i'm going to michigan b/c it's one of the best all around universities in the nation. it has a bunch of top ranked programs. i'm espeically interested in their research program (#1)& business (behind upenn & mit) michigan is a very prestigious university and if you can do well, when you graduate you'll get good job opportunites nationwide. also it's the ideal college town there's always stuff going on, it's beautiful, and there's a diverse student population. there's also like, what, over 1000 student organizations? at the same time, michigan's campus isn't overwhelmingly huge. i love sports, and michigan is crazy about their sports teams and intramurals as well. another thing is that i have ONLY heard positive feedback from students who go there, the students seem to be genuinely happy to be at michigan, and i think that's awesome. a lot of times, students complain a lot about their school, but i haven't heard that from michigan. basically, i'm going there b/c is is such a great all around university & i want to live in the "ideal" colleg town. whatever your interests may be, it seems like michigan has it.

i'm out of state, i applied the first week of october and got admitted into ls&a as pre-business in the second week of december. i had a 31 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA with 4 ap's.
e.c's:
* 4 years varisty basketball (2 time co/captain, all conference, 2nd team all state)
* 3 years varsity tennis (captain, 2 time all conference)
* 3 years varisty soccer
* tutored kids in downtown chicago 10th-12th grades
* organized drives for collecting clothes and such for underprivilged children
* key club(treasurer, 10th-12th)
* youth in government (10th-12th)
* volunteered at the hospital 9th-12th

in my recc's, my teachers were able to comment on my activities and put their imput on what i've done, which i'm sure helped. i put a lot of time into my essays and basically told them how much dedication i had in what i did & what i learned from those activities.

thanks chitown.....anyone else? here's what i luv about umich :
1. IT'S HUGE! I WANT BIG SCHOOLS!
2. the diversity here is uncomparable: both ethnically, and even among the varied personalities.
3. the fact that the student body overall gets along, and that from what i've heard, it's not a "clicky" school. The only thing i've heard about "clickiness" is that the school is somewhat segregated by subject because of the subject-by-subject libraries, etc- meaning that like bio majors all hang out together, history majors hang out together, and the alike.
4. ann arbor is a great college town
5. the campus is gorgeorous- and exactly what i dreamed a college campus should look like
6. the academics rock- especially for the price!
7. their science programs are unbelievably good!
8. the mass amounts of student organizations...i'm pathethic....i already know which clubs i would want to go to if i got in.
9. the liberal atmosphere- probally the only liberal place in all of MI
10. for me, its a good distance away from home - about an hr and a 1/2- good enough to not get homesick, but good enough to also give me independence.
the only "bad" things i've heard about the college is:
1. there's no early decision or early action (drat!)
2. i've heard a lot of TA'S teach the classes- but i don't know how true this is? i've heard varying things from diff. people....

Skulkarni...
1. "there's no early decision or early action (drat!)" ~ actually, if you get your application in RIGHT AWAY, it's pretty much equivilant to erly decision. you'll find out sooner & you'll have a better chance of getting accepted.
2. "i've heard a lot of TA'S teach the classes- but i don't know how true this is? i've heard varying things from diff. people.... " ~ TA's don't teach classes. Professors teach classes, however, TA's will conduct the discussion sessions that you go to once or twice a week. the only classes that you may have a ta teaching the actual class, is in calc 1.

Graduate Student Instructors will probably teach your intro english seminar and calc. However, they are very knowledgeable, and with intro classes like that... you dont need a genious to teach you grammer and beginning calculus. I had a Phd candidate for my GSI for an english seminar of 16 people, she knows what she is doing.
For other classes, GSIs will run discussion sections, and you will have a professor for lecture. And the professor will always be available...i mean, i think it is a rule that they have to hold office hours.

Amazing pharmacy school. Great being it is up north (even though it does get cold). Just an amazing university with a diverse student body overall.
But I will forever hate their money-hogging standards

what are the class sizes for "regular" calc 1 classes? i heard they are about 25 students. is that true?
