would amherst or dartmouth be better for the sciences?

Amherst has one of the top physics and chemistry departments in the world. The professors are world class and guess what -- they dont have graduate students around to help them with their research. Guess who that leaves. COMPLETE undergraduate access to world class research and access to grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). I haven't heard anything about the bio dept. but I'm sure its excellent. You also have access to bio resources at 5 -- count em -- 5 -- colleges and universities which is way more than Dartmouth has to offer. Amherst has smarter students and fewer drinking/drug problems than Dartmouth. Smaller...Better Prof's...Tightly-knit community ... etc etc etc... Go to Amherst.

virginia, you don't drink? I don't drink either. You seem to be conscious about drinking problems in campuses.

i drink. just not as excessively as some others. however, i have huge respect and admiration for people who dont drink (dangerous possible consequences outweigh the pleasure, etc.) but i do it occasionally, usually with the goal of getting tipsy as a social lubricant of sorts.

then why are you so worried about drinking problems? i.e. dartmouth, etc.

a drinking problem does not just mean people drink. that is not a drinking problem in my mind. i dont have any strong feelings on the subject, but i just hear that the absolute singular dominance of beer as the mother of all social activity exists moreso at dartmouth than some other schools. i could be wrong and its not like i have strong feelings for/against drinking.
