By Needingofinfo (Needingofinfo) on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 - 05:41 pm: Edit

Hey there ladies and gent's - two quick questions.
1) I am interested in business and law, more as a career than an undergraduate major (as I am felxible but do prefer the humanities to the technical stuff.) What is Rice strong in, in regards to business and law?? (I know, silly question as Rice is a real good school, but just any particulars.)

2) I heard from a Rice Graduate actually, *gasp*, that Rice holds "very little clout outside of Texas." As in graduate schools and job app's. True/False??

3) Ok, I'm sorry, I lied. One more. How are the people there?? I live in Philadelphia, and have visited Penn many many times...but it seems there's a ton of elitism and all that garbage there. Am I right in assuming Rice people aren't cut-throat East Coast style??

Anyone who responds has my sincerest gratitude. Thanks guys (and girls) - James

1. Dunno. Rice doesn't do undergraduate business stuff. I would say that you should choose schools based on how you like them and then choose majors based on how you like them and not choose schools based on how USNews ranks them in certain majors. What I mean is that once you are in a school and considering your major, its not really important how each major is considered to be ranked, its just what you want to do. At least thats how I feel.

2. Hm, I've heard things like that and I think its due to Rice's small size. The football stadium could easily hold every single alumnus, living and dead (the vast majority are still living) with space to spare. I guess there just aren't enough Rice graduates to develop an extra-Texas good-ole-boy network.

Most of the people I talk to have never heard of Rice. However, the ones who have heard of Rice are the ones who I would most want to know about Rice. Also, everybody that has heard of it has had reactions ranging from "Rice is a great school" to "Rice is the awesomest school ever". No negative comments without exception.

3 no cutthroat stuff

1) May I recommend a major in Policy Studies, it combines the law making side of politics and the economic side of the business world.

2) Not true, at least not the part about graduate schools, Rice graduates are admitted into some of the best graduate schools, medical schools and law schools each year.

3) I'm from PA myself (town of 20k), I have not visited yet (I'm going tomorrow), but from what I've heard, Rice students are very academically oriented, but probably not cutt-throat. I doubt that they are very elitist either. It's Rice not Hahvahd.

I think Harvard law accepted 18 rice grads last year, and Yale come too. Grad schools and professional schools know Rice!

People go to Rice because they want to be there. People go to Ivies because they want to be from there.

Rice isn't as elitist as it used to be. Back in the day, students at Rice started the joke of calling the University of Houston "Cougar High." (UH is not a terribly great school, and its mascot is the cougar.) To poke fun at UH students by calling it Cougar High is widespread throughout most of Houston's snobby/rich/smart high school students today. It all started at Rice.

Even though there are those kinds of people still around at Rice, it's generally not like that anymore. Just visit the campus during the school day, and you'll immediately notice the difference in attitude between Rice kids and, say, Harvard kids.
