3 DAYS LEFT!!!
Decision letters are mailed today !!

By Buffalo (Buffalo) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 12:01 am: Edit

RIGHT ON!!! I am up with you busting my @**. Why? I have no clue. It's not going to change MIT's mind. And, I am already into the Naval Academy. Go Figure!

By Itsallcool (Itsallcool) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:22 am: Edit

Are they sending it in the morning or at night, why do i care? i have no clue...

it seems like our fate will be somewhere in some remote post office or a train or a plane or some USPS car comming home......

sucks

By Midwestguy (Midwestguy) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 09:39 am: Edit

I called this morning, and they are mailing them this afternoon, via First Class Mail. This means we will receive by Monday for the east coast and midwest, and by Tuesday on the west coast.

By Matthias (Matthias) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 09:42 am: Edit

For all we know, right at this moment, some lacky at the MIT admissions office is carrying a boxful of rejection letters and acceptance packages to the post office. In his hands are the futures of a thousand adolescents.

By Stupidfool (Stupidfool) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 10:05 am: Edit

I think that most applicants to MIT know how to count, so threads like this are unnecessary.

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 10:13 am: Edit

Bah! What blasphemy is this?? Away with you, heathen!

By Angrod (Angrod) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 10:36 am: Edit

lol. Hey Matthias, is that you? I am that guy who talked with you for two hours the night that Rice gave out their admissions decisions. Did you apply EA to MIT? I did, and got deffered. :( Anyway, I am in to Rice, so I am not too worried. I figure my chances at MIT are about 1/754 since I already got deffered.

Anyone tried asking for decisions over the phone? maybe they just tell it right away?

By Midwestguy (Midwestguy) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 11:16 am: Edit

No, they won't give decisions over the phone until Thursday 3/18. I already tried today.

By Chardonnay (Chardonnay) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 12:15 pm: Edit

oh god, monday is too soon! i have lost my previous calm! i'll just be a bundle of nerves this weekend, and after monday i'll be a rotting heap of deadened nerves. what a way to spend spring break!

By Seraphim2 (Seraphim2) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 12:43 pm: Edit

Yeah, I've been really stoic about this whole thing up until a few days ago. MIT is my top choice and I hear from them first. It's a mixed blessing, I guess (depending on the decision).

A quick question: The acceptance rate for internationals (from what I've heard) is around 5% or something. I'm assuming from this board that alot of those applying are international students. Does that mean that MIT's acceptance percentage of 17% is brought down by the internationals? Is the domestic acceptance higher? I know it's not relevent at this point, just curious.

Also, what's the status with the envelopes? I've heard a few things. Big? Small? Small then big?

Thanks!

By Over30 (Over30) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 01:05 pm: Edit

Back in December (EA) an applicant put a webcam in his mailbox which he checked during the day at school. Here is a link to the picture of his envelope in his mailbox. (It took me a while to find this). It was in a thread called "Friday Mail Thread" on December 19.

By Angrod (Angrod) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 01:38 pm: Edit

lol, yeah that was hilarious.

By Midwestguy (Midwestguy) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 01:43 pm: Edit

That is such an MIT thing to do. I'm happy to know what the envelope looks like.

By Memtigers86 (Memtigers86) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 02:11 pm: Edit

Has anyone noticed that the number of exclamation points corresponds with the number of days left? hehe... cute (:

By Ivyecon (Ivyecon) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 02:47 pm: Edit

I also called since it is Spring Break and I can't take the waiting! Bu they told me that you have to wait until the 18th to the decisions over the phone.

By Openthought (Openthought) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 03:12 pm: Edit

I wish that the number of exclamation points was inversely proportional to the number of days left. That way things would build as the date approaches, instead of having only one measley exclamation point for Sunday. Even though it would've been a lot more nerve racking to have more. Trouble is we would have had to be consistent with the date that the count began.
Why am I complaining? Talk to you guys on Monday. Godspeed

Shouldn't the number of exclamation points somehow be inversely related to the number of days left? After all, anxiety increases the closer it gets...

