Hey! I thought I'd make a thread for anyone accepted
into the NU School of Comm. for 2008. To get to know
one-another a little, or just to ask questions. Or,
whatever, really. I'm not sure how many of those in
this school will use collegeconfidential, but I'm
rather curious about my fellow acceptees, and since
I'm trying to decide among several schools it might be
nice to discuss NU with other people who would be in
the same school with me. Hopefully someone will decide
to respond!

Howdy,

I WILL be at Northwestern's School of Communication next year. I got accepted early in December. I am extremely excited about going as it is one of if not the best communication schools in the country. What major are you interesting in studying? I will either be in Comm. Studies or Radio/TV/Film...I havn't decided yet. Maybe I'll double major (I don't even know if that's an option). Let's talk!

By Mmmmcereal (Mmmmcereal) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 06:40 pm: Edit

Hey everybody, let's talk indeed... I'm actually in the same spot as Artemisnight, trying to decide...

I've pretty much been fixated with the idea of majoring in film since the age of 10, so i'm going to be a Radio/TV/Film major (nice to read you are too Largegreenturt. I was divided between applying to Northwestern or applying to USC, which too has a fantastic school. However I didn't have a portfolio to send to USC, so applied to Northwestern instead...and I'm all for it.

I was thinking about double majoring. Is that allowed in Northwestern? Where I'm studying one thing at Weinberg and studying another at the school of communications? Or would that be me asking for road kill far too much?

Yeah I've got tons of these thoughts going through my head. I won't occupy too much space with my blabbing, but it's good to hear from some of the prospective students at the school of communications.

G'day :)

PS A teacher of mine said that I should go study something else first, just get involved in film/broadcast journalism and whatever the heck it is that I like, and then go for it in grad school, because more than likely you have more of a variety and are more well-rounded than someone who's focused on film or communications. Furthermore, I'm from So. Cal...aka home of Hollywood, I always figured that if I went somewhere near, like UCLA, I'd be more likely to get a job, as opposed to Chicago, which I don't think does too much filming. But god....Northwestern is just so great, I couldn't give it up. Yeah. Blabbing again. Pardon moi.

What's up everyone? I am going to attend NU this Fall as a freshman in its School of Communications. I was also accepted into Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Communications, which also has a stellar reputation. I was browsing through the available freshman dorms for next year, Hinman House, 600 Lincoln Residence Hall, and Elder Hall, and canno decide which I would like to stay in. I am thinking maybe that Elder Hall would best suit me..but I'm not sure yet. Anyone else have any plans for housing next year? BTW- thanks for starting this thread, artemisnight...I didn't think that I would be able to communicate with others in my position until this Fall. Also, any big sports fans out there?

By Flakcatcher (Flakcatcher) on Sunday, April 04, 2004 - 04:34 pm: Edit

You are allowed to double major at NU, but some schools discourage it. I don't know if I'd recommend it. The good thing about going to a large liberal arts university is that you can dabble in a few other areas/disciplines and decide later. RTVF at NU is an excellent program. I took several RTVF classes as a journalism student (Medill) and was impressed with the faculty and enjoyed the classes.

And, Ohbilly, I'd recommend 1835 Hinman of those three.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 01:56 pm: Edit

I'm glad people responded! I feel the same way as you, Ohbilly! I was worried I wouldn't get to talk to anyone. In terms of double-majoring, I spoke to someone at NU in the School of Communications and she said it was encouraged. I don't think it's impossible to any extent, but it would mean more work. And Largegreenturt, I'm planning on doing Comm. Studies. I looked at the master's requirements and it seems they encourage a concentration in another field anyway, so I don't think doing a double major would be a problem. And yes, let's all talk! I think mutual support at this time is really helpful...Thanks again, all of you, for responding!

bump!

By Mmmmcereal (Mmmmcereal) on Wednesday, April 07, 2004 - 08:35 pm: Edit

Thanks for all the responses to my questions guys! :) I know some of you guys have the dorms your interested in already, what about the rest of you?

I think that I'm pretty settled on the idea of residing at one of the Residential Colleges instead of the Residential Dorms. I think for now, it's between the International Studies Res. College, Performing Arts Res. College, and of course, the Communications Res. College.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 12:12 pm: Edit

I don't really know anything about the dorms, unfortunately. But hey, maybe you guys can give me your opinions? Hopefully I'll figure that out before too long. I *think* Residential College dorms are probably better, Mmmmcereal. But at the moment I'm not really knowledgeable about NU housing. I guess I'll have to talk to a current student or something. I assume dorm stuff is done on a first-come first-serve basis, so I guess I'd better figure it out soon!

By Mmmmcereal (Mmmmcereal) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 10:17 pm: Edit

Artemisnight,I found this article nice and informative, and a bit funny :)...hopefully this will help you out with the journey of figuring out which dorm you'd like to stay in:

Thanks! Oh that was hilarious! I think I'm definitely going for one of the Residential College dorms then! Mmmmcereal that was priceless info.

By Sanza04 (Sanza04) on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 - 06:27 am: Edit

Hey everyone!
I was admitted to the School of Communications and I will either be studying film/radio/tv or communications studies. That is, if I could make a decision...what's everyone's opinion? Northwestern .. or NYU? I'd appreciate any feedback!

By Stanfordnualum (Stanfordnualum) on Saturday, April 17, 2004 - 01:20 am: Edit

Sanza04: Does NYU have both programs? NU has both of them and journalism.

Mmmmcereal (Mmmmcereal): In general, I think NU's quarter system allows you take more classes per year and the academic schedule is more flexible (for example, some classes can be offered in 2 out of 3 quarters in one year whereas in semester system, they may be offered only once). You can also do 2 internships (one in summer quarter) in one year and still don't feel like it's a huge detour. You just have more options to play with the schedule. I was double majoring in chemE/envE and still finished in 4 years and 1 quarter. I didn't have any AP though. So I could have easily finish both in 4 years had I got some AP under the belt. I came from Hong Kong and seems like everyone from my hometown was double majoring at NU (as if it's a hip thing to do). One girl got econ/comp sci degrees and the co-op certificate (6 quarters of internship) in 4 years.

By Sanza04 (Sanza04) on Saturday, April 17, 2004 - 06:08 am: Edit

Stanfordnualum: Ya but in a separate school..I can minor in journalism but not film ... I can't do anything with film... just communication studies so there isn't as much flexibility with majors.

I'm Adam, I'll be majoring in Radio/TV/Film next year, and I'm currently debating whether to make the Comm. Res. College or Allison my first choice. Then again, the housing application hasn't even been released yet, and I heard there's a lot more info in that. I live in Oklahoma City, and my IM is Coolman615.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Tuesday, May 04, 2004 - 06:54 pm: Edit

Hey have you guys signed up for the public speaking times you want yet? Or is that just for Comm. Studies people? I'm not sure, but I was a bit confused by the School of Comm. website/registration thing. I hope I found the right student ID # too....anyway I signed up for the 11:00 one as my first choice and the 10:00 one as my second choice. What about you guys? And when are we allowed to actually register for other stuff? *sigh* there's just so much I'm not clear on right now.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Friday, May 07, 2004 - 07:38 pm: Edit

BUMP?

