verizon doesn't work, or at least it didn't as of March 2004.

Verizon has worked fine for us in Williamstown for the past year. We've found dead spots outside of town, perhaps due to the terrain, but in town it's been good (which was not the case when we first visited two years ago.)

Most people that I know have Verizon. I'm going to do some research this summer to see what other companies work because I want to get a cell phone and Verizon doesn't cover my home. I'll let you know what I find as I find it.

My S and his girlfriend -- both at Williams -- have Sprint -- without any problems. However, if you go north (i.e.into Vermont) it may be spotty with Sprint. Everyone in my family is on their 'family plan' with shared minutes and free Sprint to Sprint -- a good deal IMO. I had a lone Verizon phone (for my business) and have had nothing but hassles with them. Their family plan (at least in my area) is more than Sprint's.

Do various phone companies attend First Days and try to pitch their sales or should we get a phone for S before we get there? Thanks.

For those of you wondering about cellular service around Williams... My daughter is attending a summer program at Williams and her cell phone (Cingular) is working without a problem - her friend's (AT&T) is not working at all. However, I think the closest Cingular store is over 25 miles from the campus. Hope this is useful information to someone!

That's not bad. You have to drive 60 miles from Williamstown to buy socks and underwear!

i was at Williams a few weeks ago. My AT&T Wireless picked up the Cingular signal and i was able to use the phone without any problems, and I didn't get fined by AT&T. I think this is because Cingular purchased AT&T a while back...perhaps they're "sharing" networks.

Spoke to Cingular today and they said they do not have GSM technology at Williams but the older type called TDMA. If you bring a newer GSM Cingular phone don't expect it to work. I spoke with a rising sophomore at Williams and he recommended Verizon. With all these "problems" of phones working or not, do people really call one another between classes or do they just use their room phone?