If you can log on to see the accepted students parties, that means that we got accepted?

what? 1664? site? anyways,Congrats!

By Isaac (Isaac) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 05:54 pm: Edit

oops Longhorn didnt mean i got accepted, I meant that 1664 students were accepted in the Class of 2008 site: http://web.mit.edu/admissions/inside/yourclass/index.html
Sorry for the confusion..

By Canadian_Idol (Canadian_Idol) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 05:58 pm: Edit

can u log on to the page though?

By Vsage3 (Vsage3) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:01 pm: Edit

Yep I can't log onto the site with the parties and such. I guess my journey ends here then: I got rejected. Good luck to everyone else and thanks Isaac for not leaving me in suspense until monday.

By Kenny (Kenny) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:04 pm: Edit

I think that "log into" isn't jet opened for accepted students, .. they r not so styp.

By Chardonnay (Chardonnay) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:07 pm: Edit

aww man, everything is so so so final! a few hours ago i knew that decisions were being mailed today, but i didn't truly appreciate the scaryness of that until i saw that website isaac linked. i don't even wanna try to fail to log into the accepted site, i'd rather wait for my little envelope.

By Isaac (Isaac) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:07 pm: Edit

Hey Vsage3, I cant log onto the site too...so i guess Im like you.
Good luck to the rest of you and best of luck in the future

By Vsage3 (Vsage3) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:13 pm: Edit

BTW just to let you know, a person admitted EA was able to get in.

By Kenny (Kenny) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:14 pm: Edit

So.. we are waiting for someone who can log on...
Until then....

Everything is possible...

By Stupidfool (Stupidfool) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:14 pm: Edit

I'm in agreement with Kenny. They probably haven't activated the accepted students' logins yet because they don't want people using the site to see if they got in.

By Kenny (Kenny) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:15 pm: Edit

EA .. is .. EA, RD .. is .. RD :)

By Stupidfool (Stupidfool) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:16 pm: Edit

Yeah, people who get in EA already know they're in so they wouldn't use the site to see if they got in.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Probably, but wouldn't MIT at least take the time to disable the financial aid tracking system accounts for the denied students if they so blatantly put up an "admitted students" login site?

By Icansmile4u (Icansmile4u) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 06:51 pm: Edit

i am not sure if that site should work for internationals now. It's obviously about party locations and its details. International locations aren't even on the list. So I suspect it?

Anyways, I mean MIT, don't they know about students who are ''curious'' and do things for the ''love of learning'' (learning about that site for example?)
But I still won't really give up until i get that little white envelope arrives on monday..

yep but no places such as eastern asia , europe, and etc. that page would be meaningless for people from those regions I think. so I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Sigh I am inclined to believe glockenspeil, although I believe if I was able to login I would have been a little more ecstatic. Whatever.

I can't login either. I expect at least a few of us would be able to login.

Still hoping... but this probably means it will work very soon (possibly tomorrow).

By Coureur (Coureur) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:11 pm: Edit

Relax guys. According to the MIT website, applicants living outside the US won't be able to log on to find out their decisions until March 18th.

See:

By Glockenspeil (Glockenspeil) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:13 pm: Edit

By Blah1111 (Blah1111) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:15 pm: Edit

What I'm unsure of is why MIT would say that admission decisions will not be available online, yet they have this site that does exactly that (in effect). Like someone else posted on this board, I hope MIT realizes what they're doing and how it contradicts what they were saying (if regular decisions are up already).

webhappy, you got into caltech ea, right? well, i guess if a caltech acceptee can't log in yet, there's hope yet ... where's my id and pswd? it's cool how the ucla and mit threads are getting new posts every few seconds, since decisions are close.