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Thursday, June 24, 2004 - 03:30 am: Edit

Artemisnight,

wow this is an extremely delayed post but whatever!

i dont know what public speaking times you are talking about. All i know is that when i looked at the caesar for me the public speaking classes are pretty much filled up. I never got an email telling me to sign up so im thinking maybe its just for communication studies people...or i hope considering its a month and a half later and i havent signed up for anything! did they email you or something?

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Saturday, June 26, 2004 - 11:42 pm: Edit

No I just went to the School of Comm site and it had some "to-do" list or something and listed on there was some sort of registration thing for a public speaking class. I'm pretty sure it was just them asking you to say if you had a preference for a certain time. Here's the link:

http://www.communication.northwestern.edu/programs/undergraduate/incoming/

I found it confusing. I think I messed it up anyway. Well if you didn't know anything about it and they never actually sent out an email to me then I assume it was just some weird quasi-option for pre-registration. How weird. Have you noticed how just lots of other schools have already given out room assignments and some have even started scheduling? It seems like all my friends already know their rooms and most know their schedules. I want to know if I got into the School of Comm Res College! July needs to hurry up.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 03:56 pm: Edit

The link you gave me just opened to a blank page.

That's okay i really dont want to take public speaking anyway. Im hoping to take CMN 101 and 103 and avoid 102 altogether (cause you only have to take two out of the three from CMN 101-103).

And yes i definately never got any e-mail or anything so who knows!

When you say lots of other schools have given out room assignments do you mean schools within northwestern or schools in the country? cause no one i know has gotten their northwestern room assignment. As for scheduling i know that WCAS has given out freshman seminars, but as communication students we dont take freshman seminars. I think that is all that has been scheduled.

I know the end of July definately needs to come faster cause i want to know my roommate and my dorm! I didnt apply for the Comm Res College though; I'm not a theatre person (communication disorders) so yes i didnt want to be in that dorm!

sorry it took me a while to respond; i was on vacation

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 12:52 pm: Edit

I meant other schools in the country. Seems like all my friends know already. Ahhhh that makes sense about the freshman seminars, I was wondering about that. I'm not in theatre either, I didn't know the dorm was supposed to be for them. Hmm....that should be interesting. Sorry about the blank page, that's odd. But I think you're right, it can't really matter that much. I'm really excited to hear about the dorm stuff though.....argh I want to know now.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 01:14 pm: Edit

I did the pre-registration thing and was sent an e-mail saying that that ws from last year and theat scheduling was going to be different this year and all of it would be done at new student week.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 04:24 pm: Edit

Artemisnight,
the dorm isnt supposed to be for theatre but i've heard it ends up that way. and although i was a thespian (for stage crew) i always felt uncomfortable around theatre people! the south campus is just more theatre-ish in general while the north is more frat and parties and jocks. while i dont party my major classes will be up north so i chose that...

My friends do all know what dorm they are in and have all registered for classes but this is because
1) the state schools here start in August (out of my school i'd say about 20/800 seniors are going out of state and i'm the only one going to a top 15 school)
2) the state schools requested dorms and such in october (i even paid a deposit just in case i went instate so i could have a dorm)
3) Orientation for state schools AND lots of out of state schools has already occured. it seems like lost of schools have orientation where they pick their classes and take placement tests BEFORE new student week. i dont know why NU doesnt do this? I'm worried about taking a physics placement test four months after getting out of school!

Wattsski,
thanks for clearing that up!! I feel way better now that i know im not missing something :-).

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 04:50 pm: Edit

Desrtswimer,

Yeah I don't know why NU doesn't either, I think it would really be helpful. I guess they figure it's more efficient to do it all during New Student Week. I also sent in a dorm deposit for an in-state school just in case. Good thing I managed to get a refund! And yeah, I'm sure those placement tests will be tons of fun now that we've all been out of school for so long....oh well, c'est la vie!

Only 20/800! Wow that's really not many! We have a similar situation at my school where almost everyone goes to the local university, but we don't have nearly that many students. This year for some reason we had more diversity in universities, but that's far from the norm.

Ahhhh so that's how the campus breaks up in terms of north and south. I didn't know. I don't party either so I guess I'll be happier down south anyway, although I'm similar to you in that I never really clicked with the theatre people at my school. Oh well, I imagine it'll be different at NU.

So do you have any idea what else you want to take? I've been thinking that since I've been studying French for so long I might try to do a double major with it, I hear that's often encouraged in the School of Comm, but I'm not sure. You mentioned physics, is that required for your major or are you going to pursue it on the side?

And Wattski, let me thank you as well for clearing that up! I was really confused about the whole thing. How weird to be a clueless freshman again...

By Ker12 (Ker12) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 04:37 pm: Edit

Hey Artemisnight,

I'm WCAS not Comm so this is in the wrong thread I guess, but I'm also not a theatre person, don't party, and registered for all south-campus dorms. I'm sure there are plenty of us :).

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 04:56 pm: Edit

Artemisnight,

Not only did i pay a deposit at my in state college i also did one at Purdue cause those fill up so quickly also :-). oh well!

Don't worry i signed up for south campus dorms also...as my third fourth and fifth choice. Just because the only north campus dorms i would want would be elder and sargent so then i just picked non-themed south campus dorms...willard, allison, shepard. When i visited they just told me that cause the frat houses are north there are more parties north and cause the theatre classes are south there are more theatre people south. im sure it will be fine wherever you end up...i spent the night in shepard at Discover NU and it was fine.

I want to double major also so no worries! I wanted to double major in buisness and communication until i realized...northwestern doesnt HAVE an undergraduate buisness major. So i dont know i want to double major in something cause my degree as it is gives me a BScomm whatever that is!

haha i DONT want to pursue physics at all but physics is one of the few placement tests where if you place out of it you get credit for the class even if you never take anymore classes again. So since i took physics in high school (senior year) i hope to be able to place out of something!

ugh i HATE foreign language so i wanted to take sign language too bad they dont offer that at northwestern so i guess ill take spanish. i actually dont have to take anything cause i dont think foreign language is a requirement in the school of communications? what are you majoring in? communication studies? im in communication sciences and disorders so maybe we'll have some classes together!

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Tuesday, July 06, 2004 - 03:01 pm: Edit

Desrtswimer,

I'm glad to hear you want to double major too! I was hoping I wouldn't be alone in that regard. And I totally understand the getting-out-of-physics goal, I hope I manage to get out of some classes that way. I'm sure you should be able to get some credit from that.

I'm surprised they don't have sign language, but hey, Spanish is a great language to know nowadays. But I think you're right, I'm pretty sure it's not a requirement for Comm students.

Yeah, I'm majoring in Comm Studies. It would be sweet to have some classes together, most definitely. I bet we will actually, although I don't honestly know my graduation requirements...because I'm lazy and didn't look at them yet.

