hey Nick13

i don't know where you're from but i live about
45 min north of rice (a.k.a. the suburbs of houston). i know honestly very little about the architecture school and how that functions. but, i'll tell you what i know about the campus life in general. rice is a small school but that's definitely a plus. first, you'll have small classes where you'll get more attention from the profs (1:maybe 5-25max per class). but, if ur worried about diversity, that's no problem from everyone i know that goes there (and i know soooo many people just from my school and the schools in my district alone). as for rice outside of tx, i'll tell you this. of course it's not an ivy but it's often considered the best school in the southern US. and if money is anything of a concern, rice is possibly the best deal out of any private school in the entire country. few students incur a debt of more than 20,000 when they're out. anyways, just click my name to get my e-mail if ur interested in talking in more detail.

What other schools are you looking at?

By Nick13 (Nick13) on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 11:29 pm: Edit

I am in Cornell,Rice,UVA,WUST, and Notre Dame. I have a full ride at WUST and 10k a yr at Rice. But at Rice, you spend a extra yr at a internship and then go back for your 5th yr.

Go to Rice, it'll be fun :)

Actually I have no clue on the strength of each school's archetecture's programs... I'm sorry

I'm also looking at Rice for arch, right now I'd say its number 1 on my list. I never thought I'd ever end up going to school in Texas, but Rice seems like just what I'm looking for.

I'd also like to know a little more about the strength of the arch program too. If anyone could throw out some information that would be great.

I found this link to the 2003 ranking of architecture schools by the Almanac of Architecture & Design:

http://www.arch.ksu.edu/info/news/ARCH%20School%20Ranking%20for%20PR.PDF

It shows Rice as tied for #10 with Auburn, Columbia, & Univ. of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign.

Heres another architecture school ranking thing. It puts Rice at 19, which is in my opinion still pretty high. I'm leaning towards Rice because I think I could get a good education at any of these schools, but I like the smaller environment at Rice.

"few students incur a debt of more than 20,000 when they're out."

Haha looks like I'm gonna be one of the few

Rice Arch. students How do you like going to school 4 yrs. and then working a yr. and then having to come back to school another yr?

By Kjofkw (Kjofkw) on Sunday, April 18, 2004 - 01:09 am: Edit

I know a Rice Architecture grad from the 5 year program, so I asked. His response was that he thought he benefited a lot from the experience. He came back after his internship w/ a renewed excitement. The last year of studio work is shared with graduate students, so he felt more like he was in graduate school.

Rice is actually racked much higher that that..it is #4 for undergraduate in the nation...right under Cornell, the University of Cincinnati and one other one...i forget though.

Hey, I'm going to the architecture school at Rice, and I was looking at other larger institutions for architecture and decided on Rice because I think the small atmosphere for the program is really great. At other schools the studios were huge with like a hundred kids and two teachers, not fun, at Rice I think you can get the attention you want, and plus its a great program!