By Icansmile4u (Icansmile4u) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:26 pm: Edit

Obviously, if that is true, they won't kick you out and disable your account once after they let you log-in. Waitlisted people won't be able to log in either. so we can't be too sure that not being able to enter the side means rejection. let's see.

By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:28 pm: Edit

But you're international!
Do you know any other Rickoids who are US citizens and applied RD to MIT? Then we know for sure that Glockenspeil has been lying...

By Glockenspeil (Glockenspeil) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:29 pm: Edit

Well, obviously memememe didn't get rejected so now I don't know whats going on. I used all lowercase letters.

By Indiana_Jones (Indiana_Jones) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:29 pm: Edit

Me*4, that proves that not being able to login doesn't mean rejection. Some people may actually be able to login, if for some reason its only partially implemented.

By Vsage3 (Vsage3) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:30 pm: Edit

Ok Here's what I think happened. NOT ALL OF THE ACCEPTEES CAN LOGIN YET. I would try back early monday because MIT probably hasn't updated the list completely. I mean there are hundreds of names to add, and I'm assuming they did it mantually. You renew hope in me, Me^4 since I highly doubt you got rejected.

By Chardonnay (Chardonnay) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:30 pm: Edit

I am not lying. This is what it says:

MIT Class of 2008
Admitted Student Parties
In late March and early April a number of Educational Council groups around the country will host gatherings to provide you and your parents an opportunity to learn more about MIT. This will be a chance for you to meet other admitted students from your area as well as a number of ECs. In some cases, the gatherings will also be combined with a meeting of local alumni and parents of current students. For gatherings that take place March 21 through March 28, current students who are home for spring break may also be on hand to share their perspective.

We encourage you and your parents to attend. Click on the links below for times and locations of the meetings. We will be updating this page routinely with new locations and information as it becomes available.

interesting, i just logged in ... however, since i was able to do so, that login=admit thing is still gonna be untrue probably. oh, i'm not saying anything about glockenspiel and midwest, though, i've read glockenspiel's stats and they are way better than mine.

By Memememe (Memememe) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:43 pm: Edit

Darn. She is pretty much in at MIT and could really put to rest any questions if she couldn't log in. After all, she is to have a breakfast tomorrow with an admissions officer. Anyways, if I hear any more, I'll drop here again.

By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:44 pm: Edit

Yeah, I want to see screencaps too. But I think it's most likely that they're entering data by hand. They would be making decisions on paper still, so someone would need to input the data.

By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:46 pm: Edit

WTF? Where'd the form go???? I don't see it anymore!!

By Blah1111 (Blah1111) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:47 pm: Edit

They removed the login page.

By Gottagetout (Gottagetout) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:47 pm: Edit

And the manual data entry idea is ludicrous.

This is MIT. They are using a web app. It has a database backend. Their admissions stuff is also computerized. They have the world's priemier CS department. I think they could do a simple data merge...

By Midwestguy (Midwestguy) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:51 pm: Edit

Okay, I can log-in. I'm RD, my id number starts with "973-", and my last name starts with "S". Once I log in, all party street addresses and more info is shown. Ask me any questions you wish about this.

By Buffalo (Buffalo) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:52 pm: Edit

By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:54 pm: Edit

NOOO!

Someone look in their cache for the HTML. I doubt they disabled the back-end app. So someone post the HTML for the form.

do NOT revisit the site PLEASE!

By Indiana_Jones (Indiana_Jones) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:57 pm: Edit

they did disable it.

By Gottagetout (Gottagetout) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:58 pm: Edit

They just commented out the text and mark-up that displayed that. I have a feeling it really might indicate something (otherwise why comment it out? maybe to stop people from getting the wrong impression? or maybe because it was right?)

Chardonnay, did you try to login before and it didn't let you in? "yay! memememe can't log in, and neither can i! *breathes sigh of relief*" Does that just mean you didn't have your password?

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:58 pm: Edit

Do you think what they said about cancelling all the FA accounts except for acceptees' is true? Check! Check check check!!

