Indian?

By Dallasstar (Dallasstar) on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 11:55 pm: Edit

Just so you have a basis to judge on.... here are my stats and results:

SATI: 800V, 740M,
SATII: 800 physics, 790 math2c, 760 writing, 740 bio

Participated in cross country and rugby, and was varsity-level in both, in a very competitive school.

I was president and/or leading role in several clubs. I had 300+ legitamate community service hours. I have won many academic awards through the university interscholastic league (I don't feel like going through them all right now). My overall high school percentage was 94% with SIXTEEN AP and IB classes (senior year was closer to 98%). I was ranked in the top 2 percent of my class. I even took the time to visit Wash-U and have an interview.

......waitlist......

....and Wash-U wasn't a "backup" school for me the way it is for a lot of people. I really wanted to come to Wash-U :(.

(for anyone that cares, I'm a Pakistani living in the US)

Dallasstar, I agree that you are a great applicant and that your academic credentials meet Wash U standards, however, I wouldnt use your case to try to make people think that they will not have a chance to get into the school. I am Indian, go to a very strong high school in Texas, am graduating in the top 5% of my class, 1300 SAT, lots of leadership positions and extracurriculars in which I actually did things to change the school, strong recommendations and I think pretty cool and creative essays. Obviously, test scores and grades are not the only important thing that WUSTL looks at. And while I am not trying to dismiss Dallasstar as fitting WUSTL, I do want to let those interested in WUSTL know that if you put a strong application together, keep relations with your admissions officer and show interest, you definately have a shot. Good luck on getting in!

Hey Running 124 (and anybody else) - Any suggestions on how to "keep relations with your admissions officer?" What did you do - how did you keep in touch, what specifically did you say, etc.?

Thanx!

Utlimately, I emailed my admissions officer, Mr. Jerome Strickland and just kept him up to date with what I was doing in school. I also had emailed several people in the admissions office and just asked them several questions. There is a fine line between doing enough and being overbearing. I would just suggest an email to discuss your interest in the school and any questions you have about the admissions process. The people in the admissions office have been incredibly kind towards me, whenever I sent an email to one person, like 3 other people would respond. In addition, you can always use the option of calling them and asking them quesitons because they are really nice.

Thanks for that. I agree - a fine line between being diligent and being obnoxious. Plus, I don't want to e-mail for no good purpose - I'm sure they'd see right through that. At this point (I'm a junior), I feel like I don't even know enough to know what I should be asking questions about!

Wash U is the one school that is hard to predict. Make sure they know they are your #1 choice. Kids at our school who got into Stanford, Duke, MIT , Pomona were waitlisted or rejected at Wash U. They did take ED kids from the previous year who did not apply for aid, but some of our candidates had amazing stats. For some reason, I heard(from counseling) they thought our HS was using them as a saftey which was not at all accurate. We also had a new rep this year so that may have been it as well. I just think it is not a given for anyone but good luck!

hey, i had the same "let them know they are your first choice" idea, but how do you let them know? i currently just gave them the spring grades they requested before sending me a decision (kind of like waitlisted) and am now feeling the pressure to let them know how important it is to me. Phonecall? email? how do you let the right people know?

I'm a transfer student, not a freshman app btw (and i'm applying to Liberal Arts, not Engineering or Pre-med)

Hey Singh (Singh) how many schools did you apply to? I saw this same post with the same topic on the University of Wisconsin-Madison board!

By Optimizerdad (Optimizerdad) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 03:31 pm: Edit

About 25, and counting.

Go take a look at his post 'I don't think i have a chance!!!!!!!!! ' on the MIT board - it states how much he loves Chicago, then asks people to rate his chances of getting into MIT.
