What do you think guys. Both schools are excellent state schools and highly rated in us newsweek for their eng program. But personally which is better?

UMich for sure. It is the 2nd best public school in the country and has some of the best graduate schools period.

1) Ann Arbor > Urbana

2) Better all around school, not just a lopsided Engineering program.

3) Better Football Team

4) More Pretigious

i hav bin admitted 2 umich and uiuc for comp engr. i will be in-state for uiuc..umich might be better but is it worth the diff in costs(around $20,000 per yr)?? my EFC is $0...do u think michigan will meet my need(which is BIG)??

i hav also applied 2 UT Austin. it is ranked lower but has a respectable program...a little easier i think. keeping in mind that i wanna do a MBA after engr wud u recomend that u go there instead as it will be easier to maintain a relatively higher GPA?

could you post your stats zane

By Becks777 (Becks777) on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 10:28 pm: Edit

No- if you live in illinois go with U of I- unless most of your aid from michigan is in grants

By Zane (Zane) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 02:10 am: Edit

SAT: 1260 (math 650, verbal 610)
High School: 85% or more from grade 8 onward (i study in India....will be resident of IL as my mom is moving there)
Class Rank: 10% (top 3 students)
TOEFL: 287
Extra-Curriculars: loads...i think my extra-curriculars and strong essay, short answers are what helped me get in!! the sat score is hopeless.

rohit-i saw ur stats somewhere..which skls do u hav admission 2??

Anand, where did you get those figures from? I thought that illinois was around 27.5k for enginnering (excluding personal and misc) and michigan was 35k. Thats what the university websites say:

http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/current/tuit.html
http://www.finaid.umich.edu/Financial_Aid_Basics/cost.asp

I'm an international student too, and want to do electrical engineering. I've just been accepted by both umich and uiuc. I dont really know how the 2 rank up against each other. According to my friends, uiuc is slightly better for electrical engineering alone, umich is slightly better in engineering, and umich is much better overall.

Right now, I'm leaning towards umich, but the question I'm asking myself is whether umich is worth the extra $6000 a year.

Anyone have any advice or comments?

By Whacks (Whacks) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 09:44 pm: Edit

oops, sorry. I just found the following page which gives the uiuc cost for international students.

http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/current/tuitint.html

I cant find the cost for attending umich as an international student though. Is it the same as for a out-of-state student? That would mean that umich only costs about $2000 more per year.

P.S. Why does it cost more money to attend uiuc as an international student than as an out-of-state student? The tuition and fees is the same.

Whacks..
im talking about the overall cost in U mich

tuition+ living cost..
its there in my I -20
tuition:$30845
Living expenses:$12628

check it when u get ure acceptance package!

By Becks777 (Becks777) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 11:57 am: Edit

Whacks i think the "living allowance" for some reason for internationals are doubled. Its normally in the 6000s but on that page it says 12000.
