So what would it be like to be a liberal not especially religious or a memeber of a mainstream (not born again) church on the Rice campus. Not just are you accepted but are you in a majority or do most people belong to Campus Crusade for Christ.

Hmmm, I'm moderately liberal and somewhat agnostic...
I guess we'll find out ;)

Every time I've visited Rice, I got the impression that it was like any other LAC with high concentrations of smart people: liberal and doesn't have much to do with religion. BUT, you would probably appreciate a better source, so I asked my friend who's currently a comparative literature grad student there right now. This is her answer:
Well, there are some conservatives, hence the visit of Dick Cheney, but some of the most liberal people in Houston are at Rice. Generally, i'd say Rice is liberal. Liberal enough that gay people feel comfortable to be out and sometimes flaming, and they have various naked/sex related things with undergrads, but that's just kind of standard undergradness.
No religious atmosphere that I know of, but I may not see it. I don't notice anything too "in your face." If there is anything, probably Christian. But there are so many foreign students that the campus is more about being "multicultural" than religious. Let me put it this way: I hate most of Texas and Houston. But Rice is the one place i can stand to be because it is liberal enough for me, and I'm pretty liberal.

Rice is largely a school of scientists--no visible signs of influence from the religious right. There is a significant amount of student involvement in community service, some on an international scale, but not much political grandstanding.

Wow, such a liberal crowd here! Though you will find plenty of posters on campus for religious and political organizations, the school itself takes a very neutral stance. I'm talking no easter holiday, we (the school) call it "winter break" and don't acknowledge Christmas neutral. And yes, the school is pretty liberal, though probably more moderate than most universities.