And Ker12, I'm glad there's more than just me! Hey already now we have 3 people on this thread who don't party. So at least I won't be alone there either! Now all I need is for the housing info to come so I can see where I'm going to be for the next year of my life.....

We all know that CAS is the best

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Wednesday, July 07, 2004 - 02:01 am: Edit

Artemisnight,

Yeah im pretty sure also we dont have to take a foreign language. But in this day and age it can't hurt....I was SHOCKED that they didnt have sign language! And actually, I didnt know until too late. The community college around here only offers Sign language 101 during the first summer session which starts June 1st. We dont get from school until like June 11. I dont know how i will ever take sign language...

I don't know if I'm going to be able to take the physics placement test because its on a sunday morning. And its the first sunday morning in Evanston and as I dont have a car i was planning on taking advantage of Campus Crusade for Christ's offer to drive us to churches or whatever. So i dont know i emailed the person in charge asking if i could take it at another time. Sunday morning seems so weird for them to offer it...specially from a school whos motto is "whatsoever is pure..." from phillipians in the Bible!

I'm sure we will have classes cause I actually have looked at your majors requirements on accident sometimes when im looking for mine! Our department is so small anyways that I'm sure we will see eachother!

I'm getting anxious for housing...I want to know! good thing im going away until the 12th so then ill only have to wait another couple of weeks after that.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Wednesday, July 07, 2004 - 02:22 am: Edit

I know that RTVF has a foreign language requirement. Back to Spanish, blech! It is supposed to be good to know but I have bad memories from high school Spanish class. I don't want to take the two hour online placement test either.

I'm not super religous, but I have a friend in Campus Crusade and I totally want to go the broomball event, mostly just because I want to play broomball... does that mean I'm going to hell?

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Wednesday, July 07, 2004 - 02:32 am: Edit

Wattsski,

i do believe that is why they have the broomball event--to have christians and nonchristians alike come. It actually is A TON of fun. I have only done it once before but i can honestly say it is one of the most things i have ever done in my life.

Don't worry it wont stop with campus crusade for Christ...they will suck you in :-). haha just kidding. its supposed to be an outreach club so don't worry you are fine for just wanting to go to broomball!!

PS. Im sure all of you were worried for me, but never fear! I just checked my email and the person in charge said i could take my placement test for physics a day later than scheduled (monday). I love that northwestern is a semi-small school that actually cares! I cant imagine emailing my instate school (u of a) and being like "umm can i take this exam later?" yeah right! now i must actually study though! cause i want OUT of physics! two hours for physics, two hours for spanish...blah!

pps. i feel like this has turned into the "desrtswimer" thread. oh well! I enjoy talking to people on this so i get the false security that i actually know people!

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Wednesday, July 07, 2004 - 11:31 pm: Edit

Desrtswimer,

I too enjoy the feeling that I now know people. It's defintely reassuring. Haha have fun studying for that! Although it's great that they were so accommodating. I'd say that bodes well for the whole NU experience, wouldn't you? yay! Not too long to wait now.....

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 01:28 pm: Edit

Haha! I suppose it depends on whether you want to hear it officially or not *wink*.

I didn't know you could take placement tests online! That's a useful bit of information. I wonder if I could go ahead and do my French placement test...hmm...

I'm getting really excited about the start of the year. I'll just be sitting around somewhere and then I'll think "Hey, it's July. September is really not that far off, which means....NU!" Of course followed by that is a strong wave of anxiety, but I'm hoping that optomism will conquer my usual nervousness. But think about it, I mean it's really not that far off.

Did any of you apply to one of those pre-programs, btw? I didn't, but I was just wondering if anyone else did.

Yup, back to doing summer-esque things.

I applied to Project Wildcat. The e-mail reply said that decisons would be given out next week. I hope that is true! I also want to get my AP Scores for my Statistics and Human Geography tests because I didn't get those when I called because I had to take those late.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Sunday, July 11, 2004 - 05:47 pm: Edit

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Sunday, July 11, 2004 - 08:34 pm: Edit

I'm afraid that mine will come very late because I had to take two late tests (including the late late Human Geography test that had to be taken two days later than the late late date because they weren't shipped in on time.) That and I'm a W. I got mine about a week later than everyone else I know last year.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 - 03:48 am: Edit

Artemisnight,

haha you are so much the opposite of me. I think "ITS ONLY JULY!?!" But i think that's just 'cause one of my good guy friends leaves in like three weeks and everyone else in a month. We, on the otherhand, have over two months to go.

I dont know if the french test and spanish tests are available online yet. When i looked before going on vacation it was still last years stuff.

And yes that they were so willing about the placement tests did make me happy because it means the prof's are caring (i hope)! Too bad now i have to go at 9 am on monday morning...ugh

Wattsski,

This sound dumb but what is a W? I have been up for like five days straight (went on a senior trip...course i slept a little i expand the truth) but yes im confused about what a W is. Also i know other people who took late tests and got their grade. I just got my grade in az today. i was excited because last year i litterally didnt get them until august. I just called this time.

i didnt apply to any pre-orientation things. and im not catholic or jewish so im not doing that day early thing that got sent in the mail either.

I hope some of this makes sense. I am very tired!

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 - 11:08 am: Edit

Haha. I guess I should have been more specific, I figured you might figure it out from my name. My last name is Watts and so us folks at the end of the alphabet tend to get stuck at the end of the line for things like this and getting our wildcards (I get mine the last day of distibution.)

Turns out I got my AP scores yesterday. I already had called and gotten most of them but the tests I took late hadn't been posted yet. So I finally got my Stats score. Yay, I got a 5! Too bad it kinda doesn't matter unless I'm planning on taking more stats with the way my AP credits are going to work out. My Geo test wasn't on my report though. My friend said something about getting it in August.

Sadly I am not part of the facebook. I am holding strong in my determination not to join it. perhapes when i go to NU and actually KNOW people but i stop my desire to pretend i have friends and get a false sense of security at signing up for the facebook. ;-)

that and i am afraid no one will friend me! :-)

Oh and Wattsski, you can give me your stats grade. turns out i took calc for no reason--my major requires stats! wanna trade ;-)?

wow this is so ridiculous! i seriously wish we could trade. I need stats for my major and not calc. you need calc and not stats. i have calc credits and you have stats. we should sooo switch!!

btw, we should get our housing soon i hope?

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 12:39 am: Edit

They say the last week of July. That kinda stinks because the Container Store by my house is having an invitation only college sale on Sunday and my mom won't let me get anything until I know where and with whom I am rooming.

By Kk19131 (Kk19131) on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 12:53 am: Edit

Exactly! Everything with NU is so last minute.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 01:02 am: Edit

no kidding!

well i'm buying most of my linens and such saturday. i have to shop because the universities here start in mid-august and the stores are already running out of stuff. I figure everything but appliances i'm going to need one of my own of anyway so...

