what were your stats getting in?

By Linedeacon (Linedeacon) on Sunday, November 23, 2003 - 04:23 pm: Edit

I got in a few weeks ago with 1300 and top 5% rank. The average SAT is 1145 and 22% are in the top 10% of their class. They accept around 50% of applicants. Its a great school with rising stock. I was really impressed with the students(friendliest I ran into and their professors).

What did everyone find most appealing about Elon. I haven't visited and I can't seem to find anyone who has attended. Any info would help!

By Linedeacon (Linedeacon) on Monday, November 24, 2003 - 06:57 pm: Edit

Out of all the schools I visited, which included some much more well knowns, Elon students were the nicest and eager to talk and help you. The campus is beautiful all the facilities were nice, its in NC, I like the south. I talked to some business professors and was really impressed with their approaches and enthusiasm. He even gave us his business card and encouraged us to contact him. If Elon is where I "end up" I couldn't be happier.

By Fiza (Fiza) on Wednesday, February 04, 2004 - 05:09 pm: Edit

I just got in. Can anyone tell me about life at elon/dorms? Also, does anyone have stats abuot Fellow's program acceptees?

By Linedeacon (Linedeacon) on Wednesday, February 04, 2004 - 09:42 pm: Edit

I just got my Jefferson Pilot Business Fellows. I also applied to the Honors Fellows as well, but put it as my second choice, so that is probably why I didn't get it. I had a 1300, top 5% rank, All-State tennis was my main EC. I'm really excited about the weekend, to learn more about Elon. When I visited the first time, everyone seemed very happy. When you say stats about the Fellows program, do you mean those who got accepted or about the actual program? Peace

By Fiza (Fiza) on Wednesday, February 04, 2004 - 10:00 pm: Edit

Linedeacon,

Well I just got invited for the weekend and I was wondering what stats I needed to get that $6000/yr deal. The only thing that might hold me back is my class rank (17th percentile). I was just wondering what SATs and GPA for the ppl getting the scholarship was cause i didnt see that anywhere on the website.
Out of curiousity, did you get the Presidential Scholarship as well?

By Linedeacon (Linedeacon) on Wednesday, February 04, 2004 - 10:23 pm: Edit

You needed to have atleast a 1300 SAT and a pretty high GPA. However, the way I understood it was, that you only need those certain stats to apply. You actually earn the scholarship by going to the weekend on campus and being interviewed, etc. And yes, I did receive the Presidential Scholarship.

Hey, I have been accepted to Elon University as well as Mary Washington College, and am attempting to make a decision between the two. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks-James

By Mominva (Mominva) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 11:00 am: Edit

James,
Tell us more about your interests, potential majors, potential ECs. Cost could be a factor if you are instate for MWC. Wondering also about distance from home.

By Schneidpiece (Schneidpiece) on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 09:19 am: Edit

Ok, I'm currently interested in pursuing a possible major in either Journalism or Communications, but am still undecided. I realize the cost of MWC is much less since I am a Virginia Resident. Distance is not a factor. I'm also interested in playing baseball if anyone knows about the sports programs. Does anyone know what life in general is like at these places, how are the people, the food, parties, sports, etc. Thanks for your help!

I have a comment for Fiza. I couldn't help but read your home page journal and have a suggestion to the question of the origin of unlucky Friday the 13th. It was back in the 1300s, Friday, October 13th, 1307 to be exact when the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church sentenced all of the "Knights of Templar" to their deaths along with the torture and crucifixion of their leader. Just thought I might help you out with that!

By Mominva (Mominva) on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 03:01 pm: Edit

James,
For Journalism and Communications, Elon is the place, with top-notch facilities and their hands on approach. Mary Washington does not offer Journalism and Communication majors.

For Baseball, Elon is D-I. MWC is D-III. Are you being recruited? I believe Elon is starting a Club Baseball program this year.

MWC seems to be getting better but still has the reputation of a 'suitcase school' which empties on weekends. Elon has 70% out of state and presumably more kids stick around.

