My daughter, who is a rising senior, loves the Claremont Colleges and is looking to apply to Pomona and Claremont McKenna, two fine schools. She also would like to apply to Scripps as a back-up. I know very little about Scripps and would like to hear more about it.
Do you think you could tell me a little about Scripps? Mainly, I'm questioning whether the student body and education she will receive is of similar quality to Pomona and Claremont McKenna's. What are Scripps' strengths, and how can she expect the school as a whole to be similar/different from Pomona and Claremont McKenna? She would like to be a political science or government major.
Thank you for any information on Scripps you can provide.

Scripps is very gererous with scholarships and financial aid. The college has a Core curriculum which is important for the development of interdisciplinary skills. Classes are taken in any or all of the other Claremont colleges. Scripps college is an all women college yet it remains a part of the Claremont community. All sorts of joint social, academic and athletic events are held. A girl, or woman,(whichever you prefer) that attends Scripps has the benefits of the relaxed atmosphere of the all-women student body, which reaffirms and supports, as well as the diversity and usual college activities Claremont offers. If I wanted to major in art history, biology, or english,(among other majors, I would consider Scripps.

Any more opinions, thoughts about Scripps will be greatly appreciated. My daughter is a potential music (composition) major, and likes the core curriculum, and the fact that she gets the benefit of two music departments (Scripps/Claremont; Pomona). Do Scripps students take many classes over at Pomona? Is it really all that different (she has applied to Pomona as well, and to Williams -- I'm an alum -- Bard (where there is an enormous music composition program), Mount Holyoke, Smith.
And how is the financial aid? (we are thought of as poor, though we don't feel that way.)

My D applied for the J.E. Scripps scholarship and got a letter back "unfortunately....many highly qualified candidates....unable to offer you the scholarship....etc. " Or words to that effect. We thought she had been turned down and we had no further contact with the school until today. She opened the envelope today and she was accepted with a J.E.Scripps scholarship.(?) So what happened? Not complaining, you understand.

