I am not positive about this, but I don't think it costs more to double major, necessarily. What might cost you more to double major, however, is if you couldn't get the requirements for both majors in during 4 undergraduate years and had to go an extra semester or so. Needless to say, that would cost you.

Double majoring is just about fulfilling the requirements for the majors you are choosing. From what I know, there is no set policy about it costing more.

Just as advice to you if you're considering (or going to) Rice and double majoring, they really (although unofficially) discourage it, despite the fact that nearly 25% of the students do it. I know this because, during Owl Weekend, I sat in on a forum during which several prominent and well-known professors at the school talked about various subjects. When a student mentioned double-majoring, they all reiterated the fact that graduate schools and businesses truly do not care what your major is. Instead, they care about what CLASSES you take. Adding another major simply makes you take more required classes in a particular field, limiting your options to explore.

One professor, Dennis Huston (one of Rice's most respected and outspoken profs.), was particularly vocal in his anti-double majoring stance. He hated to see kids not explore and find other fields that interested them just because they were locked into particular tracks by multiple majors.

This experience changed my mind about the issue and those of others there as well. Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck.

Some majors, like Engineering, as I learned on Owl Day, make it nearly impossible to double major anyway simply because of all the rigorous credit requirements.

jwtullis, I notice that you are always quite eager to relay advice to nearly everyone else; What makes you qualified to spew such nonsense to these fine soon-to-be students?

Do I know you Jb95687? Where in Alabama are you from?

As far as what makes me qualified (if you're being serious), I'm going to Rice and probably am more familiar with it than most.

I don't think Jwtullis is "spewing BS"... more like "speaking from experience and knowlege about Rice"

I don't think it costs more to take more classes each semester... and thats what double majoring basically means. If it did cost more, I'm sure alot of kids at Rice wouldn't double major (whereas apparently alot do).

Thanks for sticking up for me, Abz1986. It turns out that was my brother who made that message; he was just messing with me.