::sigh:: well its already june 15 (if you're on the east coast or IN CHICAGO :-)) so maybe within the next week. maybe they will surprise us and come before this weekend!

hahahaha we can hope cant we? it just says BY the last week in july so maybe that means BEFORE :-). yeah right!

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 01:53 am: Edit

God I hope that's right! Everybody now knows rooms and stuff here (ie where I live) and I'm going crazy because I really want to know everything! Especially because we all have to decide about appliances and stuff, so you know...I'd like to be able to do that.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 03:33 pm: Edit

Yeah, me too. I know it is really annoying how last minute everything at NU is. It would be really great if they suprised us and did it early. I don't know what the issue is with holding out so long. One of my friends who starts school only a week before us knew who his roommates were the first week of May. All the schools here start mid-August too... supplies are already running low but I'm going to get the bottom of the barrel since my mom is making me wait. Grrr. I'm really sick of waiting. I want to figure this stuff out and then go buy stuff. Doesn't that sound articulate?

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 04:28 pm: Edit

Highly articulate, and my sentiments exactly. Pleaaase please let the room stuff come soon!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 12:21 am: Edit

Hmmm we need some new excitement.

Wattsski, Artemisnight, kk19131, since you guys are the only one responding anymore....

when are you guys flying into chicago? what airline and what airport? maybe we will be at the airport in chicago the same time!!

I'm flying on a united flight from new york (i live in phx but have a wedding in new york) that lands at 12 oclock in the afternoon on monday at ORD.

wow i just realized this a lame topic but what can you do?!?!? maybe one of you will have a better topic starter...

By Kk19131 (Kk19131) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 12:44 am: Edit

I'll be coming from Philadelphia, but I'm not sure when/where yet. I dont even have tickets yet... AHHHHHHH!!!!

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 01:01 am: Edit

I'm coming from Denver and I garuntee that I'm going to O'Hare. It has a cheaper cab fair and I know that I'll probably end up spending the night before at my grandparent's house in Northfield. I'm coming in early for PWild so I proably won't be there the same day as you are. I like how this is all communications students. Woo hoo. We're the coolest!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 01:54 am: Edit

DENVER!

I AM MAD at DENVER! United kept wanting me to fly through DENVER and i kept going NO NONSTOP.

why dont you take the trains instead of the cab? i think they have one that goes right to Northwestern.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 04:01 pm: Edit

I think the train you take from O'Hare to Evanston makes you go to Downtaown Chicago first, that would take like 2 and a half hours to get to campus vs. about half an hour. Plus, if I go a night early and stay at my grandparents' house the night before I have to be there I have to take a cab.

Sorry about United. Denver is a hub so what can I say? That is the nice thing, lots of flights from Denver to O'Hare since they are both hubs! Well, nice for me anyway.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 07:04 pm: Edit

yes, nice for you :-)

can you believe it? only like two months exactly until new student week.

i have so much to do. and yet WASTE soooo much time!! probably cause two months STILL seems like a lot. im a deadline girl all the way.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 01:02 am: Edit

Haha me too. I waste tons of time. Every time I try to discuss college stuff like bank accounts and shipping my stuff to school and when I'm going to buy stuff with my parents we get absolutely nowhere so I know that I'm going to be rushing about this stuff in August. I'm so ready to get out of here.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 02:01 am: Edit

I think we might just be driving since I'm only in good ole' Ohio. It would be cool if I did end up flying and we were all in the airport at the same time though! Is it really only two months? Wow...that puts things in perspective. I knew it was close, but that's reaaaaallly soon. Yeah, Wattsski, I'm also totally ready to hit the road and get to NU. Things around here are beginning to feel cramped. I think it's definitely time to spread my wings.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 02:03 am: Edit

Oh, and it is totally cool that this is all Comm students! We do indeed rock. Our thread so owns all the others *wink*

By Koyaanisqatsi (Koyaanisqatsi) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 03:35 pm: Edit

Why do none of the other NU Schools have a thread? And why do we have more posts than any other thread?

Why does the School of Communication rule so much?

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 07:37 pm: Edit

I guess none of the other schools have one because no one from those schools made one. We have more posts because we're terribly interesting, and the School of Comm rules..just because it does. *grin* Go us!

Also, I really do not want to take that placement test for French. And have you guys checked out that Alcohol Edu thing or whatever? This really is reminiscent of D.A.R.E. And like that, Alochol Edu is mandatory. I just hope it won't affect my GPA or whatever if my "personal journals" or whatever aren't up to par. *sigh* * do not imagine that this is going to be fun.

By Kk19131 (Kk19131) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 07:55 pm: Edit

I know! And the freaking thing is 2 hours long! What the heck is that about???!!!!????

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 10:26 pm: Edit

I have no idea! 2 hours, 2 whole hours...NU curse you I do not want to waste that much time on something that ineffectual. If there's one thing I've learned from high school it's that people who want to party are going to party if they want to, no matter what anyone says. This must just be a liability thing. That way if some kid gets in trouble for drinking or driving drunk or whatever NU can hold its hands up and say "Noooow parents, we hope you realize that we DID make your son/daughter take Alcohol Edu! We are ooobviously not responsible for anything that happened. Yep yep yep, alcohol edu sure is great!"

Or at least, that's the only feasible reason I can think of. Maybe I'm too cynical.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 11:48 pm: Edit

haHAHAHAhaha "yep yep yep, alcohol edu sure is great!"

wow i know if they SERIOUSLY think they are going to make a difference they are idiots.

and i dont drink either but i know kids will and this will not help one bit. nope not one bit. tis a waste of my two hours! (since cc absolutely IS NOT ;-)).

So i went shopping today....373 dollars later i have ALMOST everything i need (obviously stuff that i need to split with my roommates and stuff that i just thought was ugly at bed bath and beyond). Phew that was more exahusting than i thought it would be.

im kind of glad i have to weeks until i have to go back after figuring out roommate stuff...that was tiring! (i believe i said that already right? well im getting my point across!)

and yes the school of communication OBVIOUSLY is the best school at NU and that is why we have such a sensational (my word of the week) thread. 'cause we obviously just communicate the best!! hahaha oh dear time for me to go!

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 12:03 am: Edit

Ha! But of course, why did I not consider that? We are indeed the school of communications, it should have been obvious to us all why we communicate the best. Excellently phrased, Desrtswimer!

I wish we had a Bed Bath & Beyond here. I'm going to have to go to Lancaster or Columbus to find anything at all because frankly my town has nothing. But at least you got all of that out of the way...it's on my to-do list. Along with 4 million other things. I'm sort of stubbornly plodding along thinking that until I hear about my roommate I might as well not do anything proactive in terms of dorm-room shopping. Well, that was poorly phrased, but I think it's understandable.

Seriously though, I think the only thread longer than ours on NU is the "accepted" one. Maybe that's not a bragging point, but I still think it's sweet. Oh, and naturally Desrtswimer 2 hours on CC are two hours well spent! unlike alcohol edu which is a humongous waste of precious summer time.

