How prevelent is the Jewish community at Washington University? What is the percentage of Jewish students at the university?
| By Kingdvl (Kingdvl) on Sunday, April 04, 2004 - 11:03 pm: Edit |
I heard it's just over 35 percent Jewish, and theres a big jewish community. That's part of the reason im going to go there next year.

"35% seems like a lot"
What is your problem? Sounds like you've got one.

I am a freshman here at washu and it is very jewish!

jewish in a stereotypically obnoxious way, as emory is known to be, where you can't leave home without your prada bag, or jewish in a cool there's a lot of jews here way?
| By Mafmaf22 (Mafmaf22) on Saturday, April 17, 2004 - 04:07 pm: Edit |
in the "cool way" as there is literally 26% of the people on campus are jewish. actually it didn't seem very "Jappy" when i did a three day weekend there.

Here's a website that tells you everything you need to know http://hillel.org/hillel/Hillel_Schools_New.nsf/44257994e40bf4e7852567ec00500a7d/14698d852fe17e4c85256de4006c38b7?OpenDocument
26% is the correct number. I get the impression that there is an active community if that is what you're looking for but not so much so that it overwhelms others who are not jewish.

how's wash u's hillel?

when i went to the admit weekend thing in april, my host was actually the president elect of the jsu. my impression (as a "conservaform" jew): if you want a strong jewish community (i.e. lets go daven...)it's there for you. if you want to attend a couple services every now and then, it's there for you. if you want to just know that you're not the only jew on campus, it's there for you too. nobody seemed "jappy," just proud of who they are.

I live right by WASHU and I can tell you that they do have a lot of Jewish people. The neighborhoods that WASHU is located in, University City/ST.Louis city, Clayton, have a high Jewish population. A lot of the kids @ my high school are Jewish.

Ridiculous

Whoami-
If the "35% seems like a lot" would keep Nick from going there, I think it's a problem and not so "ridiculous." Depends in what context he meant that. Unfortunately he never came back again to explain it to us.

Shalom, I am the Chabad campus rabbi at WashU, and the truth is that there are no absolute numbers on the Jewish population here, as the university doesn't tabulate religion. Hence there are differing estimates on the size of the community. What is accurate is that there is a strong, diverse, welcoming Jewish community on campus. For more, feel free to visit http://www.chabadoncampus.org

Hmmm.. 26%..
I am considering applying to Wash U. I live in Miami so the whole Jewish concentration thing won't be such a shock to my system..

I'm a VERY proud Jew and I really didn't take offence to the "35% sounds like a lot" comment. However, APChemrejects was pushing it =p
