I'm a current sophomore and I've been dreaming of attending Tisch to study film. Just tell if I have somewhat of a chance (based upon whatever knowledge you know of NYU, since here in Ky, hardly anyone attends an out of state school)

Current GPA: 3.5 (It should go up by the end of junior year. I had a horrible, depressing freshman year, which had me at a 3.1)

Right now I'm taking your average classes, with the exception of AP Human Geography and some required religion classes. I'm finishing out sophomore year with mainly A's and B's (compared for freshman year, which was A's, B's, C's, and a D)

Next year:
AP Psych
Adv. English III
Adv. Anatomy
Newspaper I (or should I take Broadcast Journalism?)
1/2 Multimedia (wanna be film class)
1/2 CP Public Speaking
Morality
Honors 1 Alg II

I'm also getting a job at a local video/editing place, I want to focus on editing since it's something I've found that I'm very good at. Also plan on taking creative writing to tone out those screenplay skills.
I'm trying to get a job as a production assistant, or at least an assitant of some type this summer.
I was involved in film as a child, so I'm definitely familiar with it.

Also:
Photography Club (hopeful VP for next year)
Technology Leader
Art Club
Volunteer too much at the hospital, plan on working this summer for Habitat for Humanity.

PLAN: 97%-->24
PSAT: 78%

What do you think?

Take as many honors and AP courses as you can. That's what NYU likes to see. Also, I don't see any foreign language listed there. That's something you'll need, preferably at least 3 years, that's what they recommend. Plus four years of all your core subjects. Work hard to bring the gpa up, practice and do well on your SAT's, and start thinking about what you're going to do for your artistic review because that's worth 50% of your app.

I've taken two years of Spanish and there's no way I'll be able to take AP Spanish, so I dropped it for Yearbook I. My family is hispanic, so I'm already well off in terms of comprehending and reading spanish, it's just the speaking it that I lack.

Next summer I plan on going to Columbia College in Chicago's summer program for students interested in film (I can't afford Tischs :( )

Also, does NYU accept the ACT because so far I'm projected to score up to a 31, whereas I have the new SAT to deal with and I know I'll do horribly on.

Whether you're hispanic or not, they still recommend three years of a foreign language. Taking yearbook, multi-media, newspaper, morality and such classes are not going to be looked highly upon, trust me. They want the most rigorous course schedule possible. Right now NYU accepts either SAT's or ACT, but I don't know how that will work when the new SAT is instituted. I'd recommend you to take the SAT's, most NYU applicants do. One other thing, I notice you say you can't afford Tisch's summer program. If this is the case, you may want to reconsider Tisch because it's the most expensive college at NYU and NYU is not good with financial aid. Sad but true.

Thanks. Morality if a required course, I can't get out of it. Multimedia is the only class at my school where I'm going to get any experiance with a camera, video editing, and such.

Thank you for the advice.

Actually...I packed my schedule full of various art and film courses throughout highschool and was accepted. While I did maintain a 90's average with a pretty hard courseload, I really do feel that these classes helped me tremendously for Tisch, especially for putting together my portfolio.

It sounds like your GPA will be high enough to get you through but the portfolio makes up half the admissions process. Explore different mediums and send your best work.
