit some of my scholarship money. That hurts. From a financial standpoint, it would have been better to choose my other top college choice, because they let you use scholarships toward EFC. But then I would always be saying "and I could have gone to Stanford..."

By Samueladams (Samueladams) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 12:13 pm: Edit

Stanford was offered a spot in the Ivy League and turned it down because they didn't like the policies (ie. sports and I'm sure some others). So you can always say that to people who ask why you're not going to an ivy league.

By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 01:24 pm: Edit

Stanford gets to mail its RD decisions a few days earlier than the Ivy League. The Ivy League policy really makes it annoying (they can only send mail or any other means on Apr 1). They (Ivy League schools) should all learn to use email.

By Just_Forget_Me (Just_Forget_Me) on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 - 03:14 pm: Edit

Samuel-Are you sure? Stanford athletics + academics are ivy-quality in my opinion, but I couldn't see all the ivies agreeing to fly their crew team/rugby team/etc out to California for league matches. It'd be ridiculously expensive.

And to whoever said the Ivy league had little respect athletically-that's true when it comes to football (where it's only 1-AA). And that's sort of true in baseball and basketball (although Princeton/Penn have been pretty good recently). But outside of those sports, the Ivies are very competitive. Cornell's hockey team (and harvard's too I think) have been very good in recent years. And in sports like crew and lacrosse, the Ivies are awesome.

When did this happen???

By Tri_Fm (Tri_Fm) on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 - 02:52 pm: Edit

Stanford is indeed awesome, but not as awesome as HYPM. It is the least selective of HYPS.

By Efilsiertaeht (Efilsiertaeht) on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 - 03:44 pm: Edit

making it also the least stuckup. unlike people who are at about their 300th "Harvard/HYP >>> Stanford" post.

By Aljenadro (Aljenadro) on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 02:39 am: Edit

Awesomeness, a very subjective term, is not completely related to selectivity. Maybe for a bitter reject like you, but I consider Columbia to be more awesome than the more selective MIT.

A word about the Ivy League -- it's an athletic league of schools in the Northeast, not an academic one. It was proposed in the 1930s and went into effect in 1954 with its current eight schools. Originally it was to have been 10 schools, the current eight plus Annapolis and West Point who opted not to join and are now a part of the Patriot League. If the Ivy League were to expand, the first schools to be added would be Colgate and Georgetown, which is unlikely for Georgetown since it probably would never relinquish its Jesuit standing. Georgetown and Colgate joined with Annapolis and West Point to form the Patriot League in 1986(?) along with Holy Cross and three Pennsylvania schools: Lehigh, Lafayette & Bucknell. If the Ivies were to expand, they'd stay in the area; Colgate is unofficially considered the 9th Ivy since it plays most of its non-Patriot League athletic schedule against the Ivies and because its academic standards are Ivy-caliber, it would probably be the first school approached. But no one's holding a collective breath for that to happen anytime soon.

By Stanfordman99 (Stanfordman99) on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 07:56 pm: Edit

Three years ago, if you were to ask me what the ivy league schools were, I'd answer: Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, and West Point.