I'll be there on the 16th.
Can anyone tell me about the social life at scripps?
By Calimom (Calimom) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 05:31 pm: Edit
Almma, are you planning to stay overnight on the 15th? It might give you a good perspective on the social life. We've visited the campus twice, last October for Prospects Day and last Saturday in the late afternoon. From what we've seen, it is a very quiet, very peaceful school/setting. We've been told parties are usually held on the other campuses, so Scripps stays generally quiet in that regard. I don't feel I've seen enough interaction between Scripps students to comment on other aspects of the social life, but they all do seem to get along well and there are a lot of campus programs to be involved in.
We're going to admit day, aka "Spend A Day In Our Shoes," on the 16th. My daughter will be doing another overnight on the 15th. She never expected the awesome FA package Scripps has offered her, and is now debating about going there vs. UCSB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCB or Amherst.
By Rosiee (Rosiee) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 07:12 pm: Edit
My daughter is wait-listed for Scripps. The letter suggested that we contact the regional admissions officer to give her any updated information that might help Scripps in making a decision. The problem is, the admissions officer is now gone on maternity leave. Any suggestions on what we should do next?
By Almma (Almma) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 10:04 pm: Edit
I am staying overnight in the dorms on the 15th. I felt like that was the best way to get a feel for what it will be like for me if I go there. I also have the advantage of staying with my friend who goes to Claremont Mckenna on the 16th so hopefully that will allow me to see what the social life is really like.
Scripps is my first choice and i'm 95% sure that I will be going there.
By Calimom (Calimom) on Saturday, April 17, 2004 - 03:00 pm: Edit
So how was your experience at Admit Day? Who decided to commit to Scripps?
My daughter is also 94% sure she'll go there. Only concern is if she'll not sure she can be independent enough at Scripps because everyone knows who you are and always have everyone watching out for you. Not that that is a bad thing. But comparing it to UCLA, where she would have to fully exert and improve her independence, could that be a pro or con?
By Bapa (Bapa) on Sunday, April 18, 2004 - 01:23 pm: Edit
My daughter decided on Scripps after spending the night on Thursday and attending the Admit Day on Friday. I was very surprised because she was almost 100% certain she wanted Occidental. I think what finally changed her mind was realizing how many more class choices she would have being part of the 5Cs and also the opportunities she would have to meet more people through the other colleges. I'm thrilled!
By Calimom (Calimom) on Sunday, April 18, 2004 - 05:51 pm: Edit
Hi Bapa, were you also at Admit Day? If you were, I think we briefly talked : > ) (unless there was another girl there with the same choice).
By Bapa (Bapa) on Monday, April 19, 2004 - 02:13 am: Edit
Yes, I was there! Perhaps we did meet. Has your daughter made up her mind yet?
By Calimom (Calimom) on Monday, April 19, 2004 - 01:52 pm: Edit
Hi Bapa, glad to hear your daughter made her final decision, and congratulations to both of you!!
As of this hour, mine is also choosing Scripps. She made that decision yesterday, and will send 'declines' to all the other schools ...except UCLA. She still has a nagging feeling that if she goes to Scripps, she will miss out on the "UC experience" at UCLA.
At UCLA, she would be involved with AAP, which would make that huge school feel smaller. She also feels she would have to be more independent at UCLA, which she sees as a plus, whereas at Scripps, everyone seems to watch out for each other. But at Scripps, she wouldn't have to worry about finding housing later on, and she can pursue a true liberal arts education with great advisers. She plans to study abroad, and of course, Scripps definitely will make that a reality. She's interested in politics and int'l relations. UCLA has a great program and the UCDC campus, but Scripps has the European Union Center on campus.
One concern I have with Scripps is the stats listed on the Princton Review website: the retention rate of 77% and percentage of those who go directly to grad school (30%). By comparison, Mills College retention rate (I used that comp as a CA women's college) is 80%, UCLA's is 97%, and Pomona is 98%. Do you have any idea why Scripps is lowest?
Regarding financial aid, Scripps offered a much more generous package, including grants and scholarships, than UCLA.
Any advice?
By Bapa (Bapa) on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 01:14 am: Edit
Yes, I've seen those stats too. I don't have an answer as to why that is happening. Maybe a current student could shed some light on this. My gut feeling is that many girls just get bored with the all-female environment after a couple of years and decide to transfer to a more vibrant coed environment. Of course, if you look at Wellsley's retention rate it is extremely high, so I don't know why a school like Scripps has this problem. I've looked around a lot online and have read some studies that Scripps has done themselves on this topic. From what I've seen, their administration can't seem to figure out why, either! Scripps does seem to have a problem providing a strong sense of cohesiveness on their campus; i.e., they tend to depend totally on the other Claremont schools to provide the excitement. I personally would love living in such a quiet, beautiful oasis and taking interesting college courses for several years, but of course I'm not an 18-year-old girl! My D, for example, already plans to spend a lot of her "free" time hanging out at CMC, Pomona and Harvey Mudd--where the boys are! I'm quite sure that if she didn't have all the other 5Cs to go to for socializing, she would not choose to attend Scripps.
On the plus side, I will say that Scripps was extremely generous with our fin. aid. I just hope they continue to be generous for the next 4 years! D couldn't have even considered attending a place like Scripps without it. I've heard a lot of complaints from current students about fin. aid, but I'm hoping we'll continue receiving those big, juicy grants in the years to come.
I'd say your D sounds like she's leaning toward UCLA. If you can afford to send her there, perhaps it is a better place for her. She can always transfer to Scripps if she hates UCLA. A big university has amazing resources that a small LAC like Scripps could never offer. If your D is the type that can go for what she wants and fight for things, she could probably survive at UCLA. I know my D would just implode if she had to deal with that many people!
By Calimom (Calimom) on Saturday, April 24, 2004 - 03:42 pm: Edit
Hi Bapa, my daughter has also decided to go to Scripps College!
Regarding the retention rates, the AIICU websites lists it at 89% from frosh - soph with a 74% graduation rate in 4 years and 68% in five. A couple other sources were higher. I called Scripps Admissions office and they said the current frosh - soph rate is 98% with 80% graduating in four years, and said the other data might have been from old figures.
From everything I've read on CC and the net, Scripps is rising in the rankings, provides an excellent education and opportunities, is becoming more and more popular, and thus, more selective.
For the Class of 2008, they received over 1,700 applicants for 215 spots (by comparison, they received 1,378 apps for the previous year).
By Bapa (Bapa) on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 11:53 am: Edit
Hey Calimom, that's great! I hope our daughters get to know each other in the fall. Thanks for your diligence in finding out the latest stats on retention. That makes me feel a lot better about Scripps! They really should notify the people at US News to update their figures because the figures US News uses for Scripps graduation rate really pull them down in the report.
Do you know when we'll hear about housing? I've also read that the admin doesn't try to match girls with the best roommates, even though they have each one fill out a housing preference sheet. Do you know anything about that?
By Zuesviolin (Zuesviolin) on Thursday, May 06, 2004 - 06:49 pm: Edit
I just found out (literally 10 minutes ago!) that I was accepted to Scripps off of the waitlist. The dean of admissions called to tell me. I love Scripps and would be a third generation student there. Now I have to make the decision between Mount Holyoke and Scripps. Besides the obvious differences (size and location), what would you suggest? I would like to major in political science in addition to having a pre-med concentration. Thanks a lot!