An interesting side note:

Goto http://web.mit.edu/admissions/inside/features/index.html
and look at the image. A pile of "ADMITS" and a pile of "OTHERS" and a Mac in the background.

Coincidence?

Also, the form action on the admitted students' parties page is called "status". *raises one eyebrow*

By Brianso (Brianso) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 03:31 pm: Edit

ya i noticed the status thing. hopefully getting the "wrong info" screen at 6 est yesterday doesn't mean 100% rejection.

By Vsage3 (Vsage3) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 03:34 pm: Edit

Nice sleuthing. Sort of makes me a little woozy though, and that's an appropriate action name for the admitted students' parties page :p

By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 03:40 pm: Edit

Is it only me or the autumn status page down?

By Vsage3 (Vsage3) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 03:42 pm: Edit

fatrack isn't down but some other pages on autumn are.

By Chardonnay (Chardonnay) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 03:42 pm: Edit

it's down, i tried too.

By Chardonnay (Chardonnay) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 03:44 pm: Edit

funny how there was an "other" pile. should have been "rejects" or "losers" or "haha no ways", since i'm sure that's what they really mean. oh, and an "almost" pile for the waitlisted. that pic was scary, anyone else think so?

By Gottagetout (Gottagetout) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 03:48 pm: Edit

It is accessible to me at 15:49 EST. Remember to use https otherwise it refuses the connection. https://autumn.mit.edu/inside/ is not found on the server anymore though. Odd. For more info on the road to autumn, see the partial traceroute below.

gottagetout, where are you from?

By Gottagetout (Gottagetout) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 03:52 pm: Edit

Yeah, the pic made me soil myself, that's why I posted it.

It occurred to me, about the party status login bit:
not all of us were rejected. And we have yet see proof that any of the previous claims are credible.

There's still hope.

By Gottagetout (Gottagetout) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 03:56 pm: Edit

Tbone, in meatspace I currently reside somewhere in the central United States (as is evinced from the traceroute). More specific information will be released as we come upon it.

Stay tuned.

By Vsage3 (Vsage3) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 04:02 pm: Edit

hey GGO what are the first three lines? O=)

By Gottagetout (Gottagetout) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 04:04 pm: Edit

Haha. I may get rejected from MIT, but I'm not stupid.

By Fftd (Fftd) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 04:05 pm: Edit

I clicked on the link
http://web.mit.edu/admissions/inside/yourclass/index.html, it automatically went to a page with "Your Class 2008" without asking for Login. From that page, I could go to "why MIT", "experience MIT", "financial aid", "parents", "next steps", etc. Can these pages be accessed by the public or just for admitted students since it does not ask for MIT ID# or Name?

By Amilee04 (Amilee04) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 05:26 pm: Edit

What's the big deal about the Admit/Other/Mac in the back pic?

By Emperoriv (Emperoriv) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 05:35 pm: Edit

how long do u reckon it will take to get to Canada?

By Isaac (Isaac) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 05:40 pm: Edit

Quebec and Ontario are near Massachusetts, so I guess it should be here by Monday for the eastern provinces of Canada.

Not that im hopeful, since I couldn't log on yesterday...
And guys what do you mean that autumn site is down, it was working for me.

By Isaac (Isaac) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 05:42 pm: Edit

btw ur right, autumn aint working but the status page is.

By Emperoriv (Emperoriv) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 05:42 pm: Edit

the log-in page yestoday didnt work for me either. I guess i am already rejected.

That login page has been taken off apparently, I get a 404 error.

By Amilee04 (Amilee04) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 05:55 pm: Edit

Just forget this whole log-in business. There is so much speculation, and people are getting really worked up over it when no one is sure what its significance is. For a while I was happy that I could log in, but then I remembered that it is still very possible that I'll get a rejection letter over the next week. There's no point in taking it as an indication of anything.
