I was trying to decide between NU and Berkeley also. After visiting Northwestern I totally loved it and decided that it's the place for me! Smaller class sizes, more indiviual attention, proximity to Chicago, cute town of Evanston with all the coffee shops and restaurants! All great qualities.

Can't really help you on that. The two places are pretty different. I would say Berkeley's EE, ME, and CE are definitely better. But if you are looking at Industrial, Chemical, Civil, Env...I don't think the two are very different. NU's material science is one of the very best. NU also has a co-op program to encourage people gain work experience.

NU's econ is very good. School of communication is one of the best. How did you know it's easier to double major at NU? :) That's one of the advantage of the quarter system. NU has an innovative "engineering first" for freshman/sophomore and I unfortunately missed that (too old). So can't tell you how good that is.

Berkeley is a bigger town than Evaston and has a lot of restaurants. Asians are the plurality. It's also more crowded and off-campus housing in Berkeley is almost impossible. U pay $1000/mo for a sh*thole 1-bedroom.