I really should try to go through that "stuff to buy" checklist and try to get some stuff together. I'm still hoping my housing assignment will magically appear tomorrow though..even though it's sunday.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 12:26 am: Edit

Bed Bath and beyond was pretty awesome. but pretty much avoid anything that says "equip your space" above it and APPEARS to be a great deal on something needed on your dorm. IT is usually something cheap that will break and is worth finding a MUCH higher quality in for 10 bucks more.

For example, their down comforter that was almost sold out under the "equip your space" sign was 50 bucks. alas, the twim was smaller than all the other twins and was MUCH smaller. I instead opted to spend the 20 extra bucks and bought a much nicer one!

I went with my brothers fiance (who is a college senior) so she helped me with what i definately need and what i dont so it was fun and a good chance to spend more time with her. we also went bridal dress/bridesmaid shopping. i assure you, they PURPOSELy make bridesmaid dresses ugly.

and i actually have learned SOOO many good stuff off of cc so i suppose its worth it. i wish i knew how much people normally spend when going shopping?? and its nice that im done--well kinda, still need some more but got MOST of it--but i wish i had that money still ;-). oh well thats what all my graduation gifts were for, and my summer job.

i decided that i need to know your name artemisnight cause its awkward that we still call eachother by our screen names. imagine us in classes...so desrtswimer yada yada...yes my name is sharon. i could just scroll up and find out yours but im lazy. you must type it again :-). where do you live again?

also our thread is so long cause we DO communicate fantastically BUT also cause its like same like four people forever writing back and forth to eachother (we can leave that part out!)

I know maybe next week it will appear? thatd be funny if people on this thread got eachother...course we wouldnt know cause no one knows eachothers real names!

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 01:28 am: Edit

Haha. That would be crazy. I really need to go shopping because things are starting to run low at the local stores, school starts in about three weeks for most of my freinds. My mom won't let me get anything until I find out about my roommate and talk to them. I hope my roomie doesn't want everything to be pink! I think that is the one color that I cannot stand and I would have major issues focusing in the room.

Really, we should all pick a day to get together during NSW. That would be great. My name is Jenica if anyone wants to know.

I don't want to take the AlcoholEdu or the Spanish placement test. I didn't take Spanish this year so I really don't want to crack out the books and start studying... there could go 4 hours of my life plus studying yuck!

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 01:50 am: Edit

yeah those tests and alcoholedu are going to be killer.

And you're right Sharon (ha! real names!) it will be much easier to communicate (our favorite thing on this thread) with real names. So, my name is Claire. I live in good old Ohio. Smack dab in the middle of what we fondly refer to as "Appalachia." But I'm in a college town, so it's a rather interesting mix of the back woods types and the college folk. And you are definitely right, I think it's a requirement that bridesmaids' dresses be as hideous as possible. Probably so the bride looks much better in comparison or something. Ooo and thanks for the tip on the not buying discount, that really would have been my natural inclination, as I am cheap.

Ugh yeah Jenica, pink would be pretty bad to have as a dorm room theme. Pink should only be used in moderation. yeah I know I should study for French too...but you know that summer apathy kind of has me in thrall. It will be pretty difficult for me to motivate myself to open up the ole grammar books.

And yeah, we should pick a day. Ahh I'm so excited for NSW and to get to NU!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 02:06 am: Edit

Jenica of course I wanted to know your name! :-) no more Wattsski for me!

Well i just got finished comparing what i bought to whats online at Linens and Things and it looks like I will be returning some things tommorrow. Actually all i need to return is the sheets i bought because that is like the ONE thing i got cheap on and bought the "equip your space" ones cause i was soo exhausted after spending 70 bucks on a down comforter..eek..but i just realized that the thread count is hideous and i need better sheets. I suppose im not even returning them...im just telling them not to order them for me in chicago and to give me my money back :-). Im also returning my towels now to get better ones. oh and the rug for a prettier one at lnt :-).

you're right, pink should only be used in moderation. alas pink is one of the colors of the wedding so my bridesmaids dress will be...pink! luckily i look decent in pink. i think its ridiculous though that all five girls get the SAME exact dress when we obviously all have different body types and need different dresses! ah well. oh i meant to say that i bought mostly bright blue and red stuff for my room so that should be okay with everyone i hope.

I'm not studying for my spanish placement test only because i havent had spanish in two years and really want to test into what i SHOULD be in. like i dont want it to be too hard and crazy for me. i only expect to pass out of one semester or MAYBE two of spanish. theoretically i've taken one full year of spanish (two in high school) so maybe i can get out of a year...it has been two years though!

im so compulsive i should just buy what i bought and be done with it but NOOOO i have to go check and make sure i got good stuff. oh well its only the sheets and the rug and besides that im good. also if you register and linens and things online and dont have stuff bought by august first (which we obviously wont) you get 10% off whats leff in your registry! So i just registered stuff that i still need and havent bought and will just wait until august first now! just thought id share.

sorry if my messages make no sense. i really do communicate better normally but every time i post on this board im REALLY tired and just kind of type and never check spelling or grammer. i figure you guys can deal with it!

**EDIT** we should pick a day closer to NSW so we know our schedules and when we'll have time. but i definately want to meet you guys after talking to you so much on this message board!

Does anyone know why the Dental School closed?

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 11:39 am: Edit

Wow... our thread is HUGE! Anyway, as for the dental school. I now nothing about that.

Bright blue and red are good colors. I'm figuring I'll be somewhere along the same lines. Sharon, good luck with the wedding, I hope that dress thing doesn't turn into a disaster. The good thing is that if you don't look great people won't really think it is your fault, they'll just think, "It's too bad those desses are so ugly." I think the best bridesmaid's dress situation I've ever seen was when my Dad's cousin got married, the brides all wore a black dress. So everyone could have whatever looked good on them.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 02:50 pm: Edit

Haha... all the brides wore black.... I mean all the bride's maids wore balck.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 03:13 pm: Edit

Yeah at my cousin's wedding she said something like "in the maroon genre" and then let the bridesmaids find their own dresses. That strikes me as a good idea.

Yeah, you're right Sharon we should wait till closer to NSW. Also I think blue and red are excellent colors, I'm sure your roommate won't have a problem with them. And hopefully the pink dress won't look TOO atrocious.

Kk19131 I do not know why the dental school closed. Maybe they didn't have enough applicants to sustain it...I dunno. To my mind dentistry would be a teeerrible field. But of course that is why I am not becoming a dentist.

Oh and thanks for the tip about the online linen thing Sharon. I should totally take advantage of that!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 08:28 pm: Edit

Well i ALREADY went and returned some thingss. the sheets that i bought that were the wrong size and then towels that i bought cause i dont want to have to pack them up later. i can ALWAYS buy towels. I couldnt return the rug or the other set of sheets cause its already on hold for me at the store in chicago so i'll just have to return it there. I did go to target though and buy some new (250) thread count sheet. now I MUST resist buying anything else till i get my roommate!