Hey Bapa!
I'm Calimom's daughter. I just received a student housing assignment questionnaire in the mail yesterday, did you daughter get it as well? It looks as if the administration does take into consideration some preferences in regards to roommates ... but it also says filling out the questionnaire is not a gaurantee of a specific roommate. Hmmm ... It also says that we should be receiving more info. later in the summer. Anyway, hope all is well.

Zuesviolin, I do not know very much about Mount Holyoke so I can't help you very much. You say that you love Scripps, that's a good indicator... how do you feel about MH? How do you feel about the varying size and locations?

by the way, CONGRATULATIONS! on your acceptance Zuesviolin.

Smartnsweet-
I really like the "smallness" of Scripps within the larger university community. Begin from MN, getting out of the icy cold winters is more than appealing
. I also have family in Van Nuys ( I think that's how you spell it) that I could visit over a long weekend and Thanksgiving. However, Mount Holyoke does have the appeal of a very large women's college, but significantly more isolated than Scripps is. In terms of academics, I believe they are equal in the fields I want to study: political science and/or pre-med. With CMC and Keck Science Center, I believe I could get an equal, if not better, education at Scripps. Even CORE sounds interesting (I know I'll regret that in the fall if I go!). Hmmmm. Sounds like I'm leaning towards Scripps after reading this! Have any advice/opinions for me? Thanks a lot!
By Bapa (Bapa) on Saturday, May 08, 2004 - 01:59 am: Edit
Yes, smartsweet, we sent the housing form in last week, as well as the photo for the view book. Too bad they don't allow girls to choose what dorm they want. I also get the feeling from talking to older students that a lot of first-years have to room 3-to-a-room, which sounds pretty bad. Hope that doesn't happen to all of you girls. Has anyone heard anything about the outdoors orientation? They have something about it on the website, but they don't give the dates or the location.
By Calimom (Calimom) on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 - 12:10 pm: Edit
Hi Zuesviolin, have you made your decision? Smartsweet hasn't been online in a few days, but she sends you a big hey! Scripps would be a great choice, because of everything you said, and more. We researched it for almost a year, and confirmed it really provides a great atmosphere with awesome academics. As a potential third generation student there, I guess you already know that : > )
Bapa, I think the outdoors orientation is the week before move-in. I don't know where I read that; will try to find the source and confirm here. Haven't heard about the 3 to a room situation, but if that happens, they are probably assigned the larger rooms.
By Zuesviolin (Zuesviolin) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 11:24 pm: Edit
Thanks for all of your responses! I have decided on Scripps, after receiving an almost identical financial aid package to Mount Holyoke. I ultimately decided that the academics at Scripps would be more conducive to my learning style (smaller intro, Core, more distribution req.). I also like Scripps' small community within the larger Claremont Consortium. I guess I'll be seeing all of you in August!

Hurray for Zuesviolin!! You've made a great decision!!
Bapa, the SARLO staff said that the outdoor orientation is tentatively scheduled for August 19 - 25th, and will cost around $300 - she emphasized that is just a ballpark estimate with final cost to be determined. They'll be sending info about the confirmed cost and destination with all the other info that should arrive at the end of the month.

