Random question...does anyone know if Tufts has a pit orchestra? What other type of orchestral ensembles are there besides the TSO?

Tufts has a pit orchestra for every musical they put on. There are at least two for the student run musicals (Torn Ticket II) and sometimes (as in this fall) the drama department directs a musical. All of the pits have students in them and they post for auditions around campus after the shows have been cast. I am not sure about the other orchestra stuff but if you need to know about pits I can probably answer any other questions you have.

and by this fall I mean the fall of 2004

Thanks :). Do non-music majors typically do pit? I've done it throughout all of HS and would love to continue at Tufts, but I plan on only minoring in music, if anything at all....I definitely am going to do TSO though.

Yup, anyone can do it. No activity at Tufts will require you to be a major to do it. Its very cool that way so everyone can do what they love. All you have to do is keep an eye out for the posters about pit auditions in the fall. They need quite a lot of pit in the fall because the department is doing Parade and there is also a student musical at the same time. There are also minors and other things. Of course the show will vary on what they need in a pit but I'm positive this fall should not be a problem as they need a lot.

Thanks :)Have you been in it yourself?

I have actually been on the production staffs and in the shows themselves. I am on the pstaff for the department fall show.

I agree with Sasa (in fact, I probably know him/her). I was at a meeting last night where they detailed the needs for both Parade's pit and the proposed fall musical for Torn Ticket, and both sounded like they definitely had opportunities for people to come in. It's always great to have freshmen get involved :).

Make the callboard in Aidekman your best friend - lots of opportunities get posted there, and I might check with the Music Dept as well, even though you're not majoring in music, it's still a good resource. Hope this helps!

Do any of you current students know the audition requirements for TSO or teh chamber ensembles? What type of pieces will I have to prepare?

I posted this at Live Journal, but I don't know if you have seen this yet. Anyway, I called the music department with the same question (I'm a violinist also). The person I spoke with told me most students play a movement of a concerto, but he also said the Bach Partitas/Sonatas would be fine. I'm guessing the normal stuff will be required as well... scales and sight reading... but it would be great if a current student could comment on this. I also emailed a current student in the orchestra and he said it was a low-stress process.

Does anybody know what the student-run musical will be next year?

By Sasa (Sasa) on Saturday, May 01, 2004 - 11:30 pm: Edit

I believe the student run musical will be "A New Brain" by William Finn. The department will also be doing a musical: "Parade" by Jason Robert Brown.

For orientation you will see selections from "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown"

Thanks Alex :) Yay for violinists