Claire, im not sure if the linens and things thing is august 1st or august 15 that it becomes ten percent off. be sure to put august 15 as your event date cause you dont want the ten percent off to only count AFTER september 14!

The pink dress is actually really cute. its like knee length and cute just not something i would chose to spend 100 plus dollars on willingling. but hey i only get to be a bridesmaid in my brothers wedding once!

I'm glad everyone likes my blue and red...i think half the world will have those colors though! like EVERYTHING at the stores is blue and red :-) or at least at bed bath and beyond. oh well!

now im tired...time for a nap!

Yeah! welcome to the thread Alexandra! That's pretty much what we've been saying...that and that we're desperate for our rooming assignments. ARRRGH they really need to come.

Oh, and glad the dress is cute Sharon. Although you're right that $100 is a bit steep. I think my family is going to Columbus tomorrow so maybe I can get some dorm shoppin done then. Hope so!

Hi Alexandra! Welcome to the most communicative School of Communications thread ever! Yay... tomorrow it's AlcoholEdu time and only up to two weeks to find out about roommates!

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 01:20 am: Edit

The University administration in 1998 recommended closing the school, citing the difficulty of private institutions such as Northwestern being in the academic forefront with leading public dental schools, which receive between $30,000 and $60,000 per dental student annually in state support.

A subcommittee of the Board of Trustees conducted an extensive review of the proposal and available options and met with Dental School faculty, staff, students and alumni. The subcommittee agreed with the administration, and the Board of Trustees voted in March 1998 to close the school. The closing was delayed until 2001 to allow current dental students to complete their studies and receive degrees on Saturday.

I found this on the NU site somewhere. There's your anwser KK

Hi Alexandra,

I'm so glad that someone else has come into this thread for more variety, not to say that you clair and Jenica aren't awesome :-)

That was interesting information on the dental school. now i know more random information.

oh 100 bucks is the minimum. this is like prom dress shopping ALL OVER AGAIN! hopefully i can wear THIS DRESS again :-)

Hey! Anybody else start the AlcholEdu thing yet? I gotta tell ya it's fun! *Rolleyes* I only have gotten to the first video and I know that it is going to be boring already! Oh well, at least we don't have to read a book on it and write an essay or something. With the way that all of the stuff at NU runs based off the internet, it makes you wonder what they did before there was so much access to the internet.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 01:35 pm: Edit

Remember Jenica, you should probably break up the session into mulitiple sittings seeing how it will be so difficult ;-) and you MUST get 80 percent right to pass....gag me!!!

By Kk19131 (Kk19131) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 02:54 am: Edit

Yay, I totally stole this from the Berkeley forum. LOL

Apart from the “normal” hallmarks of an elite university, how much do you guys think the appeal of a university’s name plays a role in its prestige or perceived prestige?

Most would agree that certain universities have more “appealing” names than others. Oddly enough, I think the top elites have very distinctive, “appealing” names: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford… Hopefully, these names aren’t appealing simply because we’ve been brain-washed to think so. Regardless, I really do think a distinctive, catchy name helps a university to stand out and makes it easier for the general public (nationally and internationally) to recognize the university.

Before I go any further – I’m hoping for this to just be a fun, jovial discussion. To those who want to make this thread otherwise, please go somewhere else.

It’s hard to identify what makes a good university name (and vice versa), but dare I try?

Characteristics that make a university’s name more appealing:

1. Must be catchy and easy to remember (Sorry Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, and University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill)
2. Generally 1 or 2 syllables (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and Duke fit the bill).
3. Starts/Ends in a solid (consonant) sound (Princeton, Stanford).
4. Follows the convention of “______ University.” (i.e. Harvard University – Sorry University of Pennsylvania)
5. Is able to withstand the “one word” test. In other words, can you refer to the university without having to mention “university” or “U?” (Haaahvad, Duke, and Berkeley pass this test.)
6. Your school’s name is M.I.T. or CalTech (or Harvard, or Yale, or Princeton, or Stanford, or Berkeley).

Characteristics that make a university’s name less appealing:

1. Your school’s name is Stanford University. Oh c’mon. This is a Cal forum.
2. Follows the convention of “University of _______ .” (Sorry University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign – whew!)
3. Anything that even hints that it might be a state university (God forbid!) (Sorry University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, and Washington University (St. Louis)). Washington U gets a bonus for the “(St. Louis)”
4. Being named after a color (Brown, especially Brown! Or Purdue… oh oops, that’s not a color – it just sounds like something that’s a certain color).
5. Being named after a direction (Northwestern?).
6. Being named after a toothpaste (Colgate).
7. Being named after a food staple (Rice, Cornell).
8. Having more than 1 word in the university’s name. Case in point: Johns Hopkins. I don’t mean to just pick on Johns Hopkins. There’s also Case Western, Carnegie Mellon, … Ahhhhh!! Already too many words to remember!
9. Using exclusively everyday commoners’ words as part of the name: Case Western, Brown, and Rice.
10. Also, God forbid your school’s name is “_____ college.” A ‘university’ is so much more better than a ‘college.’ So much more.
11. Names with too many consonants, too many syllables, or otherwise just too d**n difficult to say (Columbia, Vanderbilt, Dartmouth – try saying Dartmouth 5 times in a row)
12. Your university’s name is not Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Caltech, or Stanford. (Ok, maybe not Stanford.)

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 11:36 am: Edit

ha! that was hilarious. Thanks for posting that, it was definitely amusing. Have you guys had about like 90% of people you tell you're going to NU look at you with a blank face and then say "Oh, where's that?" Because that keeps happening to me, it's frustrating. I wish it had just a liiiiittle more name recognition around here. But that's really a minor annoyance, I just get tired of saying "Right outside of Chicago..."

Oh, and I started Alcohol Edu. By god those are going to be the worst two hours of my life. Ok well, not really, but pretty damn close. Oh, athletes drink a lot? Really?! Wow! Greek members drink a lot? You're kidding! Please let it get better after Chapter one, otherwise I won't survive until the end!

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 03:04 pm: Edit

Actually, I really like Northwestern's name... maybe it's because I live in Colorado and I've always liked what I've connotated with the west and north directons and wished that Colorado was really the northwest instead of the southwest. I think in some mannor Northwestern's name is some deepseeded motivation for me to go there. Although I am getting really sick of hearing people think it is that school in Gunnison (which is actually Western State College where people who couldn't get into CU or CSU go.) I would like a little recogniton here or there. Just wait until we get to the mid-west though, people there seem really really impressed.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 02:25 am: Edit

Looks like this thread needs a little rejuvinating. I finished AlcoholEdu! Woo hoo! Monica is really annoying, she baby talks...blech. And the white guy with the spikey hair looks like he's about 35 and kinda creepy.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 02:28 am: Edit

Claire,
I've given up. I just say im going to chicago for school and let it be. i dont even try to say northwestern anymore. we have a southwestern AND a midwestern here is arizona so its inevitable they think of that. I dont know why but northwestern just DOES NOT have name recognization in arizona.