- I'm in the Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) at my school
-Took classes at UC Berkeley every summer I've been in high school (got straight A's in them)
-Taking classes at local community college as well
-During budget cuts, I led a letter-writing campaign among the students to protect the teachers and programs that had been put in jeopardy
-Wrote a novel (unpublished) and 2 plays, one of which was performed at UC Berkeley
-I don't know if this will factor in at all in assessing my grades, but my mom has been unemployed for a year, on top of which there was a death in the family, the combination of which made for a stressful junior year to say the least. :-( However, my grades have definitely rebounded, and this semester, I have a weighted 4.0
-I'm a very strong writer and will be able to get good recommendations.
Oh, and my cousin went to Scripps and used to work in admissions there, so she knows everyone on the admissions committee.
If someone could let me know what you think my chances are, that would be great!!

I'm a senior looking at colleges, and Scripps seems to be a good choice for me. If you were accepted to the college, could you please post your stats?
Does Scripps give credit and/or waive prep. classes for AP and/or IB classes?
Whats the difference between ED I and II? Is the second one non-binding?
By Zuesviolin (Zuesviolin) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 12:34 am: Edit
I was accepted regular decision to Scripps.
Stats:
- 3.51 UW GPA (family circumstances 9th/10th, addressed in counselor rec) with significant upward trend, hardest courseload available (5 APs, 2 enriched/honors)
- 29 ACT (33 reading, 32 english, 25 math, 26 science) - correlated very well with my grades...
- Awesome Recs, essay, ECs (lots of leadership, founded a volunteer organization)
- Double Legacy (Mother and Grandmother attended Scripps, Grandfather attended Pomona)
Scripps, I believe, gives elective credit for AP scores of 4 or 5. I'm 95% sure that prep classes cannot be waived - during orientation you take math and language placement tests and an optional accelerated chem one. Writing 50 is required of all students and must be passed with a grade of "C" or higher in order to graduate. Three consectutive semesters of CORE are also required (first three semesters of school).
ED1 and ED2 are essentially the same thing, with different deadlines. Historically, ED2 has been used by students who got rejected or deferred by their first choice school and wish to apply to their second choice, or decide late in the game that said school is their number one choice. Both ED1 and ED2 are binding; thus, you may not apply to a school ED2 if you have already been accepted ED1, and you must withdraw all applications to other schools if accepted ED2 in February.
Hope that helped! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you! I'm retaking the SAT in Oct and hoping to break into the 1300s.
I'll probably be visiting Scripps in early September, when do your classes start?
I was looking at the application and it had a rec. to be filled out by your counselor. I'm a bit concerned because my counselor recently moved, and I have a new one that I've only met once, and very briefly. I'm afraid she won't have time to get to know me enough to fill out the reccomendation properly. I'm wondering if maybe my IB coordinator could fill it out instead...Any tips?
By Zuesviolin (Zuesviolin) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 11:10 pm: Edit
Classes begin August 31st, so I would assume anytime in September you came to visit would be fine.I don't know about the counselor rec issue; I would suggest talking to Scripps about it, ususally they are more than accommodating.

We received the gigantic Scripps pkg yesterday in the mail and thought, "Wow, here it finally is! The housing info and name and contact stuff for D's future roommate!!!" But no...it was only another catalog and some other random stuff.
The wait is killing us!!!!! I'm thinking at this point that Scripps is waiting to send out the housing info until after the tuition payment deadline--just to make sure they know who will be actually attending! This is torture! All my D's friends going to other schools already have their assigned rooms, know who their roommates will be and even have their email accounts set up. Oh well, at my age I should have learned to be more patient!
By Zuesviolin (Zuesviolin) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 06:56 pm: Edit
I got the huge packet too, and I was so excited, but then it was just all the registration information. Still fun, but not what I was waiting for. I keep telling myself that all of the mail we have been receiving will eventually lead to the room info. I have friends going to Swarthmore and Tufts who haven't received their roommate/housing information yet (or emails), and friends going to Columbia University and UW-Madison who have. I guess we'll just have to wait a little bit longer...I'm also waiting on more information about OO. I hope it all comes soon, because we're leaving Aug. 14 for Claremont!

