Mostly this is just to re-stir up some conversation, but has anyone else looked into the Rice/Houston Hillel and/or Jewish community at all?

hey all,

Im a conservative Jew looking into Rice, and I have the same dilemma. I've never lived in an area that was not predominantly Jewish before; will this be an extreme culture shock for me and is there any Jewish presence at all? More importantly, I know that Houston is more cosmopolitan than other parts of Texas, but is there any bigotry that I should worry about? Thanks.

There are a lot more Jewish kids than you think. I believe the population at Rice is about 10% Jewish, but don't quote me on that.My son is a freshman, and both he and his roommate are Jewish. The first 3 of the 12 other freshmen/women that he met that are going to Rice from our area are also Jewish. There are 2 Hillel branches, one near Rice and one on the U of H campus. The Hillels serve all the surrounding school students-undergrad, grad, med, law etc so there are lots of participants. I'd suggest you contact the head of the Hillel-- they are very approachable. You'll LOVE Rice-- its been GREAT for my son, and he already has plans for the High Holy Days.

My feeling about hillel is that it's a nice resource to have. I've attended some of their functions. But they are pushy. They call, e-mail, IM, etc. But you can get realy involved very easily I've found.