Jenica,
I definately have only gotten to section 2 of alcohol edu. did anyone else find that the volume is too quiet? i hate having to put it up EVERY SINGLE TIME the screen switches but i cant hear!

By Kk19131 (Kk19131) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 03:02 am: Edit

AlcoholEdu is sooooo ridiculously easy... it's just way too long and stupid.. I mean athletes and Greeks drink a lot? well you could have knocked me over with a feather.... the only sad thing is that I actually got a question wrong lol.... but yay I got a 98 so I dont care!

And that old dude does look very creepy.... like "would you like some candy little boy" creepy LOL

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 03:28 am: Edit

umm okay kk19131 you know what is incredibly awkward?

you definately post in the same lj community as me and i had NOO idea you were one and the same until like this second. Something in your "athletes and greeks drink a lot, well you could have knocked me over with a feather" clicked and i was like " i could have sworn i read that somewhere!" So sure enough i go and look and you are quietstorm or whatever.

really its only awkward for me cause you probably figured it out a long time ago due to the fact that i use the same screen names for everything.

and so that is my random thought. just wanted to let you know that i know that you know that you know. or really its just that i know who you are but i really sounds better longer.

I use the same screennames for everything too. Too bad that means that one of my friends came on here and stalked me and read my post about my other friend on the Ivy League Rejects thread re-insighting a long resolved fight because he told all these other people. Grrr.

I had issues with the volume on the AlcoholEdu thing too. Yeah, it is annoying to keep having to turn it up.

By Kk19131 (Kk19131) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 11:50 am: Edit

Hahaha! indeed those are both me. I thought all the ridiculose numbes after the names would have given it away easily lol... I guess not.. sorry for not making that clear; but yes, I did know who you were

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 09:29 pm: Edit

ha. I use the same screenname for pretty much everything too, it's a lot simpler, no?

And yes, the volume on Alchohol Edu does suck. I'm on section 2 as well. Ugh...hopefully I'll get through a couple more tomorrow..or maybe the whole thing?

I must add, our thread is now over 100 posts. *grin*

Oh and it was a relief to hear that the final test was easy, Kk19131. I was somewhat worried that somehow it might be difficult. Silly silly me.

Mine was messed up too. Whew... I was worried that it was just me and there was something wrong with my computer.

Copy the entirety of the e-mail into Notepad and save it with a .html extension. Then open it up in your web browser to see it as it should be.

For those of you who know something about this, the e-mail was missing a Content-Type meta tag.

All you conservatives need not click!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 01:53 pm: Edit

Why shouldn't conservatives click?

tisn't like we havent heard it all before. you know, cause the slogans are just SOOO original:

"most hated president ever."

I'd say abraham lincoln is pretty close to the most hated president ever (at his time of office); half the country hated him!! And you could say half the country hate's Bush but I doupt that. Approval ratings and hating someone are much different.

But none of this really matters. all that matters is who wins come election day :-). And im voting absentee (i just registered to vote btw, yay for me.) in ariona because its a swing state. wooohooo.

So for my first election in november i will be....filling out a paper and mailing it to arizona! oh what fun. what joy! (i wish i could actually go into the booth and vote :-()

"And im voting absentee (i just registered to vote btw, yay for me.) in ariona because its a swing state."

Ahh, you all do know that Illinois is pretty much a lock for Kerry, right? The highest Republican in state government is the Treasurer. Sigh...makes me yearn to be a Florida resident.

I probably will be voting absentee as well (even though my home district will definitely be closer than AZ).

I've got something exciting!!! Rooming assginments come this week! Woo hoo. I'm so excited to find out who my roommate is. It would be really hilarious if one of us ended up being roomies with another. Although with all of the students going there the chances of that are really really tiny.

I'm voting absentee too. I've been pretty involved in politics since I've turned 18. I'm a registered Dem. but I pretty much only agree with their social policy, I'm very fiscally conservative, but I'm not radical enough to be a Libertarian, but I lean that way. I've gone to a bunch of local political meetings they're fun but some people are so radical that it's actually pretty scary. I've really been trying to decide if I want to change my affiliation to independant but I want to vote in the primaries and be able to participate in the caucus, which I had to miss this year because I was visiting NU. My friend ended up being a precinct delegate, that's pretty cool. I'm not a huge Bush fan but I don't "HATE" him either. I'm really in a quandry over who to vote for. Anyway... I gotta go.. I made myself some pasta yumm...

Sharon: LOL... but how true, how true...

I will be soooo ticked if it doesn't come this week. Come on NU, at least do this one on time, unlike all the NSW updates that were supposed to happen some time in June and came July 2nd.

By And85 (And85) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 01:39 pm: Edit

Haha, that's true... I have no idea when anything is going to come from them... their "deadlines" are relative...

HEY! I got my rooming assignment! I'm in Ayers CCI... which means I'll be very isolated from all the cool Comm people on south campus... my cousin will be very dissapointed that I'm not on south campus, my friend will be very happy that I'm in CCI because he's the president of it. I hope the rooms are as big and cool as he says they are. I'm gonna freeze going to all my stupid classes on South Campus... what was I thinking when I applied to that? I knew I was going to end up there...

Hey im in Sargent so im on north campus also!!

yeah for north campus!

I'm in Willard, room 328... anyone else?

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 01:25 am: Edit

Yeah! I've got a Comm friend on north campus! Funny thing is that I got my friend's old room and last year there were three people in it so that means my room is going to be big! Yeah! Sharon, it is a good thing that you are going to be on north campus if you're going to be keeping up the swimming, right next to SPAC. Good news is that that is encouragement to work out.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 02:03 am: Edit

Swimming is no mas for me!!

I do go to the gym five days a week though with my weight training schedule and cardio thing i do every day so im hoping to keep that up.

believe it or not the gym was a big incentive for me ot be up north!

Ayers, i wanted to apply to that but decided against it...dont rememember why. oh well im happy with sargent!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Saturday, July 31, 2004 - 05:41 pm: Edit

So has anyone talked to their roommate yet? good talks? bad im-going-to-hate-this-person vibes?

i talked to mine and she seems EXACTLY LIKE ME. its very scary. we're going to get along great.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Saturday, July 31, 2004 - 06:20 pm: Edit

I talked to mine on the phone last night and have extanged a few e-mails with her. She seems really really nice. I'm sure we'll get along well. We just talked a little about ourselves and things we wanted for the dorm. We're just going to get whatever we want and worry about additional storage when we get there. She already has a fridge but we decided we might try to get a TV with a VCR since we can watch DVD's on our laptops but she wants to bring her large VHS collection. Who knows, being a TV/Film student I might need to watch some films in the dorm too. I'm pretty excited though.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Sunday, August 01, 2004 - 02:25 pm: Edit

I just got back from a one week competition in West Virginia! Ahhh it's good to be back! Anyway I got my first choice dorm:

Communications Res College (East Fairchild)
Room 315

My roomie emailed me and she seems pretty nice.