Just found a really cool new website for all claremont students. Looks like they haven't quite finished it yet, but it will certainly come in handy for all of you when they do! Here it is: http://claremontcentral.com/html/index.asp

Haha, more teasers today. Outdoor O information and summer assignments!? Geez, as if packing and preparing to go in the next 2.5 weeks, plus going to Iowa for a week isn't enough. I'm actually quite surprised, as Scripps is SO organized, that they sent the info so late. Well se la vie. I should spend less time on these boards and more with my books!
By Calimom (Calimom) on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 02:19 am: Edit
Yeah, that was nice of them to let you all know about the bit of "light reading" (368 page book +) you need to do for Core. I think my daughter was more freaked out by the "toiletries" section of the Outdoor O packing guide - the line that advises there are no showers or bathrooms at your spot in the Great Outdoors!! She laughed when I said it sounds like a true bonding experience!
Which group did you get Zuesviolin? Smartnsweet chose, and got assigned to, Base Camp.
By Zuesviolin (Zuesviolin) on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 01:05 pm: Edit
I also chose Base Camp answas assigned. Looks like we'll be getting to know each other! I started the book last night and if I weren't so tired, probably would have read more than 10 pages. But is was really interesting, to say the least. I think the author used the word "archaic" about 15 times in 10 pages. Pattern Recognition... Make sure you have enough ink to print out the other assignment. It's about 60-70 pages.
By Calimom (Calimom) on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 02:24 pm: Edit
Smartnsweet has to get over to the book store to get her copy of Pattern Recognition. Thanks for the heads up on the printed assignment, Zues. We are running out of ink - this is a good incentive to replace the too expensive cartridges.
Now if the roommate assignments would just arrive already!

What is all this talk of reading for core? I live in NY and I haven't heard anything yet. Is it in a new mailing?
By Calimom (Calimom) on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 01:40 am: Edit
It's a letter dated July 19 (postmarked July 23, arrived to Bay Area student July 26) from Mark Katz, Convener, Core Curriculum, with two assignments to "jump start" your Core experience. There are two mandatory readings (one literary, one theoretical), and they suggest you take written notes.
The first is William Gibson's Pattern Recognition, a 368 page paperback, last published 2/3/04.
The second is Stuart Hall's essay on representation and power, and it can be accessed on the Electronic Reserves Libraries (ERes) of the Claremont Colleges.
If you don't get your letter soon, let one of know so we can send you the log in info in a private message.

I got the letter today. Thank you so much for offering the info though.
I went out and got the book and it seems pretty interesting. I'm guessing the Core is going to be intense.

Housing info, anyone???
By Calimom (Calimom) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 03:59 am: Edit
Yes, indeedy, Zuesviolin. Smartnsweet received her roommate assignment today. Did you also get yours?
By Zuesviolin (Zuesviolin) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 02:08 pm: Edit
I haven't officially gotten my housing info, but one of my roommates e-mailed me, so I know that I'm living in Frankel. Not entirely thrilled, as I've heard there's a lack of community there, which bothers me. But there's AC. I really hope I'm not living in a converted double. REALLY. Not to sound negative, I'm just not thrilled with what I got, so it seems. Oh well, really I'll only be sleeping there, I guess.

Daughter is in a TRIPLE in KIMBERLY. I'm not too happy about the triple or the fact that she's in the smoking dorm, but (as usual) she's already put a positive spin on the whole situation! She's planning to make lots of friends and have a great time (and ask her roomies not to smoke in the room!). I looked at the layout of the dorm, and it appears that she'll be in a two-room suite for 6 with a connecting bathroom. Oh well, I hope they all get along.
By Zuesviolin (Zuesviolin) on Thursday, August 05, 2004 - 08:07 pm: Edit
That's my situation in Frankel, except that Frankel is non-smoking and has AC (I don't know if Kimberly does). However, from what I've heard, the smoking is not bad, if that's any help to you. She's welcome to come hang out in my triple in Frankel if she ever wants to get away from the smoke in Kimberly. Kimberly is RIGHT next to the pool, which is really nice. I guess housing wasn't overly nice to us first-years this year...

Thanks, zuesviolin. She'll be in base camp at the OO, too, so I'm sure you'll run into each other. She spoke to one of her new roomies on the phone last night and is waiting to hear from the second one. Have you made contact with any of yours?
By Zuesviolin (Zuesviolin) on Friday, August 06, 2004 - 12:19 pm: Edit
I haven't been able to contact any of my roomies yet, as I'm visiting relatives in Iowa and don't have my cell phone with me. I hope to tonight, though, as my mom is coming down to pick me up and will be bringing my phone. I hope I'll get to meet your D at OO! Did she get along with her roommmate?
By Calimom (Calimom) on Friday, August 06, 2004 - 02:25 pm: Edit
Hi Zuesviolin, my daughter will also be in a triple in Frankel. Hopefully, the Class of 2008 will reinvigorate the feeling of community within the hall!
Hi Bapa, where did you go to find a layout of your daughter's dorm? I searched the Scripps Housing and Residential Life pages (http://www.scrippscol.edu/~dept/student/dean/ResLife/housing.htm), but it seems that none of the links are currently valid.
By Bapa (Bapa) on Friday, August 06, 2004 - 02:53 pm: Edit
This was an old link I picked up from LiveJournal that someone posted. Hope the link works for you. If not, just go to LiveJournal.com and search for Scripps under interests. They have their own community there. You'll find lots of helpful info from Scrippsies!

