My daughter is seriously considering this school (1 of 2). Asheville has rolling admissions and she was accepted in December, although she had her music audition this Saturday (and she was accepted for the Music Tech program then). Are you out of state? If so, I'll bet that they're waiting to see how many final deposits they get from out of state students: they have only 80 slots (18% of total student body), and as of the end of March they had 66 deposits. However, some of those will fall by the wayside, since we were told that in order to guarantee one of those 80 slots my daughter really needed to send in her deposit, which is refundable up to May 1st. This she did. So I'm willing to believe that at least some of those acceptances will turn into declines, as her's might. When did you apply?

i met their march 12 deadline...im out of state...been accepted at nc state, penn state, etc....waitlist at UVA...cant believe i might get turned down at unc asheville....have you been to the campus? Whats it like?

Yes, we've been to the campus (twice). It's a compact, very attractive campus built on the top of a hill. The facilities seem quite good, and they're currently finishing up a new student center. Dorm room are average size. Asheville is a very nice small city with lots of music and arts stuff.
Unfortunately, a deadline means nothing when it comes to out of state students. Yes, they'll take your application, but if they've already received acceptances from 80 students they will not offer you a place, no matter how stellar you are. In theory, according to the admissions director I spoke too, it is actually possible to receive an acceptance but get put on a wait list because they don't expect every student to send in their deposit. If 80 students send in their deposits before you do, you have to wait until someone rescinds their acceptance. I personally felt this policy was very unclear - in fact I wasn't aware of it until I had the conversation I referred to above. This information should be in their admission packet, but it isn't. If you're out of state there is no way you would know this stuff, but apparently you're supposed to. I was unimpressed with the quality and knowledge of one or two of the admissions staff. The point is they're absolutely unable to go past those 80 students, so you may well not be accepted. I would strongly recommend you call them, just to make sure that your application is in order. Please note that Asheville has a completely different flavor to somewhere like Penn State: DD's boyfriend goes there, and there is NO WAY she would consider going there, but is seriously considering Asheville.

how do you know they have 66 students confirmed for next year out of state?...how is unc asheville, can you describe the feel of the campus?
| By Jenniferpa (Jenniferpa) on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 08:24 pm: Edit |
The admissions director told me (this was on March 26th). Actually, it was 65, but DD's deposit made it 66! The thing is, as I said above, these deposits are refundable until May 1st, so it's likely that some people would have given a deposit just to secure a place, as DD did, so that they could keep their options open. Feel of the campus- liberal student body, reasonably friendly (at least not particularly spooked by adults), interesting professors (at least the ones I met, although I think they trot out the most personable ones for prospective students). Students seem to communicate by chalking messages and notices on the sidewalk round the central quad. DD would go, I think, but she's not too delighted by the distance (9 hours by car) and she's not certain that the music program is as good as she wants. The tour guide we had was a transfer from UNC Chapel Hill, in part because he was fed up with classes of 400 + students, plus being taught by TA's. It's a small campus though, which means you don't have as many opportunities to find compatible personalities. It seems a fairly "arty" school, and the city is very "arty" so DD felt at home, at least in the city. You really need to visit if you're interested.

thats ridiculous, they never told me about this...i thought if i met march 12 deadline, i would have full consideration...oh well, theyre loss

No they didn't tell us either. I was really quite outspoken about the whole thing. They seemed quite suprised that we didn't know, but I don't think you would know if you were out of state.

That's good, Whitreturnsagai. DD appears to be convincing herself that Asheville is the right choice for her, despite parental perceived drawbacks! Whatever she decides will be fine, it's just so difficult to get to from here (western PA). I would appreciate it if you could post your perceptions here, when you've visited.

good school...i liked a lot of things...res halls, rec centers, dining hall and new student center,...less impressed with others...academic buildings (ugly), my dept, little name recognition...definitely considering as 2 year option but not all 4

Just starting to consider this school for next fall, but not sure how a LAC would differ from a "normal" state u. Not sure what I want to major in yet. Anybody have any insight about benefits/drawbacks to graduating from a small-ish LAC?
