I have been accepted by both the Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Which one do you think is better in electrical engineering?
Any comments to me?

No question: Georgia tech- a much better school overall and not just engineering- also great location

Georgia tech is 85% male. I don't care how good it is that just sucks.

Are you guys sure? I thought michigan was ranked in the top 5 for both engineering and electrical engineering, and above gatech? umich is also in the usnews top 25 for overall, while gatech isnt right?

Can anyone who knows the latest usnews rankings please comment?

I've been accepted by both GA tech and umich for electrical engineering too, but till now, I thought that umich was the better college.

EE/Communications rankings from US NEws

1. Massachusetts Inst. of Technology
2. Stanford University (CA)
3. University of California–Berkeley *
4. U. of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign *
5. University of Michigan–Ann Arbor *
6. California Institute of Technology
7. Georgia Institute of Technology *
8. Purdue Univ.–West Lafayette (IN)*
9. Cornell University (NY)
10. Carnegie Mellon University (PA)
11. University of Texas–Austin *
12. Princeton University (NJ)
13. Univ. of California–Los Angeles *
14. University of Washington *
15. Rice University (TX)
Virginia Tech *
17. Rensselaer Polytechnic Inst. (NY)
Texas A&M Univ.–College Station *
Univ. of California–San Diego *
20. Northwestern University (IL)
21. Johns Hopkins University (MD)
North Carolina State U.–Raleigh *
Univ. of Wisconsin–Madison *
24. Pennsylvania State U.–University Park *
University of Florida *
*********************************************

By the way, I don't think these rankings are that useful to separate those two schools, or any others, really. There is too much else that gets factored in here by the voters. I think I would prefer Michigan because of the broader opportunities in fields other than engineering in case you decided to make a switch or pursue some other electives. However, you also have weather, geographic preferences and other things to take into account.

Gtech is ranked a notch higher overall in engineering, but I'm not sure why....I am sure that it doesnt matter. No recruiter or grad school looks at those ranking lists. Only kids and parents trying to decide what to do. Be happy you have the choice, and don't make it based on what someone else thinks you should do

I don't want to sound like an advertisement for gatech, the most intelligent person i know is going to umich next year (you'll know who this person is when they get there, trust me), but gatech just has more opportunities. It's in the middle of a tech hub (Atlanta) and is pretty much known for doing heavy duty research all the time. They get a ton of money too, like their recent 60 or 80 million dollar grant from the government to make it a hub for nanotech reserach. Drawbacks to their engineering program would probably be the austere nature of their grading: the gatech thread has been flamed for grading harshly and not on very nice curves (even MIT grades on a B curve). Also, I have gotten the impression that many of the professors stay only for the research and care little for their classes, but how is this really different from other campuses? In conclusion, I forgot what I was saying :). Ah, last thing, I got accepted to gatech and will probably wind up there unless MIT accepts me, so I guess I could be considered biased

I would go to Michigan over Georgia Tech.

By Goblue2008 (Goblue2008) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 11:00 pm: Edit

Me too... of course, that's just my unbiased opinion. ^^

Quality of life and dorms is also something to be considered. I got into Michigan and didn't apply to Georgia Tech, but I hear Tech's dorms are like prisons...it's a very brutal school but the survivors are among the best at what they do.

By Rohit_Sn (Rohit_Sn) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 03:34 am: Edit

hey mattman when did you apply. i've applied to the sames school except for rit. my sat scores are 1280 and 1340. applied jan 31 2004. Strikingly similar. planning to major in eecs. Going to michigan?

By Vsage3 (Vsage3) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 06:20 am: Edit

Ill give you that, mattman. The dorms are awful at gatech: they are incredibly musty and dinky with tiny lights. Who says you have to spend much time in there, though.

By Anand123 (Anand123) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 07:53 am: Edit

Hey Genius Jacky..

I too got into both for electrical engineering ..

If u got the dough .. go to Michigan..
if u dont ..GA tech is a safer bet.. and like sum1 else mentioned.. theres a lotta opportunities available at GA tech..

oh..btw.. ive herd that GA tech dorms are like dungeons (according to the princeton review site)

By Goblue2008 (Goblue2008) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 10:50 am: Edit

Atlanta is a big city with lots of opportunity... but it also an extremely dangerous place.

By Mattman (Mattman) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 08:00 pm: Edit

Rohit Sn, I applied to Michigan at end of November and got my decision late January (about six weeks).