Are we allowed to bring fridges? I thought I read somewhere that we weren't....but I REALLY want one. That struck me as a pretty stupid rule. Anyway, back to sifting through the 100 emails I have leftover from being gone!

By Kk19131 (Kk19131) on Sunday, August 01, 2004 - 07:52 pm: Edit

"Items prohibited from student rooms"

Haier makes a sweet fridge/freezer combo coming in at 2.7 cubic feet, and costs under $100.

Still don't know if it's that useful though

By Miluo (Miluo) on Sunday, August 01, 2004 - 08:53 pm: Edit

You can rent fridges from the school.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Monday, August 02, 2004 - 12:20 am: Edit

Awesome, thanks for telling me! Ha I suppose I should read those things more carefully.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Monday, August 02, 2004 - 12:56 am: Edit

you can rent from the school? where did you find that out? although for two years it might be cheaper to buy...

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Monday, August 02, 2004 - 02:37 pm: Edit

I didn't know you can rent. I haven't heard of that at all. I know any type of cooking device is banned from the rooms but you can have a fridge under 3 cubic feet as stated above.

our thread has died! gah!

hmmm anyone go that webpage that was in the letter?

www.communication.northwestern.edu/incomming.htm

it gives you very helpful advice on which classes to take.

by helpful i mean one class.the general communication class Gen_CMN 108 for me.which i already knew. oh well!! the other three can be "distrubution requirements"

riiiggght.

ps. i got contacts today :-)

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Saturday, August 07, 2004 - 07:04 pm: Edit

hah gooo sharon! Good luck with the contacts! Hmm I guess I probably should check that site out. Lots o stuff to think about what with moving in being only about a month away...

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 03:00 am: Edit

Hm... speaking of contacts I need to go order more before I go to school. I have two week disposables and have been using this pair for about two and a half months...yeah. I've had contacts since fourth grade and now I hate to wear my glasses. I find them occasionally annoying but in general awesome. I can't believe school is only 29 days away for me! WOW! This summer has gone by soooo fast! And I'm even the last one to go. I just had my going to college party tonight. It's sad to think that that is the last time I'll see a lot of those people. First friend leaves on Wednesday. :-( My friend made me the coolest sign for my dorm. It has velcro on it and a little person that can be put on different spots saying where I am. It's sweet!

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 06:39 pm: Edit

Ha awesome! None of my friends have left yet, but I too will be the last one to go. It's sad in a way, but also really exciting. I can't wait to get to NU!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 06:55 pm: Edit

the contacts are sooo frustrating!!!! i can only get them in half the time after struggling for like 30 minutes and once i get them in they HURT sooo bad cause my eyes arent used to them!! i was crying cause they hurt so bad! luckily it always passes (im wearing them now) but i have to take them out in like two hours. three hours in--one hour out till my eyes get used to them.

once of my best guy friends left saturday, he playes soccer and had to go to training. twas sad.

i also am the last to leave.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 08:47 pm: Edit

Don't worry. You'll like your contacts soon enough. If the solution bothers your eyes try different solution or if your eyes are still extrmely bothered by them after a while try a different type or brand of contact. The worst though is falling asleep with them, that can be a bother later that day. Trust me though, you'll enjoy them when they aren't falling off your face like your glasses or you can wear sunglasses or anything like that. I remember having fits when they hurt putting them in when I was little. I would even hide my contacts in another case and put them under my bed then leave my main case sitting open on my sink so that my parents thought I was wearing them when I wasn't. Can't get away with that now, I'd run into a wall.

Lucky for me one of my friends doesn't leave until the 3rd so I'm only alone for thee days.

11 days without an update.... I went dorm shopping yesterday! Got some awesome orange sheets.

By Wonduhbread (Wonduhbread) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 01:11 am: Edit

i have green, purple, and off-white sheets.

also, my comforter from Target is grey, and i've taken some flak about it. What's so wrong with wanting a nice neutral tone to coordinate w/lots of stuff?

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 02:09 am: Edit

HAHA, my conforter is crazy, brown background with multi colored squares (a la Kandinsky's circles) I love it though.

i love brown. seriously.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Saturday, August 21, 2004 - 02:50 pm: Edit

I used to hate the color brown, especially on clothing, but recently I have really come to appreciate it and like it a lot. Wow... this is a deep conversation, how much do you like the color mauve? Personally, I think it is only for old ladies...

Everyone is leaving me! I decided that the sadest part of leaving last is that nobody is there to say goodbye to you, but you are for everyone else. At the same time, I'm getting psyced to go to school.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 08:38 pm: Edit

Yes, you're totally right Jenica. That will be really hard....ugh, not looking forward to bidding people farewell, but I also am excited about school...so hopefully I'll find a balance :).

I decided i should update on this thing. I have said goodbye to pretty much everyone. it does suck sitting here at home just working and doing nothing, while all my friends are gone and having fun at their college.

well at least it makes me excited to go to northwestern.

three weeks from today :-) (or yesterday depending on where you live).

ps. i started packing. alrady have four boxes (just the small file type boxes). There really isnt all that much to pack...photos misc items, winter clothes, ect.

By Artemisnight (Artemisnight) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 12:51 pm: Edit

My close friend is leaving tomorrow, the first of my kind of inner-circle of friends to leave....ugh. Nooot looking forward to that. We should totally form a support group-
"Go to Northwestern? Lonely? Damn straight you are! NU doesn't start for another 3 weeks and you're sitting at home alone! That's why we have this excellent support group for Northwestern students like yourself!" It just needs a snazzy name.
hmmmm.....

But yes, it's going to be a lonely three weeks.

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 03:05 pm: Edit

Haha. I'm soooo glad I'm doing PWild, gets me out of here a week sooner. I'm going to Chicago today and then I come home for a week and then I leave for PWild. Yeah, after I come back only one of my friends will still be here. Said goodbye to two of my good friends today since they leave while I'm gone. Well... gotta go pack!

By Wattsski (Wattsski) on Saturday, August 28, 2004 - 02:32 am: Edit

Well... went by camus today. Must say I was slightly disappointed to find out how far north CCI really is, and how my room didn't look any bigger than my cousin from SMQ's. (I got to peek in the window.) Wow, the humidity out here makes my hair go nuts! It's like I suddenly grew a 'fro. I'll have to see what I'll do about that later on. On the flip side I also went to downtown Chicago and realized that I'm really happy to go to NU, the North Shore is a great area and so many people have offered to help me out if I ever need anything.

NSW is coming soon... maybe we should start planning a get together!??! If anyone wants to find me on campus my room is the first floor of CCI facing Kemper third window on the right, the one that says KJ was here next to it...

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 - 10:37 pm: Edit

For some it came through as a text attachment that wouldnt read. all it was was the safety email that came through last time under the heading of the navy rotc. dont worry it just talks about how we now have more police and blue lights and yada yada and we're safe.

anyone getting excited :-). two weeks until northwestern!

ps. i joined facebook, im a sellout. add me :-)