Zuesviolin--yes, they seemed to hit it off pretty well, but they are two very different types of people I think. But I'm hoping it will work out for everyone. People keep telling her not to worry about anything because very different people can still live together in a dorm room and be friendly. But as I said, she's not really worried. I guess I'm the one that worries about everything--too much! My D is probably much more of a "partier" than her new roomies, but I'm sure she'll find other kindred spirits to hang out with. And I'm thinking that her having 2 rather serious-type roomies will force her to work a bit harder.

Calimom- what room in Frankel is your D? I'm in 308 and share a bathroom with 306. If you direct your D to the LiveJournal site, there's another girl that's living in Frankel-306. She's also going on Outdoor O as a base camper. It's going to be a fun and exciting year! (Yes, and scary too)
By Calimom (Calimom) on Saturday, August 07, 2004 - 06:46 pm: Edit
Hi Zuesviolin, I'm not too comfortable posting her room number here, so I'll send you an e-mail from daughter's address : > )
I understand the "scary" part - I feel it as the parent, also - but the entire experience should be really great and fun for you gals!
Hi Bapa, thank you so much for the "good" link you provided. The link I first used was listed in the binder the school sent last month. The one you gave me allowed us to check out the Frankel floor plan. Will you be at the 8/26 orientation with your daughter?
I'm going to have to check out this LiveJournal link you both have mentioned!
Take care!

Hi, Calimom. Good to hear from you again. Yes, I'll be there on the 26th, and I'll also be there to drop of D for the OO on the 19th. Maybe we'll see each other then. Has your D spoken to her roomies yet?
btw, one of the leaders of the OO is on the LiveJournal site and she said that they have actual toilets of some sort at the base camp. Yippee!! My D was happy to hear that.
By Calimom (Calimom) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 04:21 pm: Edit
Oh hallelujah for a loo! My daughter will also be thrilled
.
D has exchanged e-mails with one roomie, who has spoken with the second roomie by phone. I feel pretty good about the assignment.
Hopefully we'll meet on the 19th and/or the 26th!

I visited Scripps yesterday! It looks like such a nice school; beautiful campus. The Claremont area seemed peaceful and safe with really nice weather. Hailing from the desert, I don't think I'd even need a fan....
During the tour, we even ran into one of science profs. He was so nice and talked to us for over twenty minutes (mostly about colleges in general rather than just Scripps, but it was helpful information). I like the small classroom sizes, and the accessibility to profs.
I'm planning on doing an overnight stay this fall with an interview. Wish me luck in admissions!
By Leftyleftist (Leftyleftist) on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 - 12:39 am: Edit
How much does it help in admissions to have relatives who have attended Claremont colleges? One of my cousins went to Scripps and another went to Harvey Mudd...
Also, does Scripps look at all at major when making admissions decisions? I'm looking at majoring in Classics, which I'm guessing is fairly uncommon, and I wasn't sure if that would work to my advantage if it ends up being a borderline scenario in terms of whether or not I'd be accepted.
By Bapa (Bapa) on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 11:24 pm: Edit
My guess would be that cousins having attended probably doesn't help much. Probably only parent and/or grandparents would mean anything to an adcom.
At Scripps, or any small liberal arts college, I don't think the major is important to admissions. My D put down linguistics as her interest, and Scripps doesn't even have that as a major. I think the only schools that might care about what you choose as a major are the big universities that have "impacted" majors--majors that are so popular that schools have to hold down the number of applicants in that subject. I'm thinking about things like business administration and film at USC--that type of thing. Hope that helps!

Scripps has a lovely new website, everybody! Check it out. It is a huge improvement over the old one!! www.scrippscol.edu.
