Could you guys please tell me how important AMC is. and what score most MIT students have?
Thanks.
By Poutingminotaur (Poutingminotaur) on Thursday, February 19, 2004 - 08:32 pm: Edit
um... i never took the AMC, or the AIME or what not. though i do know quite a few people who took it. so i would say its a nice thing to have on your app, but its definitely not essential to have.
By Dumplings (Dumplings) on Thursday, February 19, 2004 - 09:15 pm: Edit
i agree with Poutingminotaur. I took the AMC twice, but couldn't remember my scores so I left that section of the application blank and put in only AP scores. I got in early. Its definitely not vital that you have AMC or AIME...if you score high on them, though, they might give your application a boost.

i think they count it as part of the academic standings...
i faxed them my new score of 133.5. hope they take it into consideration....

...What's AMC?
By Mrowry (Mrowry) on Thursday, February 19, 2004 - 10:01 pm: Edit
Yeah, I got in early, and unlike Dumplings who had a respectable reason for omitting them, I remembered them but was just too embarrassed to put them there. (To give you an idea, I didn't make AIME until junior year, and I didn't make it this year.) So you don't have to be good in math to get into MIT. :-P

Thanks for the comments.
How about AP grades? Are they important? Or are they used only for placement?
Thanks.
By Mrowry (Mrowry) on Friday, February 20, 2004 - 04:08 pm: Edit
I think MIT looks pretty favorably on you if you list your (high) scores in that section, but considering that they don't want score reports until after you're admitted, it can't weigh that much more than AMC/AIME scores.

did you send AMC scores to them?
By Nobody (Nobody) on Friday, February 20, 2004 - 09:27 pm: Edit
no i didn't, but i am considering.
Thanks for the comments!

how do you send the scores?
all i did was listed my score on my app...

I didn't put down my AMC scores either, and I got in early. An admissions officer said that they should be reported if the scores are triple digits. So...mine were neither in the triple digits nor could I remember them. =)
By Mrowry (Mrowry) on Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 12:25 am: Edit
Triple digits? What if you get a 12.5? ;-)
By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 01:20 am: Edit
12.5? Should've played some more Pheonix instead of bubbling that answer sheet... :P
By Synikaux (Synikaux) on Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 03:15 pm: Edit
i got a 129
By Emperoriv (Emperoriv) on Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 04:01 pm: Edit
good job!
do u know ur rank yet? i got 133.5 but no clue what my rank is yet...
By Myoryu (Myoryu) on Monday, February 23, 2004 - 07:59 pm: Edit
I got lower than 120 but improved a bit comparing to last year. Do you think notifying MIT about this new score will just make me look stupid?

How do you report AMC/AIME scores?
By Mrowry (Mrowry) on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 - 01:38 am: Edit
There's no formal AMC/AIME score report system... you just write them down on your app.
By Nobody (Nobody) on Thursday, February 26, 2004 - 09:34 pm: Edit
What scores do most of the new freshmen have? Thanks.
By Texas137 (Texas137) on Friday, February 27, 2004 - 06:51 am: Edit
there's no formal reporting system like SAT, but there is a book of results that MIT probably has. So they can confirm it if you claim a high score. If you said you had a 15 on the AIME, but you had lackluster math grades and SAT scores, they would almost certainly check that out in the book.

I got a 91 on the AMC --is this good to report?
By Willothewisp (Willothewisp) on Saturday, February 28, 2004 - 08:59 pm: Edit
Uh, I don't know, but my guess is don't bother if you didn't make AIME.
And so as to not start a new thread, because it's not worth it, who here was at SMT today? Webhappy?
By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Saturday, February 28, 2004 - 09:50 pm: Edit
I haven't been there in two years. Sorry.

And I got cremed.

Yeah!!
Paul got creamed!!!
But I touched him so I'm happy

No, I should be happy because I touched him.

ok...i think you two should get a room.
By Willothewisp (Willothewisp) on Saturday, February 28, 2004 - 11:32 pm: Edit
I got creamed too. I got 2nd in geom last year, so I was overconfident and made a bunch of stupid mistakes. And as for advanced topics...well, I just suck. We were very good as a team, bad individually. Now I think you know which school I go to. Or wait, you can look up my name too, on the website... oh well.
By Itempest (Itempest) on Saturday, February 28, 2004 - 11:41 pm: Edit
I did well last year and I'm sure it looks good on my MIT application. I was hoping I would do better this year but it turns out not. Answered only 15 (best case turnout: 115) but I know a couple of them are wrong.
Oh well.

Hey, I know you, Willothewisp. Weren't you in ARML?
By Willothewisp (Willothewisp) on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 12:26 am: Edit
Yes, I was and am going to be. I know you from ARML only by name though. I'm of the anti-social clique-forming type.
By Genralyoda (Genralyoda) on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 09:06 pm: Edit
oh god, the AMC this year was HORRIBLE
i got 144 soph year, 138 jr year, then this year i took the A and got 134.5 and took the B and got 120 -_- I think that having a good AMC score is a major plus, because it shows that you are VERY proficient in mathematics. That's just my take on the AMC. However I know a 3 time USAMO qualifier who got deferred EA at MIT, so don't worry too much if you don't know what the AMC is ^.^
By Memememe (Memememe) on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 10:24 pm: Edit
I'd say if you're not MOP level, USAMO is only a plus, not a hook.