By Gforce007 (Gforce007) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 10:21 pm: Edit

I got into elon, 1290 SAT, 3.0 gpa unweighted, average extracurrics, Im technically nothing special but I had a good rec. and I wrote a great essay, no scholarship or honors program or anything but I was happy to get in

Im not going though, its too expensive, but for people who can afford it, you will no doubt get a great education, the people seem happy and the school has a great atmosphere although it reminded me a lot of my private high school, it's actually kind of cheap for a private liberal arts college

By Hillct09 (Hillct09) on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 08:33 pm: Edit

I just got home from visiting Elon and am absolutely in love with it. I'm wondering about my chances of getting in though, and also possibly receiving a presidential scholarship.

Have a 3.92 weighted gpa, am in the first decile out of 521 students (we don't know our exact rank yet), have a 1320 sat (710 v, 610 m), a 31 act, and a solid schedule (all honors and 5 aps). Have good ec's:
- founding member all-girl's acappella group (asst. director 11, will be director 12)
- women's chorus and chamber choir 11,12 (was just started this year)
- diocesan-wide youth council (only 25 members)
- choir, vestry member, and acolyte @ church
- over 300 hours community service (mostly at a local non-profit movie theater where I'm also the asst. manager)
- key club 9-12
- nhs (am running for vp)
- newspaper asst. editor 11, photo editor 12
- chosen to go to general convention from my diocese, currently only teen on event planning committee for diocese

Any input would be appreciated!

I just came back from Elon, and I wasn't really planning on visiting it. It would be a safety for me, and as a New Jersey girl it's sort of a far stretch from home. However, the campus is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous, which appealed greatly to me. It seemed calm without being dead, but I didn't get to talk to any of the students or anything. I have a challenge for the readers of this post: make me fall in love with Elon. Thanks for any and all input.

By Mwlgal (Mwlgal) on Saturday, September 04, 2004 - 01:53 am: Edit

Ditto to Banana's request for more info on Elon. It has come highly recommended, but I had never heard of it before. Please describe type of students, courseload, town, quality of faculty etc. Thanks

By Fosselover (Fosselover) on Saturday, September 04, 2004 - 04:27 am: Edit

Info on the MT program would be much appreciated. I've heard it is very 'preppy' and you have to be Greek to fit in. Truth or fiction?

By Dennis54 (Dennis54) on Monday, September 06, 2004 - 08:34 pm: Edit

My daughter just started at Elon and absolutely loves it. She had four days of orientation last week before classes began. Her largest class has 32 students (Intro to Psychology), and her other classes have 20 to 25 students. She really loves her Elon 101 Orientation Class, which meets once a week throughout the semester. This group met for about 8 hours before classes even began. The professor/academic advisor had the class to her home for dinner the night before classes began.

The school really does a lot to help the students adjust to college life. My daughter has been very busy with various activities and has already met a lot of friends there.

She also finds her instructors to be very engaging and approachable. I recognize that she has only been there for 10 days, but it is a great start. She has nothing but positive things to say about Elon.

By Banana1216 (Banana1216) on Monday, September 06, 2004 - 11:11 pm: Edit

Thanks Dennis, please pass along any more information she gives you- the positives AND the negatives. The info was helpful...I look forward to hearing more from you (and her) about this little uncovered treasure amid the big names in NC.

Thank you for the info, Elon keeps going on and off the short list. Since we are in S. Calif., it will be a major trip. So the more info. I have the better

A couple of things to add . . . I agree that Elon is one of the most beautiful college campuses that I have seen. The "new" blends very well with the "old" and there are plenty of green spaces and gorgeous landscaping.

My daughter really likes the 4-1-4 schedule. You take 4 courses in the Fall semester and get 4 credit hours per course. There is a Winter term in which students take one course after a two-week Winter vacation. (The Winter term is included in the tuition and most students do take a course during the Winter term.) In the Winter term, students often take courses that they might not otherwise take. Then they take 4 courses again in the Srping, with 4 credit hours per course. My daughter prefers to concentrate on 4 courses rather than 5, even though there is a greater amount of class time and outside work in a 4-credit course than a 3.credit course.

The class sizes are very appealing to us. My daughter called me today and excitedly told me how her English class broke up into small groups of four students each and spent time (wherever each group decided to go) discussing a book the class had read. They'll report back to the class when it next meets. She has also participated in discussions in psychology class . . . something that probably would not happen in introductory level classes in a large university.

She says that Elon is small enough that she constantly runs into people that she has met as she moves about campus. It is also big enough that there will always be new people to meet.

So far, she's loving it!

Is there a disproportionate number of females at Elon?
